The Terrible Ponies Blog, Infamous Blog of Pony OCs

Recommended Posts

So, Iv'e seen this blog called Terrible Ponies, and it housed many pony OCs that are neon, alicorns, or that are 'Mary sues'. Most bronies and Psisters hate it, and therefore hate the person that comments on the ponies, Citrus. Sooo what do you think about this tumblr?

Most OC's are bad. There are assholes out there. The wonderful thing about blogs though are that you can choose whether to follow it. Some people like bashing other peoples work, some like critiquing those same works. Others can appreciate all OC's and should not bother themselves with the blog. Let it be, and just ignore it if you don't like it. Not enough people in all walks of life understand that. 95% of things you see in life are purely by your choice. You choose to see something, and you choose to let it bother you.

@, can you add a link in your original post to the blog you're talking about? There might be people who don't know it.

A lot of OCs suck, but there's no reason to point that out and make people feel bad. I mean, it's common knowledge that a lot of OCs aren't very good. No need for reinforcement, especially in this kind of manner.

While I'm not going to go out and be a jerk to the guy who runs it, can't say I approve of his behavior.

I agree with @@ghostfacekiller39. Yes, some of the OC's there are hilariously, cringeworthingly bad. Yeah, it's funny. But is it funny to the person whose OC wound up on that blog? ...No. It's hurtful. And to knowingly cause harm to another human being for your own amusement is a rather disgraceful thing to do.

The key thing to remember here is most of these artists are very young. In their tweens or teens, usually. They're still learning how to create a good character with a good design. Some of them have a long way to go, true. But this kind of 'feedback' is absolutely useless. Either the artist will feel humiliated, useless, and give up entirely, or they'll clamp down and start ignoring critique altogether. That is not helpful.

If you want to critique someone's OC, you should do so with tact, consideration and above all, in a manner which preserves the dignity of the person being critiqued. You should also suggest ways forward, ideas they may like to consider, so they can actually improve. That site does none of this. It is purely and simply an entertainment blog which achieves nothing but a few giggles at the expense of another persons' emotions, pride and personal development.

Then how one could know his OC is awful?

No one is taking it from them. They can still use it themselves. But every author should be prepared for critique. If no one criticizes your terrible work, you can think that it is good and make more terrible work. Constructive critique helps improving your skills.

I agree with that.

and make people feel bad.

I agree, this "side effect" is unnecessary, and it is possible to criticize without making people feel bad. But sometimes it is not so easily avoidable.

You took what I said out of context. Constructive criticism is totally understandable and needed to develop your skills in a given area; destructive criticism, such as this, serves no purpose other than to hurt people and isn't needed.

No I didn't. The rest of your sentence is just right there, a bit lower. I just wanted to comment both parts of it separately, because each part made me think about something else. And I put another comment in between, because it was a continuation of the first thought.

I'm not saying you're against constructive critique, I perfectly understand what was your original intent. Sorry if you took it that way.

The one who runs the blog is rarely a dick about the oc's. It's the submitter who's the dick about the oc's.

Just letting you guys know that. Over half the text below the pictures or the link tends to be from the submitter. Sometimes the blogs owner is the one with comments though. Personally I don't really mind the blog, as long as the comments don't get too mean spirited.

Sad, but true.......there are some very bad OC's i've seen.   However, reading the blog, its just rude, IMO.  His behavior just sucks.  I'm planning to have one very soon, involving an Alicorn, w/ Descriptive detail, but unlike many other individuals, I always like to ask ppl's opinions on what they think of the character..............like a critique on what should be added/removed, etc.  IMO, if ppl want to have an Alicorn as an OC, they should somewhat add specific detail on where do they derive from as in reference/similarities/etc.  Strengths/Weaknesses (nothing can be invincible)........and so on.

You know, this blog actually reminds me of another one that is also about how bad or good OCs are, except the creator accepts submissions and comments on what's wrong with each OC so that they can be improved upon.

If I could remember the name I'd share it. Maybe I'll go look for it again.

Okay, I'll be the harsh one here.

Honestly, if my OC was put as a bad OC, I'd laugh it off. Then work harder to make it not as bad. Terrible OCs are everywhere, not just with MLP. Pointing them out is all in good fun. Also, if your OC is bad, your OC is bad. You need to fix it, not be upset. I can understand that many people don't agree with me, but some people need the harsh criticism because they won't listen to constructive criticism.

@, totally agree. Bloated ego limits creativity. If one cannot see one's own flaws, and just feel sorry or mad about any critique, one will never have any opportunity improve.

People creates OC because of their imagination, though I admit some of creators are having too much imagination. Thank god I'm not of them. (although to be honest I just created one OC, haven't had any feedback yet)

But then again, I agree with Destiny and SasQ here. Bad OCs are bad OCs. Give them feedback, so they can do better.

Although I don't approve the harsh and non-constructive critique presented at the aforementioned blog, it has one useful and important feature: When someone will find his own OC there, he will also find a lot of similar bad OCs, and by comparison and generalization one should be able to figure out the "pattern" of what makes a bad OC, by looking at other people's bad OCs. They have much in common, so the pattern is made obvious by the multitude of anti-examples. This is better than just someone telling you what's wrong, because one picture is worth 1000 words.

Heh, I had one of my OCs end up on that blog once. It received a few amusing comments, but mostly positive ones!

Now, I just took a look at this blog and... yikes. I think a blog (such as this one! http://badponyocs.tumblr.com/ ) is fine as long as the person is nice and gives constructive criticism about it, but the blog we are talking about in this thread is just... gosh. I'm sorry, but that person seems extremely rude and acts like she's better than everyone else. Maybe she isn't really and just comes off that way, but... and tbh, her OC is alright, but... not the best I've seen. No offense! I hope this doesn't sound mean...
