What's happened to Spike this season?

Seriously. Does anyone else miss the guy? He had a big role in Power Ponies and, er, that's pretty much it. For example: he was technically in "Three's a Crowd" but had about one line, and that's pretty representative of his role this season as a whole. Someone tell me if I'm imagining things but he seems to have been turned into a complete non-entity.

I think that Hasbro is more focused on the Mane 6 rather than Spike.

Yeah spike had a big role in Power Ponies, and had one line in Three's a crowd and Bats! episode.

But again, I just think that they are more focused with the Mane 6 cause spike isn't really much of a main character as some of us think that he is. I don't like spike all that much from the rest of em because he just doesn't fit my character expectations. I live with that fact.

Hasbro might have Spike involved in every episode as either a big role, one line, one appearance and so forth. We'll just have to wait and see,

They are just focused more on the Mane 6 than Spike, he will probably have another episode centered around him and we will have to wait and see. That's about it.

I hope so. I just find it a little strange that he's been made so low profile this season. Unlike Celestia or Luna, for example, Spike lives with Twilight, making his absence a bit glaring.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who misses him. Even his semi-starring role in Power Ponies wasn't very good. Basically just a reminder that he's not entirely worthless. I'd hoped that would be the turning point where they stop treating him as the butt monkey, but no. Right back to it in Rarity Takes Manehattan >_>

Hopefully there will be some better times for him later in the season.

It will happen. Besides, this isn't the first time where Spike isn't involved or mentioned in an episode. So, yeah.

There is always the idea of looking more into Spike's dragon background. Actually, have him investigate the origin of his egg and maybe find his parents. It would be a neat twist if it's revealed that his egg was stolen from his parents.

Keep in mind that we still have quite a bit of the season left. Spike will likely get more focus later.

Yup. People love to establish an observation and then run with it, I feel like. Power Ponies was more or less a Spike episode, and he's had a fair bit of screen-time, lines and overall impact on S4 between the premiere, the third episode, and others. I don't see how Spike's been subjugated to any neglect or what have you, especially considering we're not even halfway through the season yet. On top of all this, keep in mind that many of the episodes seen thus far have needed to focus on one or more of the Mane Six, because of the ongoing 'elements to open the mystery box' theme, Spike can't be on screen, half the time in every episode.

I also believe he's one of the characters that's hardest to write as a slow crawl.  One of the few issues he has is his lack of maturity, as he his a baby dragon, and that isn't easy to overcome in the quick span of a single episode.  One of the few times we see him actively overcoming the maturity issues realistically was in It's About Time and that was about something with almost immediate consequence.  As a result of episodes such as Spike at your Service, he's been written to come off as the punchline, which had finally been addressed in Power Ponies.  He wasn't given a goal like the Cutie Mark Crusaders and so has no driving force.  There is his crush on Rarity, but that should remain in the realm of a running gag.

With all this in mind Spike can start to develop a goal.  This was almost attempted in Dragon Quest, but was pretty poorly done, as the dragons featured were less mature than even Spike.  Still I would like to see him come to a realization that he needs to become more, much like how Twilight Sparkle ascended, he too needs to essentially evolve.  I've never pictured Spike as a pet, not even in Equestria Girls, that said I do picture him as the familiar of a powerful spellcaster.  As such the changes in Twilight should evoke a need to change in him.

At least this is what I'm hoping for.

I honestly have enjoyed what they have done with Spike so far. They have not focused on him too much because that is kinda what he is best at, supporting the rest of the characters. His role in Power Ponies was easily one of his better roles really and the lesson was great too.

I know we will see more of him, much more probably. The season isn't even half over with yet.
