Why I am no longer a brony~

I have discussed this with many other users who were here in the olden days of Mlpforums, and with some people in a thread about "ex-bronies". I figured,

"Hey, why not just make this pretty much official in my blog?"

Well, I can safely say the Brony fandom is no longer a part of my life. That piece of me has dissolved due to the way the fandom evolved around me.

At first, I had a whole lot of fun with ponies and bronies. With so many creative artists around, a forum to talk on, and a show to wait for, it seemed like a match in heaven.

There was always that voice though. That voice in the back of my head who said that this would never last.

I never listened to it, or to the people who said bronies would end pretty soon.

Boy, was I wrong.

Now, the fandom hasn't ended at all. I am a tiny speck compared to the number of bronies in the world. But to me, the fandom is dead.

What used to be a nice, friendly environment, turned into a hate spewing hypocrisy. Now, the forum does a good job keeping this out (most of the time), but starting in summer of last year, I noticed it coming quicker than expected.

You can ask an old member, (Djenty for one), about my predictions for the fandom. I thought it would die by 2013. Well, for me, it has.

I still enjoy the show, do not get me wrong. People have tried to yell,

"YOU JUST DON'T LIKE THE SHOW, YOU CHANGED TASTE, HYPPOOOCRITTEEE".

Erm, no. I like the show. Not the fandom.

I still frequent the forums though. Friendships will never break due to a fandom I don't like. I made some awesome friends here, and had some amazing times.

And I can still post in the threads every once in a while.

So, for those that even bothered to read, get read for the hale/love/shutup/gaaaaay/ comments.

Edit:

Alright, I'll say what changed.

What used to be a happy little fandom with morals and values (even if they were based on a joke), people still lived by them. The community kept an open mind about new things, and didn't flip shit over "haters", or "new ideas."

Now, everywhere you look, you will see someone trying to convince a hater they're wrong, or flipping shit over a new pony.

Plus, the "powerhouses" of the brony fandom have turned into a terrible thing. Such as all media turns into.

Anyway, I advise you further elaborate on what has changed, otherwise people will come in here and flip shit and call you a hater.

Not a hater, I just think you are looking for the bad :/

You get what you search for, as something grows larger it necessarily grows in the amount of undesirables decide to call the fandom home, but you can't let that kill it for you.

There are still great and bright things that this fandom is producing, you can't just turn your back on they, not yet

Do you still brohoof? /)

I think I can relate, when I first saw the show I thought "this is actually pretty good" it was a little after that that I stumbled upon the forums. I thought the forums and the bronies in it were great people that I could relate to, and I was right.

But in the past week I have found myself not as eager to share my opinions and watch the new shows as before, I'm not sure why but (as mentioned above) I am finding the forums turning into more of a heated debate. I don't wish for others to hate bronies, but can you really blame them when you're frequently finding bronies forcing the show onto them.

As with any forum, I think once the fan base is big enough, you're going to find more opinions and biases. I do understand that people will still enjoy the show, and though some might stay, others will leave eventually and no one can stop that.

I still enjoy the show, and I might be still called a brony but I too have drifted away from the fandom.

That is more than likely due to the whole Twilicorn/EQ Girls nonsense... the same thing happened at the end of season two, and elsewhere. It's just a bit of silliness that we go through when big things be brought up. I personally am not a fan of it, but it keeps things interesting.

You can't seriously expect a fandom to be perfect, okay so there are jerks and idiots but that was the case from the beginning as well. You know what happened, the fandom got bigger and as it gets bigger certain parts of it including the bad can sometimes grow with it.

The only reason why it can sometimes seem like there is more bad than good is because those voices are often louder than the voices of reason and just because voices are louder and attract more attention dosen't mean they are more numerous.

... this is a statement focused on miniscule negatives in a world positives.
Positives and negatives on things like this are ambiguous terms.

You only focus on the bad, and because of that, all you can see is the bad.

There are some parts of the fandom that piss me off to no end. (i.e. Whining, Shipping) I still haven't left the fandom though. Because I focus on the fandom as a whole, not just the details and instances; the good or the bad. It's not all bad, there's good in the fandom, as well as bad.

Take the bad with a grain of salt. The good aspects of the fandom outweigh the bad aspects of the fandom. The fandom isn't bad. Though I will agree it's been annoying me lately. Give it a week or two, and everything will be back to normal.

Whatever. It doesn't matter either way.

If people are going to be that hyper-sensitive about the fandom, they're better off not being in it. That's one less person I have to hear whine about it.

True...

Also kind of ironic, because they say they hate those that whine and such.

It's a bit dead in spirit, I've seen pretty much everything the fandom has to offer, it's boring seeing the same things over and over, not to mention the amount of bronies there are now are increasing rapidly, turning what used to be a fandom into a sub-culture :S

The My Little Pony fandom isn't perfect. It never was - it's no better, and no worse, than just about any other online fandom no matter how many fancy slogans or labels we may give to ourselves.

As stated above, I think you're focusing too much on a particular aspect of the community, and allowing that particular aspect to color the way you view the community as a whole... in addition to that, I think you're probably looking at the past with rose tinted glasses, because we've always had the sort of folks that you're complaining about - it isn't a new phenomenon at all.

If you're still fond of the show, you're still a fan. There's no need to take it any further by debating whether or not a silly made-up label applies to you.

Remember how I said negativity begets negativity? This is the kinda stuff in talking about.

Yes, the fandom has gotten big, and is becoming almost a subculture, but is that inherently a bad thing? I don't think so, given the success of Trekkies, Tolkeins, and Whoovians. It's a matter of spirit, not size. Everyone has the right to experience the same "ponyjoy" (in the words of Sprocket) you got to experience. Denying them that just because they are only now joining the fandom is wrong, IMO.

If we can find a way to rekindle the old-spirit like Pinkazoid mentioned, and begin magnifying the best of the community while not letting us get overwhelmed by the bad (because all fandom a have bad in them, the fandom's health lies in its ability to overcome it), I think the Brony/MLP:FiM could have a bright future. But we cannot let ourselves drown in negativity.

I thought you of all people would never stop being a brony. You were always a great member of these forum and I wish you were still active on here, but oh well :/

Even if you don't care much for the fandom, there's no reason you can't still enjoy the show and the forums here. I mean I assume you still like us :/

I get it.  I've felt the same for a while but I mostly just focus on different parts, like writing little inane fanfics or reading them.  I haven't even watched the show in a while.  I just look at the parts I enjoy.

I think making a grandiose statement is a little unnecessary because you bring on that level of hate/whatever, but it is what it is.  Although, I do think the negative reactions to this are pretty funny.  Brony or not, love and tolerate still applies, right?  Some people seem to forget that.

Do what you do, sir.  Brony is just a label, anyway.  And actions speak louder than words.  Be a good person and I don't care if you call yourself. :)

No hard feelings. It's your choice. Our interests change. Good luck, okay? Sorry to see you go and that the bad side of the fandom is overwhelming you. :(

Some of you need to grow the fuck up.

If he doesn't want to be a brony anymore, stop trying to convince him to get back into it. It's pretty evident that he just isn't anymore. A real brony who followed by all of their little slogans and life-lessons would let him be.

As for my two cents, I agree with alot of the stuff you've said here Gary, but I can't help but keep coming back. To me, the good outweighs the bad, but if that's what you want then go ahead. No matter what happens, I'll be here as your friend.

I don't care if hasbro cancels the show and every other brony in the world becomes a blood sucking leach with a horrible personality. I will be a brony until I die, or until I turn into a robot, which sounds like the kind of situation I would get myself into.

Hmm, a lot more logical responses than I expected. To me, the bad outweighs the good.

The only factor that keeps me here is because in general, this forum is amazing. While I no longer classify myself as a brony, I will still visit the forum.

kinda don't get why some of You are so angry though. It is my choice, not yours. My opinion, not yours.

Never said yalls opinions were incorrect. Please don't say mine are.
