Could you see Big Macintosh giving Smarty Pants back to Twilight?

I could. I even see the perfect scenario. Twilight being sad over the loss of her library and Big Mac giving Smarty Pants back, saying that a piece of home is just what she needs.

That would be an interesting gesture on the behalf of Big Mac, if he ends up bringing back smarty pants to Twilight.  It would be one of those, cute awkward tender moments that I could see. It would be a very kind gesture on the behalf of Big Mac to comfort Twilight with the loss of her old home.

Plus the writers have an episode planned in S5 that will be dedicated to coming to terms with the loss of Golden Oaks Library, would be a nice element to throw in that episode

But if he did that, it would joss dozens of carefully crafted fan-fictions that take Twilight accidentally crashing into Big Macintosh as a pretext for true love!

All joking aside, I think Smarty Pants is a clever token for calling back to the beginning of Season 2, in the same way the Cake's babies or Photo Finish are.

Twimac, Twimac everywhere.

I'm loving this thread already.

Well, anything is possible, but I don't see it happening. As it stood, it was pretty much a gag and I wouldn't be surprised if it is pretty much forgotten.

I think it'd be quite awesome if he did. But he also gave smarty pants back with some new things. Where there was a notebook and quill or whatever, maybe Big Mac got a couple new things to use to play with smarty pants.

I could only see Mac giving it up if either Twi or AJ have foals of their own one day. As a sort of b-day present.

I could actually see this as a potential scene for a S5 episode given that she just lost her home full of countless memories from her childhood all the way up to recently.  Really heartfelt and sweet and SUPER TWIMAC SHIPFUEL but I could see it happening in an innocent, sweet "awwww, isn't Big Mac just such a kind, warm pony in general?" kinda way.

But I always kinda saw the fact he was genuinely in love with Smarty Pants even after the spell ended a sign of one of two things (or perhaps both) besides just being a little joke by the writhers;

A) he's representing the brony population by being an adult male that genuinely loves a little girl's toy; and/or

B) he secretly crushes on Twilight to the point at which owning one of her personal things she's had most her life like that was just overwhelmingly great to him.  Maybe he even has a Twilight shrine like Rarity's Trenderhoof one?  Nahh that'd be silly.

I honestly don't actually actively 'ship' the two or anything but I find little potential hints at such things really cute nonetheless.  If he actually did give it back to her, especially if B) isn't completely shattered as a possibility, I'd be melting at the cuteness levels there.  And I'd rather Big Mac than Flash Sentry for a few different reasons (And I don't even hate Flash or anything) but that's another story for another thread.

In "Trade ya" Twilight realized how important her books were to her. Now they're gone. Big Mac giving back Smartypants would be a touching gesture but it will take a lot more than that to ease Twilight's loss. After a loss so big, Twilight may be actually grieving as if a loved one had died. I have my own thoughts for the episode that's going to be devoted to Twilight's feelings on the loss of her library. I'd like to see all of her friends and then the ponies of Ponyville start gathering books for her. I don't think the Tree of Harmony is quite finished with it's gratitude either. Remember, there are all of those books in the castle of the sisters just sitting there, waiting to be put back into circulation.

Just a reminder that Big Mac no longer has Smarty Pants, for some reasons it's Applebloom who has it now. (As seen in Somepony to watch over me)

I think this is what the library episode is going to be about.  But, it won't be just the loss of her books that Twilight will be dealing with. Remember, Twilight LOST EVERYTHING in the explosion: all of her dresses, pictures and letters to Celestia, etc.  I think each of her friends are going to each help her recover what she had lost (Rarity and Fluttershy recreating her dresses, Pinkie Pie giving some of her pictures to Twilight, Rainbow Dash giving her Daring Do collection to Twilight and Applejack along with her family will return Smarty Pants to Twilight)

You're right. It isn't just the books. Twilight's life pretty much started when she moved to Ponyville and took up residance in the library. She lost everything dear to her. I am glad that they did show her make a single very important decision in the split second she had to act. Just as the library was about to be destroyed, Twilight teleported. This was the first time they showed a detectable period of duration between vanishing and reappearing. It wasn't just one teleport. It was two, possibly more. Twilight didn't save a keepsake or book. She literally dove into hell to find and save Owlicious. When I realized just what she did, I misted right up. My mind's eye pictures her strobing all over the library frantically searching for her feathered friend. I'm hoping for another really teary eyed moment in the new episode. In a good way, mind you!

Hey, I am hoping for the same thing.  If the writers don't show Twilight crying over the loss of the library, then something is definitely wrong here with the writing. Losing the library was like losing a family member to Twilight and she is definitely going to show her emotions here. We've seen her cry in the past, but it would be nothing like this and it would even top her brief emotional breakdown in "Princess Twilight Sparkle," when she thought that Princess Celestia was dead.

I think that there should be two tear jerking moments in the episode: when they are doing the funeral for the library and remembering the times that they had in there and when her friends, family and fellow princesses help Twilight recover what she had lost.  Think about it, Twilight had done so much for her friends, family and fellow princesses and it would be nice for all of them to do something nice for Twilight in her moment of crisis.

I also believe that M.A. Larson is going to write this episode because he did mention of writing a serious episode.  If this is going to be the one, then so be it.

Finally, I have a hunch that Celestia, Luna and Cadence are going to sing to Twilight again in the episode as a way of cheering her up and it will top "You'll Play Your Part."  The song would clarify that just because you lose something physical, the memories of it will never go away and remain in your heart forever.
