Star Force: The Force Awakens is one of the best examples of female empowerment in modern-day cinema. An excellent character that isn't any stereotype, is smartly written, and doesn't need to have any male to be treated as a stereotype.
Some of them are alright. I have no issue with Falcon in the Cap costume as he is a good friend of the original but others have introductions that are just plain shoddy.
If the character can work well without being defined by such an identity, it's successful. When the identity is the character, it's an issue. You can still address the identity as long as it doesn't consume the character.
