movies/tv Why is Attack on Titan so popular? (warning contains alot of spoilers)

I DO agree that it is a good anime. I don't deny that. But my question is why exactly do people talk about it and obsess about it so much? Again I DO think it's a good anime but why do people hype it up so much like it's the next DragonBall Z, Naruto or One Piece?

So many story arcs and character developments end up going nowhere mounted throughout the series inevitably never to be answered. What the hell was the colossal titan? What happens between Eren and Mikasa? What happens to Annie? What was up with that fusion at the end? Why did Annie put Eren in her mouth instead of killing him? Was she bringing him to the titan in the mountains? And, for that matter, what is that titan in the mountains?

And how come after the episode where Eren was eaten by a titan they show him ok like nothing ever happened and then in the next episode suddenly he had to kill what appeared to just be some rogue humans and then in the next episode after that they all think he's dead and we just now learn of his titan form? Was that just a filler or something?

I've only watched the first + second episodes of Attack on Titan, and it's good because it has so many unanswered questions. You want to know these answers, and that's why to keep on watching. It has a great storyline, pretty cool characters, and i'll say it; it's better than DBZ and Naruto. Obviously not as good as PMMM, but still, fantastic.

 

Perhaps it just isn't your thing.

It's not Dragon Ball level, that's for sure.

 

I don't know what's so special about it, seems like a very simple concept with good animation and not-so-good enemies.

Read the manga, there are tons of clarifications. Bertold is the Collosal Titan, Reiner is the Armored Titan, they're working with Annie, Eren has Titan swarming powers, there's a 4th Titan Shifter in Ymir, there's an ape titan, Eren gets kidnapped every two seconds, etc.

 

But yeah, I don't particularily understand the popularity either. The theme song is bitching though and Eren vs Annie was awesome

I think the combination of the story of anime being so refreshingly original, the interesting characters and the high quality of animation is what makes it a great anime.

But what tops it all off is the layer of mystery shrouding it all, hell your questions even confirm that. The amount of conspiracy and fan theory is so huge it becomes exciting to guess the reasoning behind everything such as why the titans attack humanity.

If you have read the manga some of the questions you ask can be answered.

 

I have answered why AoT is a good anime, but I can't fully answer why it is so popular. I suppose the actual story and overall theme of the anime was so cool that it just spread like wildfire in the anime community until eventually just about everyone and their mother had heard about it, and naturally wanted to take a look to see what all the fuss is about.

Which is rather similar to a certain show about pastel colored ponies.

 

To answer some of your questions I will put a spoiler tag incase some people dont want to see it (or if you dont want to see it)

 

"What the hell was the colossal titan?"

The colossal titan is another titan shifter, same as eren and annie, but I wont reveal who it is.

"What happens between Eren and Mikasa?"

Nothing really, they are family 0_o

"What happens to Annie?"

 

Well, as far as we know she is encased in that crystal thing and ain't coming out

 

"What was up with that fusion at the end?"

No clue, hell the manga didn't even do that whole fusion thing, it was actually pretty chill.

"Why did Annie put Eren in her mouth instead of killing him?"

She wanted to capture him and take him to other titan shifters, he is revealed to hold a power that the titan shifters desperately dont want eren to have.

The anime was an amazing piece of art (Fighting against Titans and such), and the backstory is really elaborate Just one more year, hopefully, until Season Two. Best to be caught up in the manga as well

Probably because it's pretty easy to get into. With the popularity of darker dramas these days seeing as such in anime form appeals to a lot of people I imagine(it's part of the appeal for me anyway). The show introduces a lot of elements that keep people guessing as well, which is always something but with the lack of a second season so far those of us who only watch the anime are gonna be left guessing for a while(hopefully only till next year plox). The animation, art style, and soundtrack are also very good. Plus there's Mikasa, how can anyone not love Mikasa I mean come on

That said though, I'm surprised more people aren't turned off by the generally dull characters aside from a few and the excessive monologuing and exposition(not to mention that the dub isn't great), but I digress. It's a great show to get more into anime with at least.

A lot of unanswered questions are because they'll likely be answered in later seasons. 

 

We finished up the first season, and I was like "omg that was freaging epic. But they never got Eren to the basement he needed to return to, to unlock his secret". 

 

Then is dawned on me at the time (spring), there's a second season coming out~ and I do believe all unanswered questions will be answered in the later episodes. It's nice to have an intriguing plot that keeps you guessing~

 

For me, I'm an avid fan because I was really able to get into the characters. Because of how they were portrayed, I got into the emotion and the motions of the story. 

 

The whole concept was new and refreshing, and it left me with that amazing feeling of "whoa that was so bad-ass". 

 

First few episodes it's like "eh... this is kinda gory and gross... not sure what's going on with all of this" but once there was a turn of events after the first town raid of the Titans and Eren's team had to fight, I was totally clicked into the following the whole series.
