Back in the 90s, this was a basic Adventure game called MYST where most of the worlds, or Ages as the world's are referred to, are empty environments with very few other characters.

Exploring the Island of MYST, you basically had to find out the story about the world you're standing in by finding journals or by seeing how devices workYou even solve puzzles that would allow you to find your way forward.  

And you move from Age to Age through a special kind of Linking book where when you touch the linking panel, you warp out into that new Age.

That sounds like a really interesting game. I’ll have to keep an eye out for my switch. I always love a good story in a game.
