Am I the only one who notices this?

Whenever there's a fan film/series/animation, most people requesting to join want to be voice actors. I don't think I've ever seen someone requesting to be an animator.

^ Exactly. Talking doesn't require skill (although acting requires practice). Animating requires dedication to excel at the craft.

Us writers, on the other hand, are never short a job.  B)

Hmm... how to word this without sounding like I'm placing a superiority on animators...

Basically, animation is a tedious task and not many people are knowledgeable about proper technique or they are not happy with their abilities. They simply don't trust themselves with animating without the proper know-how.

That being said, anybody can try a hand at it, but not many people do. Now, one thing that a lot of people try out are impressions. No software required, not too time consuming, makes your friends giggle, etc. They may not be full-out voice actor material, but maybe they can pull off a pretty good Applejack or something. Just by chance they happen to be good at a few voices.

It just seems that it would be a tad more appealing and easier to pick up impersonations than animation, especially since if one voice doesn't work then you can keep trying other characters until you find one that works best.

Not really, you need to have practice in order to be a good voice actor/actress.

While you're right about it being difficult to master voice acting, I think most people think that so long as they have a mic they can be a voice actor. But you won't find people with just a basic understanding of flash thinking they can animate (or at least animate well enough for it to look professionally done). But that could just be my opinion

An interesting trend: The easier it is to make something, the higher percentage of it will be crap :/

I set something up a month ago (production's actually going well) and I got floods of voice actors, to the point I'm out of characters. It was just over this past weekend that I found an animator, and now he's having technical problems and might bail out.

No, you're not the only one.

Voice acting is much easier than animating tbh. With voice acting, all you need is a microphone, so virtually anyone can give it a shot, including people with stage fright and that makes it all the more appealing. Animating recquires a specific set of skills on the other hand, which is why you wouldn't get as many requests. It's got something to do with people's idea that an actor has better chances of recognition (which is sadly true), but it's also because it's a lot easier for anyone to try to act (tho most will fail......HARD) by comparison.

It makes sense; almost anyone can voice a character, but it takes much dedication and skill to animate.

WOW!

You couldn't be more completely wrong and more insultingly dismissive of an entire profession's worth of talent if you were paid for it.

But sadly, standards on fan projects are often poor enough that yeah, anyone can voice a character. They generally won't do it well, but well enough for the low bar set by such things. Plus either way, it's generally the faster of the two work options.

Yeah voice acting is less work and it's way easier to learn. You can either do it or you can't.

Animation is very difficult compared to the voice acting these people want to do, it takes years of practice and skill. I can see why, it makes sense that less people would want to animate.

As many others have said, despite voice acting requiring a bit of practice, animating is really, really hard. It requires a lot of patience and skill. Pretty much anyone with a somewhat interesting voice could voice act, if they practiced in exaggerating their voices a bit.

Could be.

Just know that voice acting is much less task requiring than having to do the animation yourself, having others would help, but then comes the effort and time to work together, when the main animator has the ideas to himself.

I guess it's just to keep people at what they are good at.

I think you misunderstood him. He said that anyone can try to do voice acting, since, aside from skill, all it requires is a decent microphone.

He didn't use the word "try". And in that case, anyone can TRY to animate since aside from skill, all it requires is a pencil and a lot of paper (or software, depending on preference). :P
