Are there too many Unicorns in FIM?

After reading The Last Unicorn, I've been thinking that there are far too many unicorns in MLP. Unicorns are supposed to be rare, elusive creatures, and having so many takes the mystery away from the legend. Maybe only Celestia and Luna should've been unicorns?

Well, Equestria was a "combination" of the 3 kingdoms, so I guess it makes sense. If any kind of pony would be rare to see it would be the pegasi since they are in the sky and lives on clouds and stuff.

Equestria is a land of magic, pastel colored ponies. I don't see why Unicorns would be elusive there.

 

besides, if Twilight wasn't a unicorn, how could she represent the element of magic?

Eh, I disagree that they're supposed to be scarce, as that's more the Earth mythology rather than the Equestrian world dynamic.  They had their own kingdom after all. Really, they can be thought of as their own sub-race or genetic variation of the common pony, rather than a rare mythical creature--at least when it comes to Equestria.

The unicorns in the Last Unicorn are very different from these unicorns, MLP unicorns are far more powerful but are much smaller and chubbier.

I do have to say that Amalthea out of the last unicorn was a bit weak, but then again their use of magic was different from FIM. Also there are already wizards in the last unicorn, so unicorns don't need to defeat baddies.

Except that wizards are rare and skilled ones even rarer. Amalthea is no weakling, but against the raw power of even an average MLP unicorn, she is woefully outmatched.

As for pegasi, considering that feathers=fuck in the MLP world (no pony gives a flying feather) you can just call them feather ponies

The Unicorn (amalthea) wasn't weak, she had the strength to leave everything she knew, a safe protected life in her forest to go out an find those of her kind. She went through all that and was turned into a human where she had to adjust, plus being human her magic was not as strong. If she had stayed human eventually she would have forgotten and lost her unicorn self; and as a unicorn she managed to find friends who helped her in the end to save her race from imprisonment in the sea.

 

It's more a story of growth than anything else.

 

I actually like the cartoon better than the book, which I've read the book a number of times, but the music, animation and plot of the cartoon simplifies the story.

 

Actually if you go on facebook and look at the page, the Last Unicorn has been having special screenings of the movie because I think it's some kind of anniversary for the film. Totally wish I could go to one but everywhere they've had it is super far away from me.

The show takes artistic license with mythology.  Pegasus was born of the blood of Medusa.  Do you think that's where the Pegasi in this show came from?

 

When you think about it, alicorns in this show are more like unicorns of myth.  They have to be pure of heart and are exceedingly rare.
