gaming Console Wars: The Idiot's Guide To Stupidity

Oh indeed. I tend to include PC when I talk about the consoles as an umbrella statement. It has more freedom but it's just another platform to play on as far as I'm concerned.

Quite honestly I'd be perfectly fine with all of the consoles going away and PC becoming the only gaming device just so developers would put more focus in creating the game than whether it'll work on two different systems and whatnot.

That's a dream that will never be realized in humanity's entire lifetime. I sold half my collection of games because i didn't have reason to play them anymore, but also because the online was empty in them.

Battle of Z is heading in that direction as i've searched for rooms and found only one or two left.

So i'm selling that one and upgrading to the next, Xenoverse.

Interesting points by Blunty! I shall also say no to the console wars. It's odd how people wrap up their choice of console in their whole identity. I do think it's silly, but most of us have our preferences. It doesn't really bother me unless you're one of the really hardcore fans who is pushy and won't admit there's anything good about the other companies and machines. Me, I played all Nintendo machines at first--NES, SNES, Game Boy Color, N64--but I wasn't a "fanboy" and I had no problem branching out to Sega and Sony later on.

I don't see any big differences between the Xbox One and the PS4 for that matter; they're both basically computers, they both cost too much, you can play Blu-Rays on both machines now, and they have most of the same games! Where does the war come in? So I don't participate and in fact I don't own any of the new consoles. I won't buy one from Microsoft on principle, Nintendo's new gimmicky systems don't interest me, and I got the best that Sony had to offer when I bought the PlayStation 2. It was the perfect system with a library you could explore for years and years. Why trade up??  ^_^

So I stick with the PS2, Dreamcast, Genesis, and sometimes the GameCube, and I'm very happy with all of them.

While i know almost nothing about PC's i still know when someone is being a jerk about it. I know several pc gamers and they have earned my respect, which is never easy to do. Know that i don't hate PC Gamers, as i said before i only respect those who don't worship it like its a god.

Watching TechQuickie, LinusTechTips, JayzTwoCents, HardwareCanucks and the Tek Syndicate can help with learning about PCs. The machines might seem scary at first, but really, a PC can be one of the most useful things you own for a wide variety of things. As an example, while I built my PC with gaming in mind, it serves as a workstation for homework or other productivity too; and I don't mean things like word processing or PowerPoint, no, I'm talking heavy things like virtualization, video editing and network simulation. Both tasks, it performs well.

I try not to be a jerk about it, but I have awful people skills. Never know how someone's going to react to something I say.

Quite the pipe dream right there. While I wouldn't mind it either, it won't be realized any time soon.

Yeah I know it's never gonna happen. People are too caught up in the console wars and also the fear of monopoly. Competition breeds excellence, they say, but why does the competition have to make it impossible to play all the available games? =/

There's a rather simple reason why: money.

I beg to differ. Money buys me games. Games make me happier than a baby clam. Therefore money buys my happiness.

It's not really that hard to figure out. Sony, Nintendo, Valve, EA and Microsoft all want you, the consumer, to buy into their ecosystems. They use aggressive marketing, exclusives and some sort of rewards/customer loyalty program to tempt you into buying into these ecosystems; Nintendo's was Club Nintendo, Sony's is PS+ "free" games, Microsoft's is Games with Gold, EA's is On the House and Valve's is deep discount sales. Basically, they want your money.

I know I've admitted to being a pretty big Valve fan before but I can't deny that Steam provides the bulk of their revenue today, nor can I deny that they're in it for the money. That is how a corporation do, and really, no company should be immune to criticism, even by their own fans.

Lucky for me all games aren't on one system, or I wouldn't have been able to play. I think my parents got my brother and I our first console just so we would stop monopolizing Dad's PC.

If all games were only on one machine, they could charge us anything they wanted! Money, indeed.  ;)

There aren't enough console choices as it is. It hasn't been the same since Atari and Sega went down. Sega had some really creative minds and brought originality to gaming that we haven't seen since, and Atari was cool to have around just for entertainment (that Jaguar controller xD). The console wars were always dumb, but at least in the 90s they were kind of interesting and people were fighting over real differences. You would meet not only the Nintendo and Sony kids, but the Sega kids (who were VERY devoted), the Atari loyalists, the "entertainment system" folks who had a 3DO, the arcade devotee with a NEO-GEO, and that one really weird kid down the block who had to settle for an Apple Pippin.

Now it's just the same three companies with the same three philosophies and the same three systems made over again with the same old game series going on forever. It's boring. Boring and expensive.

You can only get so much before you get bored of it. From my experience, its corruptive. For example, the games you get with a PSN PLUs don't stay on your console when it expires, you only keep 'em if you pay keep up the payments.

Twenty years of playing video games disagrees. I've never been bored and I don't see me getting bored ever. Between new games and the literally tens of thousands (or more) older games out there I'll always have something to play.

Yeah but there are fewer Quality games to choose from, either theres a dev who screws up and overlooks the bugs and glitches. then there's the steam which seems to have many good ones that would make the devs like Kojima and Crytek jealous or envious.

I'd hate to be either one.

I've honestly yet to see any game that was so unplayably glitchy that even I would condemn it. I would argue that games have even more quality than ever before and what flaws they do have they've learned to work around.

But what do I know? I'm the guy who likes Sonic 06 in spite of the glitchiness.

Well i can name one, try the DBZ games of late. They have suffered greatly due to neglect from the employees testing them. Overlooking the game breaking bugs will ruin a gmaes rep is not taken care of, but too late now. But i'm still holding reservations on Xenoverse, hopefull they pull this off.

The most recent one I've played is Ultimate Tenkaichi but I didn't play it long enough to really get a feel for it. All I know is that I disliked the fact that it took almost all control away from me. Raging Blast 2 is better by far.

Personally I'll never understand the people who think gaming has gotten worse. To me it's only gotten better.

Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV confirmed games of the generation for me and they haven't even come out yet.

Besides, anime-based games tend to be some of the more meh games. Some are better than others but I'll take an original game over them any day. *May be bitter about the fact that none of the anime I like get games in the US*

I skimmed through most of this so i'm just going to put my 2 cents in as a gamer who has played on consoles and and which ones I didn't own I emulated and also who games on pc, I have found my self to love every thing from mario to call of duty and many indie games and other jems in between It all comes down to what you are looking for and are into.
