I find it odd that Twilight's still going to have adventures

Now that she's a princess and all, with a castle in Ponyville, and undoubtedly royal duties and all.....Especially when it seems like all the other princesses- even Cadance, have to withhold having any fun and do their royal duties. In “Three's a crowd” Twilight seems excited to finally get to spend time with her sister-in-law, who clearly doesn't have much free time- because of royal duties and all- to even manage family relationships. In the same episode, Cadance states that life ruling the empire is predictable, and that she enjoys getting out and having some excitement- which Discord provided for her, by putting Twilight to the test, when she was with her. And in the IDW comic Friends Forever #3, Celestia thanks Spike for giving her the opportunity to go out on an adventure, because as a princess and a teacher, she doesn't often get the chance to have fun and go out on journeys like Twilight and her friends.

Did Twi just miss the 'Mo more fun. Time to stay at home, tend to your castle, and citizens, and be a princess and do royal duties.' memo?

So...I'm just finding it odd that Twilight, of all ponies, now being a princess and all, is seemingly still going to be allowed to go out with her friends and continue her adventures, while......Spike watches the castle and does all Twilight's formal princess work that all the other princesses seem to be doing? (Poor Spike) How is that even going to work, with Twi being a princess, with a castle and all? (unless she doesn't get to go out and do fun things anymore, like how all the other princesses have to be rulers and princesses and not have fun, and the mane 5 have to learn how to be without Twilight, saving the day on their own, and teaching friendship lessons across the nation, and Sunset Shimmer has to return, and join them to fill in for Twilight, and take down bad guys with the power of the 7th (and Twi can still be her OP self, lending her power, from her royal castle, when she feels the 'force' calling))

I think I'm ok with that, mostly because I think adventuring and taking on opponents is going to be Twilight's thing, since she has demonstrated numerous times that with the help of her friends she is more than up to the task. One thing I didn't like about season 4, despite it being one of my favorite seasons, is that not enough really changed for her at that point, and the show only brought up her being a princess when it was convenient for the plot, while at other times she just seemed to live her normal life with a new set of wings being the only difference. Sure, there were times when being a princess meant she had to do stuff like preside over a flea market to mediate disputes or sit in on the Equestria Games, but moments when we saw her do stuff like that were too few for me.

I do however buy Twilight as an adventurer, and that is an important task for preserving a kingdom. I would honestly rather the writers take that route than a more realistic one where she does nothing but boring royal duties while everypony else carries on with normal episodes sans Twilight. There definitely needs to be a balance, and based on the preview for season 5, I think the writers have chosen a good route. That way, I imagine there will be some key episodes where Twilight does stuff like travelling around and mediating disputes, possibly necessitating the use of force at times, but also more normal episodes for each character, not all of whom have a nice shiny new castle.

Celestia, Luna, and Cadence each have geographical areas they are formally responsible for (Equestria by day, Equestria by night, and the Crystal Empire respectively). Furthermore Celestia and Luna have specific duties (raising the sun and moon) that need to be performed daily, limiting the amount of time off they could take.

Twilight doesn't have any of that. It's likely that she will have duties, but these duties could be a different kind of duty to the other princesses. For example, her duty might be to protect Equestria from magical threats, and restore magical imbalances. These are still royal duties, but not the boring kind. She can be a badass princess along the lines of Princess Leia from Star Wars, or Princess Eilonwy from Chronicles of Prydain (the books, not the Disney film which undersold her character).

There's already another badass royal in MLP:FIM, which sets some precedent. You wouldn't say that Queen Chrysalis never gets up to anything exciting.

* Raising the Sun and Moon is something you can do from being anywhere, so Celestia and Luna remain in Equestria's Capital because it makes the most sense for them. Being the duel matriarchs of their entire nation, traveling around wouldn't make sense for them.

* Cadence is the Princess of Love, but her sub-category is linked to the Crystal Empire, so she remains in that general vacinity to spread love and such. She clearly travels around though, more than Celestia and Luna anyway, shown with that fancy train she goes on periodically.

* Twilight represents friendship. Unless she wants to penpal to 10,000 ponies across Equestria, traveling around is the best way to spread 'The Magic of Friendship' across Equestria, as she's called it herself. I actually believe it to make perfect sense that Twilight will continue her adventures with her friends. 'What's the Princess of Friendship, without her friends?' Twilght will travel around the nation spreading positive relationships and friendship with the assistance of her friends/The Elements of Harmony.

How do you know that Celestia, Luna, and Cadence don't have adventures every day? Cadence even shared an adventure with Twilight in "Three's a Crowd".

I suppose they may well do. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

However there are things Celestia says from time to time ("Oh, Twilight. The Grand Galloping Gala is always awful.") that suggest that she's constantly busy with royal business (and presumably running a school for gifted unicorns must take up a fair chunk of her time as well), having little time left to do anything interesting, and is weary from this situation.

I'm sure once Twilight grows to the size of Cadence she'll start feeling like she sticks out about abit and do more "Ruling" type stuff. Till then she'll just cruise with her crew anf fix friendships where ever they go XD

I interpreted part of your post in such a way that I began to think of Spike becoming a princess.  o_O  And he might as well; little guy's earned it.

Oh, and on-topic attempt: I see what the OP is saying.  However, the show's central character is Twilight (though, in my mind, the show revolves around Rainbow Dash), and having her sit in a throne all day every day doing distinctly princessy things (I don't know what that would be lol - ask Princess Spike) might be rather uninteresting.  Show doesn't even really have to try and justify it; would be boring otherwise.

From what we saw of the preview, it would seem her duties as a princess WOULD be going on adventures and dealing with issues outside of Ponyville. That is what her castle is designed for; Heck she could be dealing with foreign relations or something along those lines, and she would have her friends to back her up.

Each princess's position is unique, and going out on adventures might as well be Twilight's job description. Like others have said, she is the designated "Badass Princess". She's the one that'll do most of the heavy lifting, so to speak, since she's already used to doing it and was set up in this position from the start.

Also, don't forget Twilight has one thing the other three princesses haven't got: main character power. ;)

her busy schedule is seen quite well in IDW's comic Micro series #10, when Luna has to fill in for Celestia, during the day, which is stressful and leaves her exhausted, since there's so much to do in such a short amount of time.

she was still adventuring with her friends after she became an alicorn. She she had some duties in canterlot but that's no different from day to day people/ponies having a job She'll find time :)

1. Twilight has no royal duties, subjects, or domain like Cadence and the others do.

2. A thousand years ago Celestia and Luna were adventuring all the time, even invading the Crystal Empire and ousting the tyrant there like he was Saddam Hussein.
