When they arrived at the gym, Tuathal had to admit he was surprised by how simple it seemed. Most gyms he'd seen outside of Kanto were incredibly elaborate. When Cassie suggested he pick one of the rooms, he thought for a moment and nodded. "Alright. I guess I'll take defense, then."

He was about to enter when he turned around. "Oh, and Cassie? Good luck."

"Oh, thanks," Cascade said, nervously, stepping into the Defense Room.

Tuall stepped into the Offense Room and found it similarly unadorned, with one Ace Trainer standing there, with two doors behind him, just like the first room. "Welcome to the Offense Room," the trainer said. "Know that you have to battle three trainers before you can reach Norman. Each Gym Trainer has one pokemon each, and you may not leave the gym challenge until it is completed, or until you've reached Norman, without having to start the process over. Knowing this, if you are ready to battle, send out your first pokemon, and this battle can begin."

Next door, Cass had been given a similar lecture by the Defensive Trainer, and Cass' Meowstic was already battling a Munchlax. The walls were thin enough for the sounds of the battle to leak through, so Tuall could hear.

Litwick's Confuse Ray missed, due to Swalot busting out a timely smokescreen, and by the time it had dissapated, it and its trainer were already almost in Slateport. Crawdaunt seemed surprised at getting hit by Water Pulses from each Frogadier, but was slowly blasting each fake Frogadier away with a Dark Pulse. Mightyena launched at the little biding T-Rex Pokemon and, with a Low Sweep, knocked it off its feet.

Things weren't looking good, until the two trainers heard footsteps behind them. A young man with chartreuse hair and a white, button-down shirt was sprinting at them. "Go," he said to Stella and Miles, his voice fiercely calm. "I'll take care of these two. Get the other one." Seconds later, Crawdaunt and Mightyena were occupied by the mystery trainer's Altaria and Magneton, leaving the bridge wide open, allowing for Miles and Stella to chase the other Aqua Grunt and his Swalot, who were almost at Slateport.

Route 102 looked fairly healthy, especially when compared to 103. Seedot still hung from the trees here, and a Surskit was playing with a few Lotad in the lake, and the grass rustled in a few places, one near a pond, one near a berry tree.

The kangaskhan gave a grunt of acknowledgement before assuming a fighting stance and preparing for whatever pokemon the trainer had in store.

Through the wall Tuathal could hear Cass' battle, but he couldn't really tell how it was going. She'd probably be fine, though.

Well, what am I supposed to do? Stella thought to herself. Mantyke couldn't battle, and both Cottonee and Litwick were exhausted, plus cut off from her, still being chased to Slateport. Even so, she continued to chase after the trainer and her two pokemon. "Neither of you attack, ok?" She called after the two. Not that they seemed like they were in an attacking mood. Plus, fleeing was more Cottonee's specialty.

Lurele nodded quietly at what Locke was saying, though she seemed more focused on trying to figure out what was in the rustling grass at the moment.  Hmmm...  "Hey, we're supposed to have at least three pokemon, right?"  Lurele grins slightly before pointing at the rustling grass near the berry tree.  She had no idea what was hidden in the grass, but spur of the moment decisions like this normally worked out pretty well for her.  "Well, I'm gonna go for...  Whatever's over there!  You should try and catch something too - first one to catch a new pokemon wins, alright?"  She glances back at Locke and winks at the boy, then quickly gestures back towards the rustling grass.

"MiMi, you're up!  We don't know what we're going up against, but flush it out and use Fake Out!  That should at least buy us enough time to figure out what's in the grass!"  The Mienshao made a quiet, nearly purring sound, before jumping into the air and descending upon the rustling grass close to the berry tree.

Locke sighed and rolled his eyes, but this didn't stop him from grinning and looking towards another patch of rustling grass. "Alright Rev, Dark Pulse!" The Gengar that had been floating idly nest to Lock charged up a dark ball slowly, before firing it at the patch of grass in pulses of energy. Hopefully it would be enough to draw whatever was in there out.

The Ace Trainer, in response, smirked, and threw his own Pokeball. Out popped a Zangoose. "Zangoose, start it off with Hone Claws!" Zangoose's claws started to glow, and it scraped them together. They seemed to grow, looking even more dangerous than they had before.

From next door, in Cass's room, a strange gurgling could be heard amidst Meowstic's shrieks.

Lurele tries to hide a small frown of disappointment - she wasn't a huge fan of bug types - but quickly shakes it off.  I'm in a new region, I need to round out my team...  I can afford to be picky once we have a full party and can arrange to organize my team from a PC!  She grins and reaches for an empty pokeball, getting ready to throw it the first time she sees an opening.

"Alright MiMi, use Pound!  Then make sure to jump!"  The Mienshao responds quickly, lashing out towards the Wurmple with one of the long tufts of fur hanging off her arms before leaping high into the air.  Regardless of if the attack hit or missed, she knew what was coming, and jumped right over the pokeball that Lurele had tossed when MiMi had launched the attack.

Locke winced at the sight of the small Ralts. There was no way the little thing could stand one on one against Revvy, and suddenly Lurele's words came back to him. "Rev, weaken the Dark Pulse!" The Gengar looked confused for a split second but didn't doubt his trainer's motives. Mere inches away from the Ralts, the pulses dwindled quickly down to a single, thin ring that would hopefully be enough for the small Pokemon to handle.

The Wurmple was no match. It was captured, and easily. For it was a weak Wurmple.

Wurmple's data has been added to the Pokedex.

Wurmple, the Worm Pokémon. Wurmple live primarily off of sap from trees. The suction cups on its feet keep it from slipping.

Wurmple

Found: Route 102          OT: Lurele             Gender: Male

Nature: Modest. Highty Curious.

Ability: Shield Dust. Is protected from statuses due to particles of its own skin surrounding it.

Moveset: Tackle, Poison Sting, String Shot. May be taught Bug Bite with minimal effort.

Close to evolution.

Locke saw the Ralts disappear from sight. He looked around frantically before realizing the thing was running straight at him, away from Revvy. He jumped to the side so Revvy wouldn't accidentally attack him, and took out a pokeball. "Alright use Hypnosis, and follow it up with a weak focus blast!" The Gengar turned in the air and immediately followed his trainer's instructions. The pokemon used teleport, so it was most likely a Psychic type. Hopefully the weak state of the Focus Blast and the resistance of the fighting type would be enough to tone down Revvy's attack. Regardless of what moves hit, Locke would throw a Pokeball immediately.

@,@,

Miles was racking his brain for ideas, these grunts were unusually strong. From all the stories Miles had been told he'd assume they would be of no issue. Just then he notices a boy with green hair who quickly told him and his partner to chase after the escaping Aqua grunt. Normally, Miles wasn't one to run from a fight but this time he figured he would be better off chasing the last Aqua grunt and help this girl save her Pokemon. As such Miles gave the mystery trainer a quick nod and sped off after the grunt along with his two Pokemon, catching up to Stella in the process.

"Ok I'm gonna try something." he told Stella as he reached for a Pokeball and sent out his newly caught Wingull. "Okay Wingull use Super Sonic to confuse that Swalot. Frogadier, I want you to use Smoke Screen on the grunt so he can't see. Both of you make sure Cottonee stays safe and don't let this guy get away." Miles said still running.

"Gah!" Anton suddenly squeaked as he hit the wall of the cavern, the Zubat flying closely overhead. Thankfully, he had a nice grip on the Claw Fossil, which he then stuffed quickly in his bag.

Great... I think those screams just a tick ago were from Team Mortar... I need to find out of a way out of here without being noticed... Gah, why is my curiosity getting the best of me when it comes to being cold? There's only one last option for this... And I don't think it's healthy for the both of us... But...

Without a single warning, Anton got out a Pokeball, surprisingly withdrawing Roserade back inside. And after shoving it deep within his bag, he made a running start. With a somehow skilled diver's leap, he dove into the water, trying to swim his best up the stream to avoid the grunts.

Lurele turned to smile at Locke, spinning Wurmple's pokeball on her fingertip.  Before catching the pokeball and putting it away, she tilts her head slightly as she watches the little pokemon get chased by Locke's Gengar.  "Aww, that's adorable..."  Looks like I picked the wrong patch of grass...  He gets to try and catch that cute little thing, and I caught a worm.  She'd never say something like that out loud, though.  Wurmple was hers now, so that made the little guy family!

Watching as Locke threw the pokeball, Lurele grins and calls out "Hey, I won!" before turning to walk closer to the lake.  Luke and MiMi follow her down to the bank, and Lurele crouches down to dip her fingers in the water.  "Huh, this route leads straight into the water...  Did this really used to be a town?"  She glances around the shore of the lake, partially wishing she had a water type pokemon who could swim down and confirm it for her.

The fleeing Grunt clapped his hands to his ears as the supersonic caused his eardrums to reverberate, but the Swalot tripped. Wierd, I didn't know they had feet. The Grunt, seconds later, stared coughing and wiping his eyes, unable to see. He still ran, but ran blindly, and turned slowly, as if to unintentionally run off the edge of the bridge.

((Trades are allowed, although I'd imagine Locke would want something more than a Wurmple for a potential Gallade.))

Indeed, Petalburg was now a lake. Not the entire city had been sunk, and one building stood on the north edge of the lake, which provided a way around the lake to Route 104. Grimer flourished on the lake edge, and Tentacool could be seen out in the water. A Burmy hung from a tree, as did a few Wurmple. One tree was buzzing menacingly, and another was wiggling. There was an odd shrub near the entrance to the abandoned building.

Tuathal tried to think. Those claws looked like they'd win in a straight slugging match. It's not like Jarvis couldn't hold his own, though, and at least uproar was slowing it down. "Jarvis, sidestep and use comet punch!" At the last moment Jarvis attempted to dodge to the right and lashed out with his fists.

Once Uproar ceased,  Zangoose started running forward full speed. Looks like it hadn't expected to be let off so easy. Overcompensating, it ran right past Jarvis, who hit it with several Comet Punches, OHKOing it, but not without getting grazed by a glowing claw.

"Good job," the Ace Trainer said. "You've passed the Offense Challenge. Lucky you didn't pick defense. That could take you hours, depending on what Sophie chooses to send out." He smiled, withdrew Zangoose, and held up his arms. "You have a choice. To my left is the Speed Room, and to my right is the Evasion Room. Move forward, Trainer."

Next door, it seemed that Cass was still battling the Munchlax.

Tuathal gave a sympathetic wince as Jarvis was grazed by the claw, but it seemed like he was okay. More importantly, the Zangoose was knocked out and he had won! He returned Jarvis to his ball and nodded to the trainer before heading through the door to the speed room.

An Ace Trainer, nearly identical to the one in the previous room, stood waiting for the Challenger.

"Welcome to the Speed Room," the trainer said. "Know that you have to battle two more trainers before you can reach Norman. Including me. Each Gym Trainer has one pokemon each, and you may not leave the gym challenge until it is completed, or until you've reached Norman, without having to start the process over. Knowing this, if you are ready to battle, send out your first pokemon, and this battle can begin."

Cass's battle sounded distant. Seemed she was still in the Defense Room.

Unlike the previous trainer, this one did not wait for Tuall to send out a pokemon. He had already sent out a Persian.

Glancing back to see that Locke had caught the Ralts, Lurele grins and starts to walk around the lake a little.  I should fill out my party as soon as I can...  Once we take care of that I can start tailoring my team to suit our style more...  She glances at her pokemon following her and grins, then gestures around them.

"C'mon guys, spread out a little, help me explore.  MiMi, go take a look at that buzzing tree, would you?  Luke, check out the shaking one.  I want to take a look at the house that's still up, so we'll meet up there if they turn out to not be anything interesting...  Don't worry, I'll be watching both of you, alright?"

Both of her pokemon stared at her, not moving.  After a short pause eventually the Mienshao sighed and started walking over towards the buzzing tree - she knew better than to argue with Lurele...  Her trainer rarely budged once she'd made a decision like this.  Luke, on the other hand, crossed his arms across his chest stubbornly.  "Caarrrr, lucario."  I'm not letting you go wandering off alone in a strange new area.

Returning the stubborn Lucario's stare, Lurele giggles and suddenly leans over to kiss the top of the pokemon's head.  Luke blushed and quickly staggered backwards, and Lurele took the opportunity to turn the pokemon towards the tree she'd asked him to take a look at and give him a little shove.  "You worry too much Luke, Wurmple will be with me.  I want to see what's making the tree shake, c'mon!"

Tuathal looked at the Persian for a moment and thought about what to do. After a moment of thought, he tossed out No-name. He wasn't sure if his idea would work, but it was worth a shot at least, and No-name hadn't done any real fighting recently, so he ought to be well-rested. "I'm ready when you are. Go ahead and make the first move."

With the grunt no longer blocking Litwick and Cottonee from returning to Stella, the two raced towards her and jumped into her arms, knocking the trainer down. "Alright." She said, giggling slightly. "Both of you return!" With that, both Cottonee and Litwick were returned to their pokeballs, and Stella got up. "Well... I guess that's over..." She murmured to herself.

A light could be seen up a steep passage behind the crystal formation.

Finally, land! Why is everything so cold in this region?! It's almost worse than Route 216! Urgh!

Anton began to sputter a bit as he got licked right in the face by a Seel, getting right on the cold ground and shaking quite harshly. He wasn't exactly the fastest swimmer possible, but he couldn't have been caught by those grunts...

"What kind of Pokemon are these...? Ice? Maybe... I should see how they react?"

With a cautious step, Anton started to walk towards the large ice formation, trying not to alarm the Pokemon nearby.

@,@@Ampharos,

Upon approaching the tree, the buzzing grew much more ominous, sounding almost territorial. It would probably be unwise to disturb it.

@,

Tuathal looked at the Persian for a moment and thought about what to do. After a moment of thought, he tossed out No-name. He wasn't sure if his idea would work, but it was worth a shot at least, and No-name hadn't done any real fighting recently, so he ought to be well-rested. "I'm ready when you are. Go ahead and make the first move."

"Fake Out!" Like Lighting, the Persian sped up to right in front of the Poliwhirl, leapt, and clapped its paws together. A large shockwave emanated from its paws, blasting Poliwhirl back and off its feet.

The green-haired trainer was still battling the Mightyena on the bridge, and while the Crawdaunt had been defeated, a Shiftry had taken its place on the battlefield. The grunt with the Swalot comically fell of the side of the bridge, unable to see, and landed with a splash in the deep water below. Spluttering, he swam to shore and fled into Slateport, withdrawing his Swalot as he went.

In this safe haven for ice pokemon in such a tropical region, they were not alarmed. Indeed, one brave little Cubchoo walked up to Anton and sat right on his shoe as he examined the intricate ice crystal.

On closer inspection, it seemed carved, as there was a pattern of yellow notches in the shape of a short cross on one side. Various other crystals portended in places. Odd.

@,

Tuathal barely even saw the Persian moving before No-name was knocked to the ground. They weren't kidding when they called this the speed room. He hurried to think of something he could do to fight back before his opponent acted again. At those speeds, he doubted there would be enough time to pull off hypnosis as he'd planned, and that left him with few options. But maybe he could trip it up and slow it down. "No-name, use water sport!" The poliwhirl sprayed water all around him, soaking the floor. Hopefully the Persian would slip up on the water, or at least be slowed down enough to give No-name time to do something.
