  3. If you disagree with an opinion or comment, have the guts to say it and express why. To respond with the "Crazy" brohoof — Crazy —  implicates the person expressing such a comment is mentally crazy or drives you crazy. It's an abuse of the reaction system and completely cowardly to boot.

  4. Well, as awesome hearing from you anyway even if only for a while, dear! Drop by again from time to time!

  5. Recently, I wondered whether I was way too harsh on The Crystal Empire or not. It's not a good episode, but one of the ten worst of the show? After being so sure for many years, I started not feeling so sure anymore.

Well, after thinking about it (and talking with @Captain Clark), I made a major grade change: you can find them all here, but as for TCE itself.

The Crystal Empire: F- ---> F+ (jumps twenty spots from #164 [6th-worst of the show] to #144 [the worst F+])

Why the change after hating it for so long? Well, I still hate it (and it's still my least favorite of the show), but I was also blind to some of its good qualities. The RM5 working diligently to keep the ponies, Spike, Sombra being a major sleeper threat whose impeccable patience prevents ponies from sleeping well at night (he was one of my biggest criticisms then, too; not anymore!), Sombra's defeat not coming from a bloated ego who willfully let his enemies beat him. It has many good moments. The test being the dominant drive to the plot (thus treating thousands of occupants as pawns), Twilight being more worried she'll fail the test thanks to Celestia than relieved for saving the Empire (partly because Celestia counted on her to protect the Empire), the moral about self-sacrifice bungled, two mediocre songs (plus the reprise), and Cadance suddenly being revealed as the new Crystal Princess hurt it.

Because of its massive jump, it's no longer in my bottom-10, nor is it the worst two-parter (that deservedly belongs to To Where now!). It's now:

    1. One Bad Apple
    2. Newbie Dash
    3. Fame & Misfortune
    4. Bridle Gossip
    5. Dragon Quest
    6. Rainbow Falls
    7. 28 Pranks Later
    8. Princess Spike
    9. Owl's Well
    10. Mare Do Well

It is a comeuppance to see 28 Pranks Later on the worst of list.

I personally don't hate The Crystal Empire (or To Where, actually) but different strokes for different folks.

  7. Josh Scorcher taking a month-long hiatus for two reasons: schoolwork and preparing to file a restraining order against Lily Orchard.

No one wants to go this far, but if filing an order of protection means Josh finally retrieving security and mental peace, then he needs to do what he has to do.

    1. Nyactis Mewcis Catlum

      Nyactis Mewcis Catlum

@Redeye You speak as though Josh was acting against the interest of Toon's victims, and yet it was Toon's victims who requested that he continue and keep Toon within his videos. Josh compromised between the two parties the best he could by keeping Toon in the videos but adding a warning as well as a summary for those who want to know what happened but don't want to hear Toon's voice. Editing Toon out of the videos would have only contributed to the pretending that he was never there and there was no association controversy, so it's hardly a solution.

Have you spoken with Toon's victims on this matter, or are you speaking for them by what you assume to be their opinion on the matter?

    1. Nyactis Mewcis Catlum

      Nyactis Mewcis Catlum

@Redeye Josh is not acting like he's in the right. He's acting like an abuse victim who is tired of taking abuse from his abuser. Which Lily is. Lily is his abuser, and despite him separating contact with her, she's still trying to continue to abuse him. She's spreading blatantly false information about him in order to damage his reputation.

I've been in his position where people spread false info about me behind my back, and in my case I'm not a big personality so it wouldn't impact me as badly or spread as much as the harm that Lily is doing. I was left basically isolated from people. People stopped contacting me, people would even blatantly tell me over IM they couldn't talk to me anymore because I was an awful person. The damage that had on me was so profound that even now, years later, I still have a bit of a reputation within the fandom that it happened in.

People who are saying Josh is throwing a fit have never experienced the widespread defamation. They think that it's simply "saying something bad about someone". But it's not the fact that Lily is saying something bad that is making it so damaging. She's intentionally rigging the YouTube algorithm so that his videos will not be viewed, or will even be taken down off of YouTube, which stifles one place he can have a voice. In addition to that, she's intentionally preventing people from wanting to associate with him; she's intentionally isolating him, which is something abusers very commonly do. This situation isn't in a vacuum, here, especially since Lily is very popular.

And given what happened to ToonKritic, where people have mass deleted videos including him, implicating someone of child molestation/rape is not something to take lightly. There is no doubt that if Lily actually intends to say such a thing that it will have serious consequences on Josh's social circle. It's an accusation that commonly goes without people thinking it through on the internet, because no one wants to be that person who overlooked it so harm was brought to a child. As a result, Josh will continue to lose friends, he will have videos and blogs made about him, he will be hounded in his inbox if not outright abandoned completely... It will be a nightmare for him. If it isn't already.

This is not a debate of "who's in the right and wrong" here. This is not an argument. This is someone trying to keep themselves out of harm's way.

  9. Josh Scorcher had enough of Lily's attacks and sent her a C&D yesterday, mandating she (and her brainwashed cult) stop libeling, cyberbullying, and harassing him, or expect legal action.

Of course, Lily and her overinflated ego won't comply (and published the C&D linked above).

    1. Nyactis Mewcis Catlum

@PoisonClaw I am not a lawyer and thus I cannot give legal advice, but what I have heard from lawyers is that libel is most certainly illegal, and it is part of the C&D that he is issuing. Calling him a "fake Marine" is actual provable libel if he's legitimately been a Marine.

It's amazing there are people in this day and age that still support Lily. She is an absolute jerk, and she doesn't even attempt to hide it. Even if you know nothing about the way she acts toward Josh (which is outright despicable), her videos often contain this scathing disdain for her audience and everyone around her and this arrogance that she props herself up with.

  11. An elaboration on my point made in a post that I wouldn't elaborate on there because it'd dilute from the point of my post: family-unfriendly aesop shows definitely have a place in media. I do think that shows that give out an aesop that can be a little jaded have merit; I'm not here to suggest that those aesops aren't true, or that they wouldn't benefit children to know. My issue is that people seem to expect it from MLP: FiM. Every time there is an episode that crops up with a positive solution to an issue, they would rather it not be totally positive and instead have a level of cynicism to it. But MLP: FiM doesn't have that kind of tone. It's not a cynical show by nature. While it definitely does it with more nuance than other children's cartoons, it does still thrive off of rainbows and puppies and kittens, and it's been doing so since its onset. And I'm rather glad for that in MLP: FiM's case, as while family-unfriendly aesops can be very interesting to watch and thought-provoking, they also can get exhausting. At the time MLP: FiM was produced, we didn't need a super heavily nuanced girl's cartoon; we just needed a good one, and MLP: FiM fits that mold. A lot of people come to MLP: FiM for the cheery, positive tone it exudes, and it's a stress relief for them. That aspect would be taken away if the show took on a more cynical tone.

  13. Watching Grannies Gone Wild right now.

Already love the way Rainbow is depicted in this. I can totally relate to her impatience. What I find interesting is that this story usually has the character outright ditch the group due to negligence and get chewed out on it - but in this case, the group actually ditched her, which was a nice plot twist.

Also, it's nice that Rainbow's actually taking her duties seriously, enough that she's repeatedly guilting herself over it.

      Nyactis Mewcis Catlum

Oh yeah, it's completely in character for her to take it seriously, I just wasn't expecting the episode to go that route since it normally doesn't - it's making the path it's taking more unpredictable, which I like.

  19. It's so interesting how many people don't like Rainbow Dash. I mean, I get it, she's pretty abrasive and she's an athlete to boot, not a lot of people who spend a lot of time on the internet will really relate to her. It's just curious to me.

If you're reading this and you're not a big fan of her, I'm not suggesting you're wrong for not liking her, it's just a POV that I don't relate to because Rainbow is one of my favorites of the main characters.

@Sparklefan1234 But see, her "I'm awesome!" attitude is so integral to her character. Of course, it's understandable that people don't like her being a showboat - but her showboatiness is actually stemmed from insecurity, which is what makes it so interesting; most shows don't do that with that kind of disposition. Usually characters like that are portrayed with no redeeming qualities and with no basis in where that attitude stems from; MLP: FiM is unique in that we actually get hints as to why she's like that.

Rainbow's ego is extremely fragile. She doesn't showboat because she looks down on others. She showboats because she needs to be the best, or else she's not good enough in her opinion. That can especially add to the pressure she puts on herself if she sees her friends as the best too, which she is definitely showing more and more in recent episodes. For however bad one might think "Newbie Dash" is (and I personally find it pretty cringe-worthy), it says a lot about how positively Rainbow thinks about her friends that her solution to making herself look better to her idols is to mimic them.

Part of it is actual confidence, for sure, but most of it comes from a need to be noticed and admired by those around her, and if she doesn't have that recognition or admiration, then she's not worth anything. It might be a bit harder for those here on MLPF to understand because MLPF is made up of introverts, but it's basically the definition of an extrovert. Rainbow is an extrovert in its purest form; all of her motivations stem from that. She gains her confidence, her drive, her purpose for being in the way others see her and react to her.

...lol oops this may come off as a lecture. I don't mean it that way! People are free to dislike her, this is more of just me thinking because to me the "I'm awesome!" attitude is a big part to what makes her so interesting to me.

@Califorum I can't say I agree, but to be fair, her voice is kinda raspy.

@Captain Clark And isn't it interesting that a majority of those either exaggerate or roll back her character? :twi: But no, that's understandable. I actually kind of get frustrated because a lot of her centric episodes change her from the characteristics of Rainbow I like or pretends she doesn't have those characteristics at all. 28PL is the epitome of that. She tends to be best written in episodes where she's a support character, e.g. in "Top Bolt" or "Hurricane Fluttershy".

  22. The reason why "be yourself" is a bad moral is mainly because of how easily it can be misconstrued. Obviously the idea behind it is a good one - to be genuine - and I agree with that much, but the implications behind "be yourself" are generally such that you don't have to improve or change. And I also think it's unrealistic in some scenarios; it makes people think that they can get away with having their same casual attitude that they have with their friends in the workplace, or at least it'll be the first thing that they cite, but that's the thing, when you're working you're not just representing yourself, you're representing a company and that does mean suppressing parts of yourself you're free to express in more relaxed social situations. It's also not helpful when people ask you how you make friends, because it's not a specific action that you can take and if you're an antisocial jerk, you're never going to make friends that way.

It's mainly in the fact that it's too simplistic that it's a faulty moral more than anything, but it's one I've personally taken issue with for years. I've had way too many people in my life excuse their actions because they were taught to "be themselves".

    1. Nyactis Mewcis Catlum

      Nyactis Mewcis Catlum

It works for Aladdin because it makes it very clear what it means by "be yourself", which is to be genuine. As I said, that's the part of "be yourself" that I agree with. :squee: Aladdin's real self is a genuinely good person with a good heart who lives in a modest background, and what he's pretending to be is someone with a less modest background.
