What happened to the forums?

What's up with the forums these days??? It seems like people hardly post anymore, even though there are over 100 people online most of the time. I remember when everyone used to always be constantly posting, so we would always be having discussions, but ever since I came back to the forums, it seems completely dead, like no one bothers to post stuff anymore. Is it because of the character limit? Are people to lazy to type 100 characters, so they don't bother posting at all? If that's true, then the character limit is seriously ruining the forums. I would have thought that with the forums gaining so many new members, that there would be even more people posting, but it seems like the opposite. Also, most of the members who used to post a lot don't even post hardly anymore. Not sure what the deal is, but you guys need to post more!!! Seriously!!!

Then why not revive the old thread that you had so much fun conversing in? That's certainly not against the rules.

Because when I do try that, they get buried again ;_;

I don't see any decrease in activity for me. Just the other day I had my second locked status from 100 replies--and the threads are still bustling with comments. The S3 threads so far have gotten over 100-300 replies in a day, and that old thread I revived of "Y U NO LOVE APPLEJACK" was quite active.

The limit really doesn't bother me all that much--all it takes is about 10-20 words at most.

The sentence above ^ for example, proves it. But new people leaving because of warning points might be a problem, I agree.

Duplicate threads, duplicate threads, and duplicate threads.

2 out of every 3 new threads I see are duplicates of others. Why post in a new one and bury the older one even farther in the graveyard? It's quite angering to see that some threads that I had the most fun conversing and debating with other member is gone because someone else maed teh saem thred xcept spelt liek this.

That's why you report duplicate threads so they can either be locked, or merged. Duplication threads get hidden from member and guest view after a few days of being locked, so effectively, duplicate threads are not going to be an issue. If members report them, they can help the staff get them out of the way even sooner.

I don't see that as a deterent from posting, honestly. A nuisance that people don't use the search function yes, but not an outright detterent. Duplicate threads are common but there's fifty+ threads on the front page of each discussion forum, and realistically, less than ten get duplicates made of them.

Report, pony on, post on :3

I think the forums are fine. I've seen all kinds of activity in the short month I've been here...

I'm talking about months ago though...

Where does it say that in your blog entry?

Well what I meant was that I'm comparing the forums now to the forums months ago. People used to post a lot more months ago it seems like to me

I agree with Scoots' post. That pretty much ends the discussion in my view. Forums change over time, but our activity is still there. If the minimum causes true issues and noticeably begins to send people away to a point where our activity is effected by it, we'll act. And as far as duplicate threads go, I answered that above.

Haha its not because the character limit. Well, atleast I hope so. It's because there's nothing to talk about that haven't already been discussed.

Two more things,

1. "Nopony posts anymore" because you mean your friends and other known ponies.

2. I like the character limit

New members don't post either...they make an account, make one post, and then just leave.

I hate the character limit. It's easy to see how it might encourage quality, but some posts just need fewer characters. One thing is that it pretty much forces users to make their posts wordy and thus weaker. I admit that I've had to resort to passive sentences and to be verbs just to convey a short idea. Some posts just don't need explanations. Sometimes, a reply as simple as "no" works better. Sometimes I just want to emphasize one word or phrase.Adding fluff ruins the effect.

And frankly, it's harder to be witty with a character limit.

Okay, errybody I think the actual discussion is done here.

It's becoming more "This is why you're wrong," countered by a "This is why YOU'RE wrong," on a rinse and repeat cycle. We all have our opinions on how the forums are doing right now and what we think should be done to fix them. If it is something you're actually considering, consult the administration rather than keep arguing with others about it.

And yes, I am being quite the hypocrite right now.

Dunno, but I mostly prefer to just post opinions in threads and even though sometimes good conversation occurs through that medium, statuses and PMs seem to be more effective when communicating with others/my friends in my experience here.

My excuse is exactly the character limit. I try to post every now and then, but mostly land on the 80 character mark, and ragequit the thread simply because I don't have any more to say. It's SO annoying...

I think the character limit should be removed asap >_>

Dude I've done that so many times and it's so frustrating -_-

I joined on the day (or maybe the day after, I forget) the character limit was implemented, and to be honest, I didn't even notice it until about a week and a half later, and that was because I saw the random change of font colour on the side of my editing box, not because it gave me a warning for not having enough content. If people were only going to say, "Haha! Yeah, I get it. XD" then I'm glad I wasn't here during the lack of character limitation.

With that said, the Forum Lounge does not have a minimum character limit and it is a wonderful place to engage in "short conversation". I frequent that area of the site quite a bit. RD92, perhaps you should consider joining me in the Lounge if you don't like the 100 character minimum in other areas.

I would chat in the "general chat thread" but there are like 5 billion posts a minute and it is really hard to keep up with everyone.

Just saying, but personally, I haven't seen an increase in quality. I mean, really, all that's lost is a snappy one liner. Also stupid posts, but I miss one liners.

I honestly haven't stopped posting as much as I usually do. I haven't slowed, and I honestly have no problem with the character limit. Other people though, just don't find the discussions enthralling.

Not something I've really noticed.

Even if the minimum did push some people away, I'd rather have more quality posts in exchange for a bit of activity, instead of raging activity with tons more posts less than a sentence long.

If people leave because of a character limit, that's not actual dedication to a community, in my honest opinion. The character minimum is not something that the staff wanted to implement from day one, it's just the only solution for quality post incrementation that works so far. It's alterable in the future, and the staff is always approachable about it.

What quality posts? It's like you guys never see these forums. Half of the posts are just adding in unnecessary, sometimes random sentences to pass the character limit. All it does is making talking harder. Sometimse what I have to say is 80 or so characters. Do I need to write a paragraph about anything? It's a forum, not some kind of fireside philosophical discussion. Length doesn't equate to quality: I've seen paragraphs of rambling and stupidity.

Maybe we don't have improved post quality because people don't have good enough things to say. We're a forum of people who watch my little pony, not an intellectual debate club.

As for the original question, it's because we have nothing to discuss. Everything's been discussed to death and the users who used to post a lot are bored of this place and have left. It's not a tight knit community of people who knew each other anymore, so it's gotten pretty faceless and boring.

That, and it's the "general chat thread". It's just kind of odd to chat like that.
