I have let my cisco certs lapse - they are becoming much less in demand now the world is moving to cloud-first, and all the customers we used to have on Cisco are now on Fortigates.

I would suggest you look more into cloud networking certs rather than that specific vendor; perhaps look at infosec certs in that field too - but be aware the much vaulted "skill shortage" is largely caused by the fact nobody will give you a start without a fair few years of experience and/or certs that require years of experience as a prereq. CompTia has some good certs in the cloud and infosec areas too.

Thank you for the tip. That makes a lot of sense. Given that everything is beginning to move to cloud, that's probably here to stay. 

My brother-in-law works for Microsoft so I would like to think that before I were to try any vendor-specific certs that I could network with a few of his guys and that help me land a job. He also knows several guys who work at Dell so that might be another option. I'm also planning to hit up some job fairs after I get A+ to help make a few other connections in case I don't get any leads otherwise.

If nothing else, I guess I can always fall back on my business degree to keep having an extremely middle-class life, lol. But I'll definitely look into cloud. Again, thank you for the tip.

Microsoft would be a good call.

Cisco's VoIP is fighting a losing battle against the dominance of TEAMS as a fully integrated chat/webconferencing/telephony solution.

Microsoft's cloud, while a poor second to Amazon's, has some major advantages in a cloud-first scenario.

First it fully integrates into the O365 environment, allowing single signon to a wide range of Azure, Office and third party solutions via the Azure AD IdPs

Second, it is a one-stop-shop for certification - you can get MS certs in a wide range of areas, Cloud (and cloud security), databases, email and more. They are the dominant provider of pretty much everything in the IT industry, and you can leverage certs in one area to move laterally into others.

And thirdly, for the same reason - if you are joining a company, odds are good they are already Microsoft-first in their existing solutions; greenfield roles are rare, and usually a solid understanding of MS technologies will be a prereq for either cloud or on-premises roles.
