Carnivore references in MLP

Recommended Posts

We all know that Equestria is a vegan society because horses are, but I've noticed some carnivore references in MLP, like these:

- They use eggs for cakes and the frost

- In a scene of "The Last Roundup" Pinkie said in the Latin dub that bacon goes well with beans

- Applejack added worms to Pinkie's cupcakes and despite she saw it as gross she was never shocked about eating animals

Do you remind any other?

Okay, this one's not about a pony eating another lifeform than a plant, but ...

... about feeding other lifeforms than plants with other lifeforms than plants ... Ugh, awful wording on my part.

Circle of life, I'd say.

So ...

I do not have any other examples. However, I know one thing, Fluttershy would be horrified.

You sure about that? ;)

Fluttershy is actually the most cool with animals eating each other as not only did she fed worms to birds and other creatures, and fish to ferrets as StatestheOblivious pointed out but in the Return of Queen Chrysalis Arc, while her friends were freaking out in horror over the carnage of the animals murdering each other in the background, Fluttershy looked on with almost a glee like look and remarked 'Nature is so fascinating'.

What about...you all know the scene...I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet...twilight sure like her burgers...

I'm pretty sure they were referred to as "hayburgers" ... How does one grill hay anyway?

Anyhow, I remembered this one:

My horrifying headcanon is that since the ecosystem in Equestria does not occur naturally, that it falls to Fluttershy to choose which animals will live and which will be eaten by other animals. The tremendous amount of stress and pressure put on her by this leaves her traumatized, and that's why she is so shy.

This also means that the bunny census she was taking in "Applebuck Season" was so that she would know how many baby bunnies to cull.

Anyhow, as a vegetarian myself I'm always a bit more conscious of when a character is eating meat. (I'm not silently judging all of you... very much...) And what I've seen is that they seem to have been more consistent about the ponies being vegetarian as the series goes on. They even retconned Pinkie Pie's statement about "hot dogs" in "Fall Weather Friends" by showing us in "Rarity Takes Manehattan" that an Equestrian hot-dog is a carrot in a bun.

It even has been bleeding over into the Equestria Girls universe because while in the first movie you see characters having hamburgers for lunch, in the second movie the cafeteria food is more overtly meat free. Even the tacos for "Taco Tuesday" seem to just be mostly lettuce and pico de gallo in a taco shell.

What about...you all know the scene...I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet...twilight sure like her burgers...

Those are pretty clearly not normal hamburgers though. In the place of a hamburger patty they have a big wad of hay.

True vegans don't eat cheese. Or at least not cheese made with milk.

There are different kinds of vegetarians besides vegans though:

Vegan: no animal products whatsoever

Ovo/Lacto vegetarian: will eat eggs and dairy products

Pescatarian: will eat fish

Ok, what about gelatin?

10668__safe_rainbow-dash_animated_bed_fo

Can it be made from anything besides fat?

It's not made from fat. It's a by-product extracted from skin and bones. Which still makes it an animal product. But it's not fat!

It's actually made of grinded bones, and about an alternative the only vegetable I know that has collagen is the parsley, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't taste good in a gelatin.

It seems there are ways to fake it:

Ok, I thought I heard it was fat...excuse my ignorance, well, I'm out of stuff for now, maybe we can find something in the background of one of the market scenes...who knows

The ponies don't seem strictly vegan, as they've been seen to eat eggs and drink milk (and milkshakes) and eat cheese. They even seem to have cows around specifically for the purpose, if Boast Busters is any indication. I'm guessing the pink stuff in Applejack's sandwich was some sort of savory vegetable loaf just to make sandwiches a little more substantial than a load of veggies on bread.

Are we talking about the ponies being carnivorous or just carnivores in general for the MLP universe? Because there's plenty of carnivores in the MLPverse. Heck the ponies hang out with them everyday: Winona, Opal, Owlilicious & Gummy. I doubt they can survive off of vegan diets like the ponies.

That's something that has always confused me about "Owls Well That Ends Well" is that Spike thought Twilight would be mad at Aloysius for killing a mouse. Isn't that something that would be expected from an owl?

Now that I think about it, the ponies have been pretty lucky that on their pet play dates Aloysius hasn't carried off Angel and eaten him.

Speaking of which, how the hell did the hub get away with obviously showing blood?
