Sweet Dreams 1,893 December 23, 2013 Share December 23, 2013 Them being colourful is more visually appealing. Also, more toy sales. They should have coloured them flesh-colour is EQG though.
ReverseFaller 2,484 December 23, 2013 Share December 23, 2013 The problem with having them be flesh colored, is what color do you make everbody? Some people may get offended that so-and-so isn't white/black/whatever, or that the entire mane 6 is white. It's better just to do what Doug did. Make everybody different colors. It worked good, and it gave the world some life. 1 Credit for the signature goes to Kyoshi

Dsanders 5,748 December 23, 2013 Share December 23, 2013 I don't necessarily think it has to do much with race or ethnicity. The reason for the humans being multicolored was probably because it would allow the younger audience to better recognize the humanized counterparts of the ponies. That explanation may still not make much sense but you gotta understand, the movie was intently directed to 8 year old girls! I mean would such a young audience really be concerned with stuff like racism or ethnicity? ^Possibly... but more so unlikely. But I still think that the aforementioned explanation makes a lot more sense.
Pinkazoid 3,493 December 23, 2013 Share December 23, 2013 The oP was talking about EQG, not MLP in general. Then what the hell are they? I'm pretty sure the intention was for them to be humans. Last time I checked there's no purple or blue humans, I know that's the point of the thread, but maybe they were intended to be some sort of anthro.... because I don't remember humans having ears or wings either :

During the rest of the film they were fully human, aside form the colors.

See, they can't be fully human then, that's like calling a human a monkey that wears clothes, it just makes a lot more sense that they're anthro rather than odd colored humans, when they weren't referred to as that through out the film. 1 :

If they want them to be anthro then put something in other than different colors. At the end of the day, we get something that's too weird to be human yet not animalistic enough to be anthro. Dr. Mechano 630 December 23, 2013 Share December 23, 2013 I think it was a smart move. To definitively state "This character is [x] race and this character is [x] race" would have had far-reaching effects on the fun fanon that artists have when designer humanizations. By leaving their skin tones the same as their pony counterparts, no real-world skin colors are implied in the movie, which leaves us free to interpret each pony as whatever race we want while humanizing them. As I recall, the creators of Doug offered similar reasoning for its technicolor population; that it doesn't matter what color you are anyway, so they simply forwent realistic skin tones altogether. Wingnut 7,003 December 23, 2013 Share December 23, 2013 The desire to avoid any potential missteps or offense has been given as the most likely reason. It also makes the characters more recognizable. But there's an even simpler explanation for the Equestria Girls to not have normal human complexions. As ponies, they don't have regular equine fur colors either.

Sir Wulfington 276 December 23, 2013 Share December 23, 2013 (edited) Probably because they were too afraid of people getting butthurt over what races they'd have been, which is a really really stupid reason. For some reason, tho, they made big mac caucasian, as far as I'm aware he's the only one with a human skin color. I find that interesting..... I believe that Hasbro wanted to avoid racism. Except theirs nothing racist about them having human skin colors as humans. MissDashie 275 December 23, 2013 Share December 23, 2013 Personally, I think that they didn't want to have to deal with the "OMG ____ IS BLACK!" and "OMG ____ IS ASIAN HOW RACIST!!!" Why do you think they didn't color them flesh-colored? Both the show and the movie are, first and foremost, to provide a colorful, flashy commercial plug for Hasbro's toys. Colorful ponies/people of all different colors are much more appealing than different shades of white, brown, tan, and black. Its just an artistic choice to make the show more palatable to little girls, because it makes the animation more vivid. 2 Signature by a jewel of rarity Princeton University Class of 2018! DubWolf 17,354 December 24, 2013 Share December 24, 2013 Most likely to make it obvious which characters are which without having to focus directly on their hair color and style, though it wouldn't have been that difficult. I didn't really mind while watching it. Still a little awkward seeing green and purple humans o.o. Making them colorful makes them more appealing to young girls. I don't know how true this statement is, but it seems as though little girls gravitate towards colorful worlds. Also, Monster High dolls are colored bizarrely. Perhaps Hasbro is mimicking what Mattel is doing, since those Monster High dolls are selling well. Zygen 6,066 December 24, 2013 Share December 24, 2013 I guess for many reasons, partly so the ponies are put into any kind of racial category. Partly because they just wanted to have it that way stylistically, and partly maybe because they wanted it to be easier to tell whos who i guess. You kinda get use to it anyways. But i'm sure they did it for atleast one of these reasons, or maybe more. Maybe an entirely different one. I heard it was about the races, but idk for sure really. Krampus 197 December 24, 2013 Share December 24, 2013 Simple: It's an indicator to the audience to tell which human is what pony. Take some of the background ponies, for example. Had they done something differently, the audience might have had trouble seeing the not-so-subtle nods to the Equestrians. And while I'm sure race had something to do with it, that's my theory on the situation. I'm bad because I listen to music with swears.
