ooc A Temporal Odyssey (Yes, DJ's back!)

Umbral Noir

And now, the ponies are about to begin their mighty quest to uncover this mystery mayor! When Sterling is ok for course :P Be warned, this will not be an encounter for the faint of heart (sorry Chronos :P ). When we are ready , let's move out with a new ally in tow and teach these changelings a lesson!

Wish they'd fix that bug that makes you unable to see what topics you posted on... it's making it difficult to see what I need to reply to! O_o

Btw, made Clover an alicorn partly cuz of a conversation I had with a friend on how annoying it was that a lot of people pick on alicorn OCs and accuse them of being overpowered and perfect solely cuz they're alicorns. I'm currently sporking a terrible fic that has a pegasus Gary Stu who is ten times worse than any alicorn could be, and I've also encountered quite a few unicorn and earth pony Sues, too. It's the character that makes the Sue, not the species. Anyway, my friend challenged me to make one of my own OCs ascend. XD So I figured it was time to have Clover ascend, as she was the only one who was really right for the role. However, I plan to use her ascension as a character building exercise, as she gets used to her new role and has to deal with her feelings about being a Princess.

I do have a fanfic alicorn OC, but I haven't imported him over here and I have zero intention of doing so, either. He stays in my fanfic. I worked hard to make him well rounded, with faults and character failings, and I think that I have succeeded. He also marries the mayor of Trottingham, an earth pony mare, and they have a foal.

You know what trope really bugs me? "Good Ol' Fisticuffs"

http://tvtropes.org/...odOldFisticuffs

In short, it's saying that a rough and tumble brawler will beat the trained martial artist. You all can imagine why I take issue with this fallacy.

95% sure I'm going to get blasted apart for suggesting this, but I've been playing the hell out of Ace Combat X recently. In the final operation, you're supposed to shoot down stealth fighters with digital optical cloaking abilities, and to make matters worse, they have microwave weapons that shoot purple balls of death at you. It was nothing short of intense, and it seemed like it could translate well in the RP. Think about it, having to fight cloaking evil alicorns or changelings with giant energy balls of death would be pretty crazy imo.

While it is a good idea, I'm afraid there might be a slight problem with it JP :( It's just that we've been going for a sort of theme where technology hasn't really come very far, like the most hi-tech firearms available are only flintlocks. The cloaking technology and microwave weapons is far beyond the technology the ponies would have available in the story. However, I may be able to find a way to incorporate it into the story later on after all... ;)

That sounds like it could work further down the line. Don't know how it could be worked into this particular town scenario though.

They definitely could have magic instead of microwave weapons. Plus they can cloak themselves with magic alone anyways lol. Just substitute high tech for magic in other words.

J.P., you and the Captain bring up an interesting point.

Sci-fi is not just fantasy with bolts and computer coding slapped on. Both genres, while vast and malleable, come packaged with conventions and tone that the author either has to play with, or work to subvert depending on their intention.

Science fiction, in general, is very introspective of it's own conventions.

Military science fiction usually not only talks about how new weapon systems are bing implemented, but the ethical considerations surrounding them. Or even why the war is being fought in the first place. (Ender's Game or Starship Troopers)

Fantasy, on the other hoof, uses it's conventions to convey a deeper meaning upon the audience's world.

Most fantasy settings don't concern themselves with the ins and outs of why their magic works and just settle on how it works and then move on. If war arises, it's usually very clear who the villains are and the conflict is not if it's right to fight them but to what extent you are willing to go in order to do so. (Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.)

One could be one on the surface, but have the tone of the other though.

John Carter of Mars, while taking place on Mars, with green martins, guns, and atmosphere generating facilities; is without a doubt a fantasy story. The hero is an immortal who is a peerless fighter, who comes and conquers an entire planet through his skill and charisma. Along the way experiencing an odyssey of friends, royals, monsters, and rivals.

Do any of you stallions and mares play any MMORPGs?

@,

FYI my first "strike" wasn't an attack. A "check" is when you control your opponent in some way. Such as checking their arm so they can't counter you.

I get your post, my attack did not work, I just wanted to be clear it was a single attack with a defensive move, not a double assault.

Btw, I'm not posting with Clover cuz I want it to be somepony else's turn to defeat an enemy, also, I don't want Clover doing everything every time the gang meet with a baddie. She's raised a shield, that's enough. XD

Actually Captain, there is something that needs to be addressed about my post.

Predicting the attack, Klackon quickly retreated, trying to avoid whatever Steel was planning. As the following strike came down towards his shoulder, he brought his front hoof up, clashing with the sword

How could he do that if I was checking both of his legs? That's one of the benefits of dual wielding, you can defend with one weapon while attacking with the other.

Look, my post was not intended to be a fatal blow if that's what you are worried about. I don't mind being thwarted as long as it makes sense how I was. It's not like my technique is completely un-counterable anyway.

I'm sorry... :( I really am having trouble understanding... Would move back from your opponent not keep you from being checked? I... I just don't understand really...

I am enjoying it, no worries~

Justa tad bit stuck on what to do... Like, what does an undersized colt and filly do to stop a changeling? Get some rope and make 'im trip?

So I took this personality-test... And apparently, I'm most like Fluttershy~
2015- edit - not too much has changed, but now I'm a wee bit more like Twilight~

Actually . . . that sounds exactly like what North would do. I mean the CMC have never been unwilling to act in the face of danger.

Actually, if you did want to try and pull something, force alone doesn't seem to be working.

@@Zhooves, That would actually be useful; I expect Klackon discounts North, which could be to North's advantage!
