I think people should try all of the comics especially considering there are a lot of them with mixed reception.

The only ones I say they should avoid are the RD Micro and FF#1

I Well, I got most of them from last year. Got the main series up to the Reflections arc except the first one of Big Mac and I only read the CMC, Cely, Spikey Wikey and Twily's out of the micro series, I also got the Friends Forever 1. The quality is surprissingly good, and while it has many cliches, they give a more mature feeling to out favorite equines. I enjoyed most of them, While some arcs are not as good as others, like Reflections arc and Nightmare Rarity, they are good enough to recommend in my book. The ones I didn't enjoy though are Spikey Wikey's micro, and Friends Forevah 1#, those are the only ones I consider bad so far

I've read up to vol.3 of the mane series now and have to say that overall I think the comics have been great. I don't think Nightmare Rarity arc was quite as good as the return of Queen Chrysalis, a bit mediocre, but I wouldn't say it was bad. Best thing so far has definitely been the Big Mac story. Absolutely loved everything about it, how he had so many mares fighting over his affections without even knowing it! He is quite the studly stallion. Not keen though, on the first issue from vol.4 (the pirate story) so far. Don't like how Fluttershy is being portrayed, I honestly don't think she'd go as far as deciding to become a pirate and basically stalking an animal that she couldn't bear to part with. It seems to be taking her love for animals too extreme and I honestly think she'd still be too scared to go pirating. In all honesty, I don't think anyone has been portrayed well in that issue, Pinkie Pie seems quite "off" in it and Dash is less cool and more grating.

Absolute brilliance.

The Big Mac, Shining Armour and Cadence arcs were surprisingly strong. Till this day I secretly harbour the hope that they will use one of the storylines of any of the comics as a plot point.

Finished the Reflections arc now. Very good overall, but found the ending a bit weak, would've preferred if they'd went with the

Celestia being sealed away for a while in sacrifice. Would've been an interesting turn of events seeing Twilight handle more duties and it then gives you the arc for bringing Celestia back, which could've still ended with alternate Sombra turning villain because he'd be so consumed to do anything to bring her back

I think Katie Cook is the best of the writers so far, she gets really great big stories out of them, with lots of intrigue and humour too. She handles Twilight and Pinkie well and always tries to give Spike something, but I'm really disappointed at how she treats Fluttershy. She barely has anything to do most of the time and is kinda just in the background, and not in the "she's shy" kinda way! I don't think she knows how to write her, which is a shame because Fluttershy is my 2nd favourite pony, who's capable of having really great moments when handled properly.

I've purchased four volumes of the "Friendship is Magic" comics, one volume of "Pony Tales," and no volumes of "Friends Forever" because I'm waiting for the release of the volume that includes an issue pairing Rainbow Dash with Trixie lol.  I've only read two of my FIM volumes (amounting, I think, to eight issues total), and I enjoyed both.  I thought much of the dialogue was humorous and / or fit the characters speaking it, I find the art appealing, and pop culture references seem more frequent (and perhaps more blatant) than in the show.  I'm not thoroughly analyzing the story because I'm just looking for something that's entertaining and serves as a companion to the show (particularly during dry spells between seasons).  The FIM comics satisfy those criteria.

I have mixed feelings about "Pony Tails," as it is a mixed bag.  Different artists and - I presume - different writers for different characters' stories.  Not a tremendous amount of interaction between members of the Mane Six (that I've seen), as the focal point of each issue is largely the one Mane Six pony.  I haven't even read all the way through my one Pony Tails volume lol; I read Twi's and Rainbow Dash's respective stories and just haven't felt like continuing. xD  And I'm not a lazy reader; I devour manga when I have a new volume in my hands.  Guess I simply prefer the comparably balanced and consistent look / feel of the FIM comics.

Again, likely not buying a volume of "Friends Forever" unless there's a Rainbow Dash pairing in there someplace.  I tried to find the individual issue for purchase online, but have had no luck as of yet.  I do, in theory, like the concept behind Friends Forever.  Two (sometimes more) characters are paired together per issue, and it's not always a likely or predictable pairing.  Fluttershy and Zecora, Luna and Pinkie Pie, the aforementioned Rainbow Dash and Trixie pairing...  Stuff like that.  Could be interesting.  Idunno yet. xD

You can get individual issues on Comixology

If you're okay with reading digitally

Using that, I read on my tablet

Its become something of a habit.

I'm weird and like owning physical copies of the comics lol.  I have a big, stupid tub o' manga (and some pony comics) in my room that proves this. xD  Maybe if I had a Kindle or something similar I'd feel differently about it.  Thanks for the info, all the same.

DARNIT, I didn't know this. xD

Day of rhyming?  Certain bliss!

Too late to start now, methinks.

This turn of events...  It stinks.

The MLP comics are absolutely amazing! They've been around since November 2012 so if you haven't given them a read yet, to that I say "what are you waiting for"?

The art style is gorgeous and the humor is witty and fits in with the style of the show.

The comics so far have had 3 "series" if you will. There's the main comic series (23 issues as of this post), the Micro-series (one off stories that focus on the adventures of 1 character [10 issues in total]), and the Friends Forever series (same as the micro-series except focuses on 2 characters rather than 1[9 issues as of Sep 2014]). There was also a special Annual 2013 one off comic to flesh out the events that happened prior to the 1st Equestria Girls movie.

Of course i'd recommend that you read them all, but if money is an issue and you can only focus on 1 series, then I recommend you purchase and follow the main series. The comics are great for adding to the already established world that the show has provided us.

As it happens, those are generally considered (especially Rainbow's) two of the worst micro-series editions. The third one, Rarity's, is much better, and the fifth one, Pinkie Pie's, is even better still. The ones for Celestia and Luna (in the second volume) are also pretty good. Unfortunately, the rest aren't as good (though in my opinion only Rainbow's and Fluttershy's are outright bad; the rest are merely mediocre at worst). It was a very mixed-bag series, sadly.

Friends Forever is much more consistently decent, fortunately.

Well that's good to hear.  I plan to snag the second volume when it releases later this year (that's the one that will include the RD and Trixie issue, if I'm not mistaken).

I read them on my smart phone, I would pick them up if they where in a local comic book shop but they don't sell them in my Country so I don't buy them save with the dvds and a tonne of other merch. On the upside cash saved I guess.
