RainbowTashie 378 February 13, 2015 Share February 13, 2015 Ok Ok odd question I know but we saw when Twily had a taste of the poison joke her horn went all floppy. But in the pony creator OC's with cracked horns are quite a popular thing... That and sombras got all beat up. It would be cool to think unicorns crash their horns together but then why would they need to with magic? It was just something I was randomly pondering. 2 Sig tweaked to perfection by Coby! The Peculiar Derp 193 February 13, 2015 Share February 13, 2015 I assume they would be made of keratin, as real-life animal's horns are. The Poison Joke messed with their physiology. Her horn became limp precisely because that's not how it's supposed to be.

cuteycindyhoney 13,307 February 14, 2015 Share February 14, 2015 Let us turn to our friend the narwhal for a comparison. I know it's a tooth, but I think the structure would be similar. Plus, it stands to reason that a unicorn's horn would need a blood supply to nourish the great concentration of nerve ends that direct the magical energy flow. 1 Thank you Sparklefan1234!!! sweetolebob18 728 February 14, 2015 Share February 14, 2015 (edited) Just because it grows out of their head doesn't mean it's a bone. Teeth are not counted as part of the bones of a human body. Also, I know for a fact that deer shed their horns every year. I also recall T going horn to horn w Nightmare Moon in episode 2. This seems to imply that horns are fairly solid. Unikitty 1,212 February 14, 2015 Share February 14, 2015 It seems there are three prominent formats of horns. Antlers are made up of solid bone(covered in a tissue called velvet) and are often shed or prone to breaking off. Many bovines have a keratin horn built around a smaller bone 'horn' core, and filled with proteins. Rhino horns are somewhat different in that whilst still made up of keratin, have no bone core to attach to. Interestingly, horses are closer related to Rhinoceros (Order: Perissodactyla) than they are to bovines and deer (Order: Artiodactyla). It makes sense that their horn structure would be similar to that of a rhino and thus would have a 'hollow' horn made of keratin and without any bone core. Unikitty 1,212 February 14, 2015 Share February 14, 2015 @@Unikitty Wouldn't that make their horns weak though to the point of not being able to have horn fights like sword fights? Maybe Uni horns are not based on any real life concepts and are just really hard. I looked this up cause I really had no idea what keratin was, and it seems it's not as strong as bone, especially hair being made of it too. What would happen if a horn one broke though? Permanent magic loss? Temporary if it grows back? Sure. But this would just be assuming they're unicorns as though they'd exist in real life. There's nothing to say that unicorn horns aren't magically augmented, or that they use magic to reinforce their horn when it's used in a physical combat event. I don't think a unicorn would lose their power completely if they lost their horn. Magic is an element that is in their very being, and a horn just acts as a focus point. It's reasonable to assume that their magic would be less effective or attuned, but it'd surely still be there. Also to note, I'm sure that unicorns would have developed a way to magically regrow horns, especially if it turns out they are really important for magic use.
