The best idea I got for what it means is that it is one less than the denominator of a fraction (e.g. for 1/7, the maximum length is 6). If this is the definition, then this fact is indeed true! The period length of 1/103 is 34, and the maximum length from this definition is 102. 34 times 3 is 102!

 

Well, actually, I need to go and prove this isn't true for all primes smaller than 103 before I can say 103 is the smallest prime for which this occurs. But I can't be bothered.

It's confusing when the reply count != the count count

You sound like you're from Count to a Million. If it helps, the standard trick here is to realize there's 20 posts per page, so the last digit of the first number on each page will always be the same. e.g. if the first number on one page is 75, the first number on the next page will be 95, and since they both end with 5 you know there's been no counting errors.
