Spike needs a dragon friend.

Lets not beat around the bush. Spike is sad and lonely. Poor kid is in a world full of ponies as the only dragon living among them. Normal dragons are just plain jerks too so he is just kinda stuck trying to get ponies attention and live like he is one.

 

Thats why he needs a dragon friend. Someone who could be a buddy like the cmc has. it could be a girl or a boy, I don't care. Im not even saying like a love interest, he just needs a friend he can really relate to. Someone like him but different enough to have that banter and conflict. And not a one dimensional jerk or just a pawn for relationship stuff like flash, like an actual character.

 

Am I wrong? Does he just need to shush and play along with ponies and never get to explore that dragon side of him? Would you like to see this?

well, the world isn't full of only ponies; it's just the wrong country/ territory he's stuck in. there's griffons, other dragons, zebras, and Luna knows what else outside of Equestria.

Maybe Spike could ask Celestia to try and contact whatever parents or family he might have, and maybe we might see one of those family members show up (fingers crossed for Whimsey Weatherbe as Spike's mom/ sister/ aunt/ cousin)

I was using world in more thematic sense than a literal one but yes other races are outside as well as inside Equestria. Spikes "world" is twilight and ponyville. As for his family, I do not think they are around considering Celestia had his egg. The way she gives Spike to twilight and the fact his firebreath is connected to Celestia I would say he was basically born into servitude. Makes me wonder how that happened.

 

Regardless having another dragon in a similar situation would help him explore this.

I don't think the dragons that we've seen are necessarily bad or evil though.

 

For example, the dragon in "Dragonshy" clearly wasn't evil, he was just ill-mannered and didn't know any better.

 

I think that's what happened with the teenage dragons as well. They don't know any other way to behave, so they behave like miscreants.

 

If they did meet good dragons, they would just be a separate society of dragons who have learned to be nicer rather than be brutish and thuggish like the dragons the Mane Six and Spike have met so far.

I don't think he necessarily needs a dragon, but I do think he needs to have some friends his own age.  Maybe even Snips and Snails.  He's a lot more mature than them, though.  But I do think he should have a chance to be a kid once in a while.

Although, I do wonder: if the test Twilight had to take to hatch the egg was given to everypony else who was trying to get into magic school then surely she couldn't have been the only one to successfully do it? There had to be others with other eggs who came before and after her, right? She couldn't have been the only one to ever do it, surely somepony, even years before her could have done it too.

 

Maybe instead of another dragon Spike could get a Griffin as a buddy. We've seen very little of the Griffins other than Gilda and Gustav, so a semi re-occurring supporting Griffin character could help to build that race and the world up a little.

The thing is Griffins seem to hold equal status to Ponies while Spike was born being Twilights "assistant." so he would have the same problem relating to a griffin as he does ponies

 

Someone in a similar role as him would be on his level, he could relate with someone who is sort of below ponies in a way. It doesn't need to be a dragon, but that would help him explore that aspect of his character if they were.

 

I wonder if Familiars are in greek mythology, that would sort of be an interesting character type Spike could befriend.

Not really. Its been established that he doesn't need to be friends with jerks but he still has a lot of issues that could only be adressed by having another dragon to interact with; Like how a dragon with a generous personality is supppsed to grow when his body only develops when he practices greed.

Well, he learned that what he is isn't the same as who he is. What's important is all the good things that accompany friendship and because of that, he is just as comfortable among ponies as he would be with dragons if he had chosen a different path. Maybe the friendship he has makes him far different than any other dragon and therefore unique.

Well I mean in dragon quest he did explore his dragon side.

 

It just turned out that dragons are pretty much jerks. And at the end of the episode he was content with living amongst ponies.
