Why is the offical MLP merch so mediocre?

Of the numerous things wrong with that plush, the eye is the least explicable.

The entire plush is inexplicable. D:

Maybe some needleworkers are incorporating expressionist interpretations of the mane 6 into their plushies now

LOL, maybe they are! XD Seriously, that plush freaked me and my boyfriend out. I'm looking for a good Fluttershy or Rainbow Dash plushie. If you know of one, kindly let me know. Anyone! ^w^

Because Hasbro is a cheapskate company, even by corporate standards. They want the most they can get for as little pay as they can get away with. Therefore, they cut corners with the conception, skimp out on the production line, and spend more money on crappy advertisements than to actually make the toys. They know people will buy them regardless and so long as they're making a profit, they don't see any incentive to improve quality.

There's also a much larger budget involved for the Transformers films than for MLP. Transformers involves a massive production crew, with high cost casts, and big budget special effects (and not much else). MLP involves a relatively smaller crew based out of Canada with a cast primarily of Canadian VAs (Tara Strong is the only American VA on the team, I believe). That cuts down even more costs, and may very well be part of the reason why the show is, in many ways, higher quality than Transformers it. DHX runs most of the show, while Hasbro merely does the financing.

Finally, the toys themselves: they don't cost much to make in the first place. Every basic figure is just tweaks of the same 3 basic vinyl shell. Transformers toys have a larger budget because of all the different molds and moving parts. Pony toys come with NO moving parts, and the only difference between two figures is the hair and the paint. Not much to a pony toy when you break it down.  It's a shame, really, but Hasbro's moved their attention to budgeting Michael Bay's movies than to putting out toys on the quality of what they used to be. A company whose products once were the level of Neca now produce toys on the level of Fisher Price. Even Hasbro considers their own products secondary to the kind of money they can rake in on a cinematic level.

Because if the quality of the product is higher, then the cost of materials increase, and the margin of profit decreases. Because they can charge however much they'd like so long as people continue buying it and without competition, don't expect the quality to be any better in a while.

However, I love my high quality custom minky plush by http://cinnamon-stitch.deviantart.com/

It's mass produced in a factory, in China. It's not going to be grade A quality. Though, I don't mind the quality of the brushables, minus Rainbow Dash.I've got 7 regular size 3'' brushables, 2 being Fluttershy,1 Glow In The Dark Zecora, 1 Trixie, 1 Lyra, a Rarity and one other random pony. I like styling their manes and stuff to show accuracy, and it looks pretty close to show accuracy. :squee:

And Hasbro probably makes more money selling the license to other companies to make high quality merch, than what they could make and sell them for.

It's hard finding quality merch, and when you do, there's usually a price to come with it. Especially when it comes to a good plush. I'm not too fond of the build-a-bear plushies or the fun rise because of the mane and tail style they went with. I'd rather a stuffed mane.

Fluttershy's lover, she's my waifu. I'm in love and obsessed with her, she's given me shyabetes. *Hnnnng*

That's too bad. I thought they were coming out with a vinyl Mrs. Cake. I still need to get four of them that I am missing.

that would be cool, and I'm missing twilight and trixie

I bought those two at the same time but I am missing Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Time Turner and Pinkie Pie. I think they should sell a full scale Sweetie Drops, Zecora, Rarity, Applejack, and Cheerilee. That Babs Seed isn't as good as the Mrs. Cake in my opinion.

Yeah, I've got a Build-a-Bear Pinkie myself. I don't know why they chose to do "real" hair instead of cushioned manes (like 4DE's plushies), but I imagine if it's nothing to do with cost, then it's something to do with "giving little girls something to brush". To be fair, though, the Spike plush looks 100% show accurate, so that's something, anyway.

Yeah when I saw the hair on all my Build A Bears I thought they wanted to make them like the brushable  3 in ponies from Toys R Us. Heck it is even fun for me to brush the hair and Sweetie Belle's is all curly which looks great. Frankly I think the Build A Bear's are high quality and are way better than the MLP plushes from other toy stores. They are better than a dog plush I got from Build A Bear who has an under stuffed leg that makes him look like I gimp(I can say that word since I have Cerebral Palsy myself LOL)

The official merchandise tends to be of a lower quality because it is not intended for a demographic known for being very picky about things like accuracy or aesthetic appeal.

Which includes those of us who can't afford/aren't willing to drop hundreds of dollars on some meticulously-crafted handmade plushie.  Seriously, not all of us just have extra piles of money that can be spent on "quality merchandise."

Even then I think that people are a little too hard on the official merch.  It's come a long way in the past couple years, and to ignore that and claim that it's not good enough just comes across as horribly snobbish, IMO.

I have seen good quality unofficial merchandise for as cheap as thirty dollars.
