Idea: Rotating Banners

Hi! So, I've had the idea for a short time of asking if it were possible to make banners rotate. I don't mean in a circle, but as like 5 different banners switching out randomly each time a member will refresh their page or just browsing the website. This is possible, I believe, as there is another forum I know of that has that feature. I had the idea of members who submit their banners will be on a list, and each month (or however long banners usually stay up), 5 banners will be switched out, and so on down the list. It's just an idea I had in case there are usually a lot of members who submit banners, this way everyone could see the banners made by the fandom! Like I said, it's just an idea, go easy on me. ^^"

I've seen this on other forums and it's a great idea.  I really like it.  It makes for an easy announcement billboard basically.

This has been mentioned many times, and some even asked if they could pick their own banners that have been used in the past, but if I'm not mistaken, it hasn't been implanted even after many requests from the community.

A rotating banner should not really be that hard to implement, however we like to keep one specific banner for the site. Our idea is to use one banner after each new episode, then when the season is over; one banner for each month or similarly. When a certain banner has been used for a specific period of time, it kind of becomes a mark for that specific period which you then will remember if you, for example look at the banner archive (which now is dead, apparently). A long time ago, there was a thread about a request of custom banners, where every user could pick whatever they wanted. I am aware that you do mean that each and every person will get to see the same banners, however a week is not really such a long time for the use of one banner. Using multiple ones is not really necessary. I'll try answer Azura here as well with a quote from Feld0:

 

"ensuring that everyone sees the same banner is important for building and maintaining the community here. With a group of people as large and diverse as MLP Forums, the banner we stare at for a week is an element that all of us can gather around."

 

Additionally, a reason why the banners has not been changed a lot recently is because no one really has the time to create one. Even if there's a few people who does, we can't accept just anything. It has to be a relevant banner with a somewhat good design. Personally, I am allergic to stretched vectors and transparency errors. Basically, if we do not have enough good looking banners to cover each week, I doubt we will be able to cover 5 banners a week, which means that the community or staff would have to produce 35 banners a week. Even 21 for 3 banners a week would be overkill.

 

I think it is better to stick with what we have now and maybe discuss a change further on if we do see an increase in terms of interest, but as for now I doubt it will be implemented.

 

 

I've seen this on other forums and it's a great idea. I really like it. It makes for an easy announcement billboard basically.

 

Actually, MLP Forums has a box right under the banner where we make small announcements :)

Ah, Jokuc, I see that little box.  I think I have it disabled from my homepage... not sure what that setting is.  I think by "announcements", I meant like breaking news banners and such.  Something that people won't miss.

Banners don't change weekly because Lavo went and fucked up our banner submission process by throwing in a second theme :3 Everything is Lavo's fault, always. Remarkably few people are interested in making banners for the new size, possibly from the loss of nostalgic feels, and even fewer are interesred in making two themes. At some point in the future the staff will be killing one of the two themes and we'll be working to get the banner submission proccess out of the rut.
