Future villains in the show

I think we all know there is going to be a new villain in season 5.  What kind of villain or villains should be in season 5 and beyond?

My thoughts (note: this is going to be using some baseless head canons on my part):

The villain should be Grogar, but not as he was in G1 (being defeated by a bell is just pathetic).  He shows up in the premiere trying to take over part of Equestria.  Princess Twilight decides not to play with him and goes right for the Rainbow Power...which doesn't work on him.

Defeated and confused, the mane six look into this and find out that goats and sheep are resistant to magical attack and that the Rainbow Powers only repair imbalances, both of which makes the usage of the Rainbow Powers less effective against Grogar.  Thus, the mane six have to change up their strategy and foil him gradually, until they can capture him and send him to Tartarus.

This would require another overarching story with a reoccurring villain.  Grogar would be the Lord Zed to the Mane Six's Power Rangers.

Anything but a G1 villain.

I like some G1 villains (like The Smooze), but 2 in a row is a bit too much.

So an all new villain would be good.

Personally, I hope we get a slice-of-life finale without a villain, kind of like "The Best Night Ever" :D

In any case, I don't want a reoccuring villain with an overarching arc; slice of life with some action here in there has proved to be a winning formula in the past, present, and it will be in the future, too, based on how timeless the gameplan has proven to be.

If we do get a new villain, though, it should be a totally original villain that spans the two parter with an original motive. Overarching and reoccuring, like you said, would make the show too battle-oriented and take away from the quality, because it'd get dull fast.

Basically, don't overdo the new villain and make it original, and all will be right :D

A recurring villain, especially one with a terrible backstory (like sombra,) would be pretty annoying. A new villain could be fun

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it save equistria with its five candy coloured friends and shoot rainbows at bad guys using their necklaces and tiara unless you're celestia

To be honest, I was pulling for Grogar instead of Tirek for a long time as a villain that should make a return, only because I totally thought he was cooler. Tirek was still pretty cool, and it's nice that they worked Scorpan into the story too, but Grogar would've made me smile from ear to ear.

And for these people saying no more G1 villains... folks, if you liked Tirek, I don't see what the problem is. A new villain would be awesome too, don't get me wrong, but Tirek pretty much was a new villain. He didn't even act like his G1 self, not that there was much personality there to begin with in his G1 form other than him being a complete monster who even threatened to decapitate Spike if Scorpan didn't do what he said.

Either way, if we're speaking soley of original new villains, I'd like to see a dragon of some sort be the villain, either that or a griffon. I'd really like to see more of both of them, and having a new villain that's a griffon or dragon would be beast.

Well, there is this one villain for who'd be good for a few episodes that could really give the Mane 6 and Co. a hard time...

Something bad is coming down, have you heard the news...

I don't know how many times I've typed this out before but I really hope Sombra makes a come-back. That, and a dragon villain would be cool.

With Tirek introduced to G4 and the fan reception the likelihood of other G1 villains making an appearance has increased thanks to that precedent. Grogar was mentioned and rightfully so, but here is what I think would be a good take on Grogar. In G1 we saw Tirek use the Rainbow of Darkness as his main weapon which was able to corrupt anything it touched among things he used it for he used it to turn ponies into dragons to pull his chariot and in an attempt to bring in the "night that never ends." What if Grogar had this weapon? Granted bringing in the "night that never ends" would make him sound too much like Nightmare Moon but that is easy enough to tweak. The Changelings were able to feed on love and Tirek was able to feed on magic but what if Grogar is able to feed on the evil present in the ponies hearts? As we saw in the Return of Harmony two partner they all have some inner darkness and this was used against them by Discord but this can be used to an even greater extent, it could be used to make the Rainbow of Darkness even more powerful.

You know, for kids!

I have a feeling the 30th anniversary of Rescue at Midnight Castle might've had something to do with Tirek and Scorpan's "return".

Holy crap, I never realized that!

  • 3 months later...

Grogar was probably as powerful as Celestia, he needed a clear weakness, and the Rainbow of Light had no use on his dimension, so the G1 ponies were screwed.

Grogar also held his only weakness on his own castle, and he never left it.

Also, he's the only villain in the entire franchise that never got really defeated, he will come back eventually.

That's probably the best S5 theory I've read so far. Grogar was already incredibly powerful, with the Rainbow of Darkness he would be totally undefeatable.
