Name: Duncan Whales

Age: Somewhere around 30. He didn't keep track of it.

Country: From place to place. Up until a few years ago he's always lived on a ship.

Occupation/Class: Gunsmith and Marksman

Description:

Short brown hair kept neatly in style, as well as a very well-kept goatee, Duncan looks like someone who takes very good care of himself. Though when he sets sail he might let himself go a little, he will always at leas attempt to look decent. His eyes are light blue.

His attire is a lot messier. The loose shirt and his leather jacket look like they have been worn for years on end. A long leather belt is draped around his shoulder, leading to a strange holster in which he holds both his favourite revolver and a sabre. Around his waist there is a belt with two more holsters holding two double barrel pistols. On his back he has a large musket, a sack, and a strange-looking spotter.

Personality:

Duncan is fairly easy going when he is in normal environments. He likes having some brandy with a few friends. He likes chatting up with random strangers and meeting new people. He loves telling stories, and loves listening to them even more. He tries to watch every single sunset, and smiles whenever he sets sails. A kind, friendly person.

Once his environment isn't as friendly as an inn or pub, he will change his attitude significantly. He won't trust anyone as quickly, and he will make sure that everyone knows he means business. He isn't quick to judge, but once he does dislike someone it is almost impossible to change his perception of your actions. He is very perceptive of his environment, and quickly picks up signals that show someones intentions.

Once he is given a task, he is very determined. Up to the point that if anyone opposes his goal, he will violently dispatch of them when he deems it nescesary. When it comes to his profession, which is a spotter, a marksman and a gunsmith, he is very professional and serious about it. He makes sure you know that he is one of the best at what he does.

Duncan has an adventurous spirit. He has spent a lot of time travelling, and that made him thirsty for more. He will take on pretty much any job if he trusts the crew, get paid decently and can act out his profession.

Weapon/Equipment:

He has a large sack of equipment which he takes along once he goes on long trips. They include all sorts of things, such as:

- A gusmithing kit, including a small rune-imbued ring that can melt metal over a prolonged period of time so he can manipulate it.

- Sack of special alchemical gunpowder. It can be infused with magic to enchant the bullets it fires. Enough for about 30 shots (very expensive stuff).

- A large musket with a long barrel and a lot of modification slots, for things suchs as scopes, standards, barrel extenders, stabilisers and more. This gun was modified by Duncan himself, and is accurate to a longer range than most muskets.

- A scope and an improvised silencer for his musket. It doesn't silence the shot entirely, but enough to reduce the sound enough to get lost in the raging of the sea.

- A few trivial things that I he might need on the ship. Nothing too specific though (stuff like soap and such.)

On him most of the time he carries:

- A large sabre which he can handle very proficiently, but not expertly

- Two double-barrel pistols, handcrafted by the Voctare traders. Very high quality, very expensive (they look expensive too!)

- A revolver. A revolutionary gun that can be reloaded rather easily and can hold four large caliber bullets at once (actual bullets, not just metal balls. These have to be made specificly for this gun). Top notch, designed and built by duncan himself. The revolver technlogy is so new that only a few of them are in use as of now. It can misfire sometimes, resulting in an explosion right into the users own face. It also has flashy decorations and gold plating on the metal parts, and the name 'the wrench' inscribed on it.

- Compass and two different spotter scopes, one for horizon-like distances and one for shorter ones.

Powers(if any):

Eagle eyes:

Duncan is very perceptive. He sees a lot of things that others wouldn't see. In the distance as well as close by he will pick up a lot of things unonsciously, and when he focuses it is next to impossible to escape his gaze.

Sea-aim:

Duncan has learned to fire weaponry from the rocky surface of a boat. Practicing in tough environments had made him one of the most accurate marksmen you'll meet on the sea. However, when he is on land it will take a while for him to adjust his aim, since he is accounting for movement and wind that's not there.

Thought I might as well add his weakness to this list:

Gunpowder crazed:

Duncan will always find an excuse to fire his weapon at someone or something. If he can't distract himself by working on some kind of gun or doing some kind of intense job, he will get terribly nervous. Up to the point that it distracts him very badly. He will start shooting birds out of the sky, or throwing objects into the air and shooting them down if he has the chance. Sometimes this need for gunfire frustrates the people around him.

And his most strange feat:

Dead shot:

Sometimes, Duncan will take a shot that seems impossible. Either it is in a tiny moment of possibility with a flick of his wrist, or at a distance and difficulty that cannot be accounted for in a shot. If this is a magical feat or a supernatural ability, Duncan doesn't know yet, but his heartbeat will stop, time will slow down and he will have perfect control over his body for a while. In that moment, he hits any shot he takes. If the shot is enough, that he cannot control, but he always hits his target. After this feat of exceptional skill he will drop down in mental exhaustion immediately.

Bio:

Duncan was born on a ship, and if he has anything to say about it he will die on one. His mother was a travelling merchant, and his father a sailing trader. His mother took a long trip on his fathers ship, travelling to a land far away, they had a lovely night together and he was conceived. At first, his parents thought of him as a nuisance, as his birth hadn't been intended, but once he had been placed on the world, his father's heart grew to love him. His mother however, departed after his third birthday, leaving his father to raise him on his own. Most of the crew were kind enough not to mind him, but his life wasn't the easiest growing up on a ship. And even though his father tried to give him all he could, he wouldn't leave the seas for his son.

So in his years of growing up Duncan did not only grow up to love his father, but also the sea. It was his home more than the ship was. He felt more at ease with a moving deck beneath his feet than the solid ground of land. He turned into an excellent sailor, and also learned the knacks of trading and negotiation.

From a young age Duncan enjoyed tinkering with little things. His father used to bring home small leftover construction pieces which he would then turn into tiny contraptions with no particular use. Eventually, his father changed course to start trading in guns. Duncan particulary enjoyed this part of his life. Not only because guns were the epitome of engineering in his eyes, but because Duncan's father hired a gunsmith on board to provide advice and new designs as they travelled their trading route. Duncan befriended the man quickly, and the gunsmith started to explain and eventually teach his profession to the young boy. If he didn't spend his time with the gunsmith, he would spend it up in the crow's nest, looking out for other ships, dangerous waters and perhaps even pirates.

Not long after that Duncan learned how to use guns as well. Laughter would sound whenever he fired his own pistol and knocked himself over. Time and time again his self-made little firearms wouldn't propel a bullet fast enough to puncture skin! But over the years, the laughter faded. Eventually, it turned into applause and shouts of amazement as Duncan's weaponry improved.

When he reached an age of about twenty, Duncan departed along with his mentor, and left this father with the promise of returning to him one day. There would always be one place where he could find his father. During the summer once every four years, in the town their ship was constructed in.

Duncan travelled to a gunsmith's guild in the big town, fabricating a few new designs, but mostly constantly the same weapon. At first Duncan was excited about this new job, being thaught the expertises of his profession while at the same time teaching the younger ones himself. Becoming one of the best at his crafts as well as how to use them. But later he felt like a machine. Day after day he manufactured the same weapons. His new designs were usually either denied, or stolen by the more 'experienced' gunsmiths. He became really fast at making, maintainging and repairing guns. He understood the way they worked, and he understood the way they were used, but what he couldn't do was turn his passion into a curse. That is why he left the guild to become a trader once again.

However, this didn't go as well as he hoped. The guild wouldn't let him go as easily, as they had thaught him the secrets of gunsmithing. He almost had to fight his way out, and definately didn't leave in good spirit. Only his true friend waved him goodbye as he went for the docks. More bad luck struck as he couldn't find a job at the trading company called Voctare, which specialised in fireweapons, since they were partners with the gunsmithing guild.

He then used his last coins to take a ship to the nearest large city there was, hoping to find  a job there.

Allegiance: To whoever he feels he can trust most. Duncan is a follower, not a leader. He cares for gold, but cares more for adventure and friendship, though most of all he wants to be able to act out his profession in peace.

This character would do good as a spotter in the crow's nest, ABS and gunner.

How would you walk, how would you talk if you thought: "Three percent of the population likes classical music, if only we could get it up to four percent we'd be back in business and all our problems would be over." How would you walk, how would you talk if you thought: "Everybody loves classical music! They just haven't found out about it yet!" It's an entirely different world. It's what you make of it that counts.

I found an easy way to find out if you've inspired someone. If their eyes are shining, you know you're doing it!

@@Scribblegroove,

Accepted for all three. I'm sure someone would offer to show him how to use the cannons properly, if not the Captain. It just so happens that she has a defective gattling gun on the bow of her ship that she cant seem to fix herself.

I suppose this gatling is very new and improvisational. I assumed guns weren't very developed in this RP, just a little more advanced than Pirates of the Caribbean. It will definitely give Duncan something fun to tinker on though :D

Looking forward to this RP

Think of it as a prototype one of the firsts of its line, so its of a new design but old compared to the rest

The reason why Blake's asking is because he actually needs a general layout of the ship before he can be competent moving around on it.

Just wanted to point out that I do really like this plan, but Anne is supposed to be a stick in the mud and a pain in the ass so she'll point out any flaws she thinks of and be real negative most of the time.
