movies/tv Is Nickelodeon the Sega of Cartoons?

Whenever I think of Nickelodeon's animation catalogue, I can't help but feel similarities to Sega. Think about it, they were both known for quirky, experimental titles. They both marketed themselves as cooler and more cutting edge than the alternatives. and several of their products are similar in one way or another.

SpongeBob = Sonic - Long running pop-culture icons

Rugrats = Alex Kidd - Former mascot retired

Avatar = Skies of Arcadia - Vibrant and epic RPG-esque adventure

My Life as a Teenage Robot = Space Channel 5 - Cute girl kicking alien ass (Plus, Jenny has a very similar design to Ulala)

Hey Arnold! = Jet Set Radio - Urban setting and Jazz/funk based soundtrack

ChalkZone = Nights - Heavy focus of visuals and atmosphere

As for other kids networks. I always saw 90s/early 2000s Cartoon Network as very similar to Nintendo in a lot of ways. They didn't care too much about demographics so much as they did about showcasing their respective mediums. Plus, they were both a bit heavy on censorship. And Disney Channel believe it or not, was similar to the PlayStation IMO. A semi-upstart product hoping to court a slighty older audience, in DC's case, it was the 9-14 year old "Tween" market. Nowadays, Modern Nickelodeon is like Microsoft, a company who cares nothing for their target audience, nor the medium they're known for, and will hype up whatever mediocre crap that makes them the most money, rather than quality content.

Well, Classic Nickelodeon is my favorite 90's cartoon channel and Sega's my favorite game company..

Seems legit. Nice analogy though.

But, then what's The Hub/Discovery Family? Valve? :P

With the evolution of, no I should probably say de-evolution of society kids just don't seem to want quality they just need anything that they can joke about really. The only cartoons I can think of that are the same quality as the 2006 and below era now adays are MLP, Gravity Falls, and Steven Universe. Nickelodeon has nothing high-quality atm.

There's also Adventure Time, Regular Show, Clerance, TMNT, Star Vs. The Forces of Evil, and Wander Over Yander. Really though, there are still enough good cartoons out right now. It's just that bad always outweighs good, even back in the 90s and 2000s.

Yes, because they were both great companies that have lost their luster in recent years. Also Nickelodeon is ruining Spongebob in the same way Sega is ruining Sonic. Both used to be great, but have now gotten wrecked by people who don't do the IP justice.

I can agree with most of those I just have a terrible memory. I do wish they would have more higher quality shows though, I mean at least disney is starting to take advantage of their cartoon section. They're introducing cartoons a bit more frequently now.

No, because the Hub/Discovery Family can actually count to three.

And just like Sega, they're getting left behind in the industry they used to be forerunners in. Everyone loved the Genesis (which was in direct competition with the  SNES), then the Dreamcast was great but a commercial failure. All attempts to re-capture their glory via software have not gone well. Overshadowed by formal rivals and swept aside by well-performing newcomers, we are clearly witnessing a decline. Now they continuously throw their forgotten, disgraced mascot Sonic at us hoping that nostalgia and loyalty will still grab people's attention.

Similarly, Nickelodeon was going head-to-head with Cartoon Network with their 90's lineup, both pushing the other to do better in an attempt to outdo the competition which gave us amazing content. Nowadays Cartoon Network and The Disney Channel are pushing the envelope, giving us amazing shows like Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Wander Over Yonder, Gravity Falls, Regular Show, The Amazing World of Gumball, etc., while Nickelodeon is mostly stagnating.

Speaking of throwing old mascots to play on nostalgia and loyalty, isn't there another Spongebob movie coming out soon? You know, the live-action/CQ one? Yeah.

Really the only connection I can come up with is with Spongebob to Sonic because both are debatably getting ruined now. Though I think Sega can still make good games other than Sonic. I don't know what I would compare Cartoon Network to. But I would compare Disney to Nintendo because both come out with well known and memorable content even today although they both get some criticism as well. Like there's a few people who hate recent Nintendo games and some who hate Disney's newer movies especially Frozen.

That movie's been out already.

Oh come on, if I knew that would be the only thing you were going to comment on I would have left it out :P

But yeah, that doesn't surprise me. I explicitly didn't pay any attention to it other than the trailer I saw one time during the previews for another movie.

But to the point. Yeah, it's hard to believe how far both Nick and Sega have fallen. Just recently, Sega announced that they're focusing less on big console releases, and instead moving to handheld and mobile. Like I said, Modern Nickelodeon is the Microsoft of cartoons. They're still huge in the industry, despite the lack of ideas and superior competition.
