    My mom is underestimating how much I hate my friend. He's the cause of one or two suicidal thoughts, and yet she thinks that it's wrong to stop being friends with him.

      I don't know either. We still hang out, and hanging out is a thing friends do, but even if we're getting along he will eventually start to get annoying. I consider him 1% friend, 99% enemy.
