Why I'm turning my back on FiM!

After watching several episodes from G1 I've come to the realisation that G1 is better than FIM. Let me explain:

•G1 was handrawn. Badly yes, but that took effort. Anybody can use Flash nowadays.

•G1 had better villians. Terak for example. He was a proper badass.Plus he was actually killed. Something that would never happen in FIM

.FIM in my opinion takes itself too seriously. The makers of the G1 show knew that the core audience would be girls so didn't try too hard

.The Brony community itself. With the rise of Bronydom the FIM creators have seemed anxious to please our every whim.If they are not careful Hasbro will begin to turn their core audience away.

These are just my opinions tell me if you agree...or not!

Personally, I always thought G1 looked downright hideous, while FiM looks nice and clean, but hey, that's just my opinion. Watch what you want to watch, no need to make a big deal about it.

Bronies are weird, yes. They whine about everything, occasionally. But we can't really compare the two generations fairly. The villains may be better in G1, but as far as I know, G4 has characters with more developed personalities.

I haven't seen much of G1, but I kinda enjoy it.

That's okay if you have your opinions. I still think g4 is the best but g1 was probably the most watchable out of the previous generations. The problem was the characters. Most of the characters were very boring and also well I get that the animation was limited to the time, I still found the actual designs to look a bit hard to look at.

You do realize that G1, along with just about every cartoon made in the 80's, was a 30 minute toy commercial? The sheer number of characters in G1 was just to sell more toys, and alot were just recolors.

And who cares if FiM isn't fully hand drawn? It doesn't make it any less art, then drawing everything by hand.

Also, the core audiance of FiM is EVERYBODY. We live in the 21st century, appealing to one group doesn't make as much money as it used to.

One more thing; having death in a show doesn't make it better. Even Transformers never had death, until the 1988 movie, and look how big that series is.

Let's be clear. That's exactly FIM's purpose as well. Just to shift as much stock as possible. The problem is the creators have forgot that!

At least they're honest about it. G1 was defenetly intended for young girls, and I really doubt they really were begging for a super villain, and death to be in their show about pretty colored talking ponies.

FIM is made to sell toys. I'm really tired of seeing this argument used against MLP cartoons that are other than FIM. It's a pointless comment/argument used to insult when it's the pot calling the kettle black. G4 is made to sell toys.

Well all I can say is have fun watching a 30 year old show, meanwhile we will still be enjoying ourselves with FIM

Kind of didn't need to be made into a topic / debate though since you are just stating why your turning your back on FIM, question though, if you are going away from FIM are you going to leave the forums as well? Since it's almost 100% centered around G4 :P

I agree with this completely. I always thought the older pony toys looked kind of creepy as well.

Yeah, I agree with these guys... G1 looked downright awful, there were plenty of nice looking hand-drawn cartoons, so they should have done better. The villains were more villainous, but does that make them better? Not really. The current gen takes itself seriously, and that's a good thing, it's what allows for such good character development - which G1 lacks.

G1 had that classic look, which I totally didn't mind. It wasn't as deep as FIM, but hey, I still enjoyed it.

I never said it wasn't. The only difference is, FiM wasn't originaly made for that purpose; where as, the original was. When FiM got big, then they focused on toys more, but they still haven't added a flood of characters to the main roster, like the original and alot of 80's cartoons, which were made from day one to advertise the toy line. FiM is kinda like Power Rangers, originaly wasn't made to pander toys (Although, PR was mostly done to increase raitings on a few networks), it did start to head to the toy route when the popularity became higher then expected.

Hey I still like this community it's just I think we're beginning to have a bit too much influence on the show! Take my 9yr old niece as an example. She was just beginning to get into the show but when she suddenly found out about us bronies she suddenly lost interest.

Even if that was the case, that's bad how? Shows should not be made just to move products IMO, product should come from good shows that warrant the production of merchandise. This is of course how most stuff works, except for the fact that Hasbro is a toy company so that is their priority.

I've never watched G1, and probably never will. It looks horribly drawn IMO which is enough to make me steer clear. As an artist myself I can see the merits in the classically drawn cartoons, but the newer stuff takes just as much work. It may not be hand drawn, but the story is a lot better then most old cartoons. The old generations are just creepy IMO though, it's like they drew the ponies from someones nightmare fuel rather than studying real ones. While the new ones are not realistic in style, at least they got the trot and stuff right by studying.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. If you don't enjoy FIM anymore, it doesn't need to be a multi-topic deal.

Guys, don't take the bait. From this persons post history they appear to be a really smart troll. It consists of these topics about G1, and asking people if they use illegal drugs.

So trading a commercial with lackluster characters with a show full of developed characters and world building is bad now?  I am glad Lauren Faust abandoned the old formula, the show fell to much into the female stereotype for it to be enjoyable by anyone outside of its intended audience. I will give that the story was a bit darker but that was literally at the cost of having any memorable characters. No matter how effortless it is to use flash vs handdrawn, G4 clearly put more effort in story, characters, even songs than any previous generation before it.

An important feature that draws a ton of people into FiM is the ascetics of the environment and characters.  I watched a few clips of G1, and I hate how it looks, so no matter how good the stories actually are, I would have a very hard time enjoying myself.  FiM is very very pleasing to look at.

How does liking a previous generation make me a troll? Just because I don't love everything about our community or the show also doesn't make me a troll!
