It means a mod reviewed your topic, found it to abide by the rules, and published the topic to the pubic.

well... from what I understand if you post in a place where a moderator needs to approve posts (like here) you get a notification if it was approved.

I'm pretty sure it means that they approve of it.

It means that a topic you created was approved. Simple as that. It's usually when you create a topic in a place that requires moderator approval. I think.... I'm probably thinking of something else.

All of the above are accurate, but wait there's more! You receive the notification if:

1. You post is specific section requiring approval (such is Site Questions and Technical Support)  and a staff member (Sectional, Moderator, Admin, or IT) approve it.

2. You are on Moderation Queue (read here), and your post may have been approved. *

3. You created a topic, and a member on Moderation Queue has made a post that staff have approved. *

4. You choose to manually send the post or topic to a Moderator using the 'Wait for Approval' function and it was approved. *

5. Another member posted in your topic and choose to manually send the post to a Moderator using the 'Wait for Approval' function and it was approved. *

* Note due to a failure in design the Mod Queue does not allow Moderators to deny the post in the 'pending state' that it is in. If we deem the post not within the rules, we will have to approve it and then hide it. I actually just did this to you to show you how it looks.
