The Stanley Parable

"This is the story of a man named Stanley. Stanley worked for a company in a big building where he was employee number 427. Employee Number 427's job was simple: he sat at his desk in room 427, and he pushed buttons on a keyboard. Orders came to him through a monitor on his desk, telling him what buttons to push, how long to push them, and in what order. This is what Employee 427 did every day of every month and every year, and although others might have considered it soul-rending, Stanley relished every moment that the orders came in, as though he had been made exactly for this job. And Stanley was happy.

And then one day, something very peculiar happened. Something that would forever change Stanley. Something he would never quite forget. He had been at his desk for nearly an hour when he realized that not one single order had arrived on the monitor for him to follow. No-one had showed up to give him instructions, call a meeting, or even say Hi. Never in all his years at the company had this happened - this complete isolation. Something was very clearly wrong. Shocked, frozen solid, Stanley found himself unable to move for the longest time. But as he came to his wits and regained his senses, he got up from his desk and stepped out of his office."

Don't judge a book by its cover. You will truly understand it if you're just willing to read it.

(sorry my quote button doesn't work) I've seen Frozen Pegasus play it and its just dumb IMO.

Watching someone play it doesn't even come close to playing it yourself for the first time, unfortunately. The best way to play is to go in not knowing anything about it and just experiencing yourself, since player choice (and/or the illusion thereof) is a big theme of the game.

That being said, there's always the chance you wouldn't have like the game anyway, some games are just not for everyone. The Stanley Parable is quite different from a lot of other games out there; I like to think of it as an interactive art piece, personally.

Yeah, that's how I see it too.

It'd be a better game to watch after you experience all the endings on your own

This is one of the BEST interactive story games I've ever played. It's up there with games like No-One Has to Die and 9 9 9.

Rarity is the best thing in my life.

Where would I be without her? Nowhere I'd like to be, that's for sure.

Sorry, but there is no way I can get the Art Ending.

For the Art Ending, you have to play the baby game for 4 hours.

I gave up after 2 and a half hours and just let the baby die.

I tried setting up a macro but that does not work because after two hours, a dog comes in and messes everything up.

I just watched the ending on Youtube.

Oh I love this game and the announcer. As far as "Walking Simulator" games go, this one set a new standard. Finding all the different story parts and endings and what you actually could do with mere walking and deciding...

My favorite ending...

... is the one where the Announcer partially snaps, you break the game and find yourself "outside" of the 2 door room, while Stanley is still in there. The Announcer is still talking to Stanley, reasoning with him. "I can wait" hit me really hard and is for me the real ending.

To me, this game was GOTY last year. I loved the pure extent of the game. Things you wouldn't even think of. There's one part of the game where you have to answer a phone, but if instead you unplug the phone, the game goes "unstable" and starts fake-crashing and going nuts. All totally planned. There was another with the Baby game where you get a new ending by actually completing it. And there's another by jumping out of a window.

The game is pretty damn meta and I love it. Even down to the README file (which you should read at some point), and the demo of the game, and even the cheat codes. Pure brilliance.
