gaming Shadow of Mordor Discussion

So after playing the massively annoying Destiny, I took it back and decided to rent Shadow of Mordor for the One. Needless to say, this game is pretty friggin' awesome. The graphics and detail are superb and the depth in the captain system is a very nice feature. Plus, the combat, which is of course inspired by Assassins Creed and the Arkham Games but that isn't a bad thing obviously.

Anyone else played it yet? It definitely deserves a look. :)

I'm gonna have to wait until a sale to get this game now, which sucks because I really want it now. I'm not a huge Lord of the Rings fan, but... damn, this game looks amazing.

It takes the best of AC and the Batman games and coats it in LOTR flavouring. Definitely a great game with plenty of content to occupy you. Id say its a must buy because at the very least, its an efficient time waster.

6 Go of VRAM to play it on highest setting. Only graphics card to have that much VRAM are the TITAN series ( £1000 minimum).

The devs did a VERY bad job  on this game and I am not going to buy it for this only reason.

Unless I go insane and decide to buy a TITAN just so that I can play this game on highest setting, which, knowing me, could well happen.

A shame really, because it did look like a good game.

According to Steam reviews, the game is actually very well-optimized. Also, there are 6GB GTX 780s and 780 Tis, and I can remember there being rumors of 8GB GTX 980s.

The 6GB VRAM requirement is only if you want to run it on ultra. Lower settings, such as medium or high, are fine on 2GB (medium) and 4GB (high).

Let us just hope they exaggerated. After all, no other games on this planet requires that much.

Perhaps devs should work on making games require more cores first. Maybe give Intel an excuse to bring hexa- and octacore processors to the mainstream market too.

This game was actually a pleasant surprise as it kind of came out of nowhere and ended up being really entertaining. It's pretty much Orc Murder Sim 2014, and this is something I personally needed without ever realizing it.

My one issue is the uruk captain trait generator can sometimes give you literally unkillable foes. I have one war-chief that after branding all five of his bodyguards and turning them and their troops against him, as well as releasing several caragors, this clown was the only one standing. Currently my game is at a point where all other captains and war-chiefs have been killed by this god amongst orcs. The game calls him Ishmoz the Slippery, but everyone else calls him The Juggernaut.

Oh, right. Before he became war-chief, he took down a graug. Alone.

It looks like a hell of a lot of fun. LOTR: Arkham Asylum! I'm not a big fan of LOTR but the game mechanics look pretty awesome and 6 GB of VRAM? I'll give it two and it'll like it.

Or I'll drop the settings.

Meh.

The game seems to take the best parts of the Arkham games and the Assassins Creed games and mashes them in a blender of awesomeness. This truly is a sleeper hit of this year for me. The nemesis and captain systems alone are very well done too. Really, this game deserves the sales of Destiny and more.

The captain hunting mechanic was one of the big things that drew me into the game. I thought that was the coolest thing, though it does seem like the more you suck at the game the more powerful/highly ranked the captains get. Every single one of them will be promoted elite warchiefs in my game, no doubt.

It also managed to crash my Crysis-stable OC. Impressive.

It is crazy how that works though, it makes death have a real and satisfying purpose in the game. Plus, when you eventually slay a war chief, one that has troubled you for a long time, it's like this feeling of extreme superiority. >:3 Rarely has a game ever made me go 'Oh, I died, wonder what cool stuff will happen now! :D' That's something special.

The game has brilliant mechanics that are ridiculously repetitive, which all balances out to make it an easy 8/10 in my opinion.

But considering how many ways they messed with the lore and overall feel of the universe here, I just hope that this isn't the future of LotR; getting diced up by multiple companies and retrofitted into all these different little projects that all feel like they came from completely different original sources. So honestly, I would feel much more comfortable about the game if it had been set in a completely original universe. For instance, we travel to Norway in the time of the Vikings, and a portal to the underworld has opened and all these Dokkalfar or Jotunns or something appear and attack the Jarls en masse. So we're playing exactly the same game, with exactly the same plot, just with Vikings and their gods. And if they'd done that, the whole undying thing might have actually made more sense.

Also, the protagonist basically has superpowers. That just doesn't feel very Tolkien to me.

I am planning to get this game in future as I am huge LOTR fan, but at the same time I am kinda afraid of buying it after overwhelmingly average War in the north. Is this game better than that one, or are we dealing with yet another cashgrab with decent graphics? How's the difficulty level? Is it bugged or is this one well made and worth the money?

And on top of all - what is the story like? I saw trailers, but trailers always show the best game has to offer and skip its flaws. If anyone is capable of doing that - I'd be happy to hear what flaws it has if any.

Though I just purchased / downloaded SoM and haven't played much, I already know I'm going to enjoy the hell out of it.  Having played through three Batman Arkham titles and a couple Assassin's Creeds, much of the game play feels familiar.  BUT I already think it has an edge on AC so far as stealth is concerned, the dynamic combat is seemingly more forgiving than that of the Arkham games, and I'm cutting down butt-ugly Middle-Earth baddies.  Fun-a-fun-fun.
