NGE was the first "real" anime I saw (bought on VHS back when UK Broadcast TV didn't have anime), but I don't recall the female pilots as being particularly cute, or even relatable. First time I even saw the concept was in Ouran High School Host Club, and even then, they seemed to be lampooning it.
Maybe I just don't watch the right sort of anime
