Pony Anatomy, defining body structure

If ponies were real...seriously, what would their anatomy be like? I took a step away form the traditional stylized form ponies are normaly drawn in, and avoided doing horse anatomy, to come up with this hybrid body structure.

 

First thing you'll notice is the torso is actually very human and less horse like. It's the only thing that made sense, considering how Equestrian ponies don't have their arms locked in the same way real ponies do. They have a much greater range of motion, so I went to what I knew with human anatomy to make this work in defining the muscle structure.

 

So what do you think of my weird galloping Earth Pony? What should I work on?

The hind legs appear to have a 180 plus degrees of articulation on one joint as well. Not to mention the thighs also move up and down when they walk. I find the joints to be very interesting. Also stop me if this isn't what you where looking for or what i said is just plain wrong.

The torso, mostly in between the front legs and the hind legs, looks a bit long, but other than that, that's better than what I can currently pull off XD!

Wow the sketch art looks quite... Natural to the eye! I've been around sometime on the internet to see some fizzle dizzle but this isn't freaky or unnatural it looks quite natural! Good job! Any further improvements?

Anatomy is something a lot of people struggle with. I myself struggle with limbs. Your limbs aren't bad, but they could use some work. The joints are in weird places and look a bit... unnatural. I know you were going for something different, but I honestly cannot imagine this sort of anatomy working in real life. The leftmost leg bends way too far down the leg. It should be higher up. Your back leg looks too short whilst having a thigh that is too long.

 

The neck is also too thin and could use some thickening up.

 

And the spine bends at a very strange angle. That butt is way too high. Either lower the backside or give the torso more definition - make it thicker as it looks like this pony could easily snap in half from moving. I'd suggest going here to get a better understanding of human anatomy at different angles. Or perhaps drawing the pony first in a static pose as a bigger sketch and finalizing the design before you go for something more complex.

 

Very clean and nice-looking sketchwork though. And I like the tail. :3
