...in chalk.

The snow melted.  Now I can get outside and do stuff.  I had someone help me so doing this on a full-sized sidewalk square didn't take very long  ...and it's a good thing too because even though it may look like a sunny warm day in the photo, it was freezing out.

Hey thanks all you guys.  I'm glad you all like it.

The next step? Paint and empty walls >w>

That's totally going to be one of my summer projects!  Chalk is fun, but what sucks about it is the fact it doesn't last, but because of that fact, one of its benefits is you can pretty much do it anywhere and people are fine with it ...even though I think it IS technically graffiti.

I want to do something like this now...

I need to buy chalk.

Go to the store and head straight for the art department and buy soft pastels(make sure you don't get oil pastels).  You could just go to the toy section and get a giant bucket "sidewalk chalk" for the same price as a small pack of pastels, but the difference is well worth it.  Also, you know those little rolled up paper things people use for shading charcoal drawings?  I don't know what they're called, but those things are awesome for this.  They save a lot of chalk by spreading it around nice.  I used no more than half a stick of any of the main colors in this picture.

woah!! that's awesome!! tell me! how did ya do it?

...with chalk :derp:

Good advice and I do infact know what your talking about with those roll-up paper things, whatever there called. I am legit going to do this as the weather improves. Just hide them around places when I'm out and about XD

Do you have any method for doing a sketch before actually doing the rest, or are you just so darn skilled it just happens? XD

Also, do you do base layers of color? It looks like you did an entire layer of white to start and layered over it, is this right?

I have never done chalk art before.. well not since I was like 10.

I always look at a small picture I print out as a reference.  I pieced together this picture of Vinyl from some random vectors and stuff the night before.  It's "public art" so having a reference helps prevent making costly mistakes while drawing.

I take a light colored piece of chalk and make rough outline, then color the areas individually.  I'm usually pretty sloppy, so I sometimes outline everything another time after coloring to clean up the edges.

Making something like a white base layer would blend too much with the other colors.

Yes!  Everyone; let's cover the streets and sidewalks with ponies!

just found out I already had chalk pastels! These must be ancient because I have no recollection of ever getting them

Gots the whole rainbow even. I may see about playing with them this week if I have the time and the weather is nice.

Wow! I am officially impressed!  How long did it take you?

Thanks.  With two of us working on it, we were done in about an hour, maybe a little less.
