They should have a maximum of a $50 dollar markup for being prebuilt, not a $200+ dollar markup. Or else they're just not worth it.
Gotta have those absurdly high profit margins bro.

The only benefit of a "steambox" I see is that the Steam OS supposedly runs games at higher frame rates than on Windows due to optimization. But couldn't you put Steam OS on any old PC?

Yeah. They're basically for people who want a PC but don't want to build one. The only problem is, with a lot of these you can get a much better PC for around the same price.

With that sort of hard drive and processor? Good question....

Intel core series(i3,i5,i7,) desktop, no idea about the HDD.

500GB, 1TB or 2TB, depending on the processor config. Motherboard uses a standard LGA1150 socket, but has an integrated GPU, uses SODIMM RAM modules and the cooling only seems to be designed for 35W processors so I wouldn't bother to try putting an 84W one like a 4460 or 4770K or an 88W one like a 4690K or 4790K in there. Not like you'd be able to really get good overclocks too, I doubt the board was designed for it and the BIOS is probably locked down to prevent it.

Well it stated '6 GB per second' 500 GB SATA drive, which I am assuming is a 7200 RPM disk. One would need a tad bit faster write speed to keep up with today's demanding games.

7200RPM is enough really, unless you want wicked fast load times. Then an SSD is a necessity.

It's a 2.5" mech drive, yeahhhhhhh that's quite a bit slower than a 3.5" 7200RPM mech drive.

Are 10,000 RPM and up HDDs worth it? Is there a point to spending money on those?

EDIT: Nvm, they aren't. Almost $300 for 600GB? No thank you.

So apparently my laptop can't even handle flash/HTML5 based browser games, because the whole system just shut down abruptly while I was playing one.

Sigh.

SSDs have rendered these VelociRaptors extinct.

That, and a modern ultra high capacity/density drive will probably outclass them in sequential transfers -- which is probably what you'd use a drive like that for anyway.

Allow me to introduce you guys to the worst computer ever made, the new Macbook. Very thin, very light, next to no I/O. Because, y'know, a computer doesn't need I/O right?

Apple has always been HORRIBLE when it comes to mac-books actually being practical. No optical drives, tiny SSDs(I've seen as low as 128GB in a stock one),  lack of ports for external devices...

I still can't see any point to the Steam Machines because I'd have a separate PC for day-to-day anyway, and why not just combine the money I'd spent on both and have one higher-end gaming rig?

I guess maybe it might be good people people that want to massive library and sales available from steam along with the simplicity of a console, but that's about it.

Unless you have a lot of CDs/DVDs, it can be argued that having no optical drives on a computer is practical in order to save space or the fact that it may not be necessary, optical media as a whole is becoming obsolete anyway.

But I agree with you, why only one USB port, hey Apple, people still use USB devices, I'm not sure if you know that.

Most people DO still have tons of CDs/DVDs and burners are also a great way to make physical back-ups that are more stable than a actual portable HDD/SDD.

Apple: introducing the iPhone 7! We made it even thinner, so the battery will last 2 hours max, and so fragile you could snap it in half.

We also barely upgraded the specs, too! So a dual core CPU and an 8MP camera.

One of my friends (who's a pretty huge Apple fan) complained about the lack of I/O too. So then I created this analogy:

It's like the DLC nonsense going on right now, it's more profitable to rip out content (I/O) and then sell it to you, the end user, as additional content (adapters).

The iPhone 6 has a dual core CPU and an 8 MP camera, and a screen res of 720p. You know what else has those specs? The galaxy s3. That's a phone from 2012.

A phone from 2012 that you can literally get for $50 on contract from some carriers. I literally paid $50 for my Galaxy S3.

I might also add that it has a bigger screen as well and comes with the memory card slot that Iphones still lack.

This is why Apple is loosing the smart phone market faster than CDs are losing the music market.

Android is cheaper, has more options, tends to come on better hardware for the money and isn't locked down tighter than Alcatraz.
