Well, as people have already stated the true blue reason for the lack of Male leaders in Equestria is because hasbro wants to keep to the pink isle king playset, and having male leaders would just not be as profitable. They really couldn't make a mascluin male role model and have his rainbow friendship pink tea part express sell as well to the parents of 2-7 year old girls.

 

 

And there have been male kings in Equestria's past, as in the journal of the two sisters, there was a King of Unicornia, and Commander Hurricane was a male. It could just be that the first two "ascended" alicorns of the shows era happen to be female by chance, and not by a matriarcle society. So there have been good male leaders in the history of the pony races, but other than the royal sisters and their very limted journal we have not been given any concrete history on the alicorn race. So there may have been Alicorn males in the past, and the royal duo could just be the last natural born alicorns (as their parents are never mentioned in the journal).

Really I feel as though it's just a bloodline thing. Celestia had Luna as a sister and no other (that we know of) therefore Luna was naturally going to be a Princess. Cadance was either born an Alicorn or became an Alicorn and became a Princess through that. Twilight just so happened to be a mare. I'm sure if it was a stallion that had done everything Twilight did he would be a Prince/Alicorn then.

 

By that logic if Cadance and Shining Armor were to ever have a son he'd likely be a Prince/King.

Well, the real reason is probably simply because it's directed at little girls originally, therefore princesses, they have no purpose for princes ;p.

 

Otherwise I got nothing really to go with the cannon, maybe for whatever reason males can't be Alicorns? Or maybe for some reason no male has tried to become one? Or maybe we just haven't seen one yet?

 

Maybe Starswirled became an Alicorn? idk. Just a random out of nowhere theory.

 

It may be simply because we just haven't seen any yet, maybe we'll see one.

 

Honestly a lot about Alicorns remains a mystery, so it's hard to say if there's any other reasons why a male pony cannot be an Alicorn.

Come to think of it there are some male rulers but they aren't shown or shown for a brief moment take the delegates of saddle Arabia as an example (which is the pony version of my country Saudi Arabia) has the king and queen shown for a brief moment

I assume that males can't be alicorns for whatever reason. Maybe princes have some sort of function somewhere that has not been addressed yet but we are not aware of what it is right now.

And how would you explain "males can't be alicorns" regarding Luna and Celestia's parents- which they had to have, seeing as how they were fillies at some point (says the Journal of the Two Sisters). Hm? You need a mom and a dad- as seen in the MLP world- to make babies. I highly doubt Celestia and Luna's parents weren't BOTH alicorns.

They should have referred to the Alicorn Princesses (And Princes) as Primes.
