The Maturity Within the Fandom

The problem with this, and any fandom is the fact that you not only do you have immediate, mass communication at your disposal (the internet), but also fans that span the generations. As far as comparing the FIM fandom to others, this group is fairly level-headed, decent, and inclusive despite every individuals' differences. We all like the same thing, and are thus drawn together because of that desire for community revolving around what we all like. We are lucky in that regard.

Take the anime community. Sure, they all like anime, but because of the plethora of genres and thus tastes, the fans differ greatly from website to website as well as Con to Con. This creates a lot of friction and ensures immaturity because of competition.

Any Sports fan has their favorite teams, and even though all the fans are fans of the same sport, it can almost be outright verbal war due to the competitiveness that sports brings and the fans seem to put that competitiveness on their own shoulders.

Politics at a glance can easily be seen as a glorified fandom...We all pick our sides and at the end of the day, even though we all strive for a better place to live where ever we are, some people are brought down to 5 year old style arguing about who's right and wrong.

At the end of the day, the FIM fandom is one of the better fandoms out there because of our sense of camaraderie and community.

Yes, The MLP fandom has grown, and Yes, our numbers have increased. But like with every fandom, this will naturally happen. I'm sure that people were asking this question 4 - 5 Years ago.

Look at the Anime and Manga fandoms, EVERYONE that is internet literate is part of one of them, Yet they don't mind! We should embrace the changes. Not resist them.

Also on the matter of MLP being a mature fandom, The bronies that created the fandom, and those that keep it running we obviously mature people. We are the most tolerant, caring, intellegent, and loving fandom out there! Its the people that make us up that matter.

Our beloved fandom has it's immature people, but I believe every fandom has it. Some more than others.

You can really see who is mature and who isn't when something drastically changed within the show.

Oi I'm back.

Anyway I think the fandom still has some steam left in it sure some are immature but the world is full of them., The new generation hates to even think about taking responsibility for their actions.

But this is not about the world but the fandom I personally think the fandom is still fairly great and mature I've met nothing but creative and proactive people within this fandom and love it.

So has it passed the bar yet? Imo no.

Will it one day? Of course every fandom does.

I dont understand, you liked it better when bronies were universally hated? Or that it was better when nobody felt comfortable expressing their love for the show? That doesn't make sense, man. I get that adversity can bring about a certain kind of bond, bit I'm pretty sure it's better to be accepted and confortable with what we do. We can bond plenty in that situation too.

And besides, we're sill probably portrayed as losers.

I liked it better when nobody knew what the term Brony meant outside of our community, and a few others.

So basically you liked it better when bronydom was more of an exclusive thing. Am I really understanding you correctly?

I guess you could say *Puts on hipster glasses* I liked it before it was mainstream.

I came in at the beginning of season 2, a little before that even, but as far as I can tell the fandom hasn't really changed that much. You'll inevitably get some variety of people when you have more gathered together and that might affect things on a community level but the fandom itself won't really change.

Now, as for questioning the maturity level of the fandom...I find that discussing and questioning the maturity of anything to be a form of lacking maturity itself. We shouldn't concern ourselves with such trivial matters. But that's just me and I'm often considered the most immature person around.

When the fandom first formed, it was made up of mostly 17 to 24 year olds, but as it want on, younger fans got older and started branching out onto the Internet, so the fandom has picked up a lot of younger bronies as well. I'm not saying kids can't be mature, but they're less likely to be as mature as a college aged viewer.

I'm relatively new to the fandom, but it seems comparably more mature based upon other (however limited) fandom-related experiences I've had.  Obviously, I've not met / interacted with every single fan, but my experiences as a whole have been far better / generaly less frustrating or rage-inducing than some of the nonsense I've sampled elsewhere.  Even when I share a common interest with a group of people, I'll usually see some outright puerile and / or hateful comments made as they inevitably descend into petty bickering.  However, there are several cases on these forums already where a disagreement led to mutual understanding or at least consideration for one another's feelings and opinions.  I...  Seldom see that happen on the internet lol.

So this fandom = more mature.  More considerate.  Though I don't quite understand why this forum so often examines / rates its own fandom lol.  I wonder if other fandoms do the same thing.

What social conventions and misses are being used as the barometer for maturity? Are we talking about drama? Like Ben Affleck as Batman drama? Like rage quitting a fandom because N-Sync is rumored to be in you favorite franchise?

Watching mlp and joining the brony fandom has actually made me a more mature person. I agree there are some that do act kind of not so mature but compared with other fandoms I had been in the brony fandom is the most mature one I've joined.

It also made me more aware of the haters. In fact, I've come to realize that most conflicts in this world are developed on the basic concept of Love vs Hate.

In our fandom there is a wide range of age groups. Just like in any fandom there will always be those who seem more mature than others.

I agree. But these two things are not necessarily related.

Cool things people have said about me:

Never heard of him but I guess just you mentioning him is a good reason not to go anywhere near that name.

(In reference to an author I suggested.)

There are always going to be people in any fandom that aren't terribly mature. It's the nature of putting a bunch of different personalities together. However, I do think that this fandom as a whole is pretty mature :D

This fandom "started" on the extreamly immature side.

That said, I think its balanced out a little more now that there's a wider range of fans involved, but it still has a lot of its triple stup droolies to deal with that I doubt will ever go away.

How did the fandom start on an immature side? I don't understand where you're getting this from.

Mostly from my point of view.

The viewpoint being that for which the follys and frivolities of those who would degrade the fandom in mindless drivel for the amusement of degenerate delinquents.

Thankfully the ratio is becoming more in balance as more and more diverse individuals arrive in the fandom

I'm drifting away from it. It was never a great fandom, just a meh one. I'm starting to become highly intolerant to it.
