I feel like I'm not dedicated enough...

I feel like I don't have the right to call myself a fan or something.

I mean, for the past week I noticed that I never actually did anything pony related in my free time. I don't actively engage in fan activities and only just watch the episodes. I actually keep forgetting to go here, and... well yeah you get my point.

I know within inside me that I really, really like MLP:FiM, but apparently it's not penetrating me enough in that I don't actually prioritize it high enough in my free-time time. It makes me wonder whether I deserve to actually be called a fan or not... I feel so pathetic :/

You should NEVER feel obligated to dedicate yourself to something just because you like it or feel like you don't belong. If you are a fan, you are a fan. Its really all there is to say. There's no need to feel bad. When being a fan of something begins interfering with your life or getting in your way, then you should start to worry, but this isn't the case, so don't fret. :)

I feel like Pinkie Pie's letter at the end of the Cranky Doodle Donkey episode sums this up quite well

"There are many different kinds of friends and many ways to express friendship some friends like to run and laugh and play together but others just like to be left alone and that's fine too, but the best thing about friendship is being able to make your friends smile."

There are all different kinds of MLP fans, some of them trawl forums or write fanfics or go to conventions, but others just enjoy the show and maybe sometimes see what's up in the community and that's fine too, it's about what you enjoy and what makes you smile but never feel obligated to prove how much of a fan you are based on how much time you spend doing show related things, it's like spicydetective said "if you like MLP:fim then you are a fan".

I actually like this response a lot. Thank you for that analogy...

As Shankveld and others have said, don't feel pressured to be more "active" aside from watching the show. If you love to watch MLP: FiM, you're already a fine brony.

I'd like to second most of what has been said, as well as ask a question: why do you feel like you need to be "more dedicated"? Are you seeing the large amount of fan material being produced and feeling as though you need to contribute? Or is it that you have some friends who are more into the show that you feel you are neglecting as a result of not being as up to date on the show as they are?

I ask these questions because I am finding your position difficult to understand. I am probably in the opposite position...ponies have invaded almost every aspect of my life. I haven't been this into something since I was a little kid growing up on Star Trek, where I'd read Star Trek books and watch tapes of episodes over and over and over again and generally be so far into it that I neglected almost everything else. While my fandom of FIM hasn't quite penetrated to the level of outright neglect of other things, in some respects that's only because my being a fan of the show has resulted in my making actual friends, and a good portion of the time I spend involved with fan activities has to do with hanging out with other people in one way or another. Even then, though, I often feel like I'm TOO engrossed in my fandom of FIM and that I need to cut back significantly or even entirely.

So, in approaching this from the opposite perspective, I'm hoping you can explain a bit more so I can understand your position.

Brooooooooooo, calm the heck down =o

Dedication isen't needed to be appart of a fandom, just a loveing intrest in whatever fandom we take part in........Takeing part of createing things, going to events, attending fourms, all that shiz is just extras to express love for the show

Don't feel the need to overly exert yourself to prove you're a fan. If you like the show, you have the right to call yourself a fan, you don't have to go over the top to prove it.

Yeah, dude if you like MLP:FIM you are all ready a fan of the show. A fan is a fan if you watch the episodes you are all ready a dedicated fan. Your whole life doesn't need to revolve around MLP. HatGuy pretty much hit the nail on the head there are several types of Bronies out there.

1. There are the people who watch the show and maybe wear a "Brony" or My Little Pony T-shirt once in a while (That would be my category)

2. There are people who spend hours collecting merchaindise and drawing ponies, and writing fanfics etc.etc.etc.

So pretty much if you watch it you are all ready a "Brony". You shouldn't feel bad that it hasn't taken over your life . A brony is a brony my friend.
