What are you supposed to do with a bible?

I have the Torah, bible, Koran, and several gospels that were not used in the bible. I also have the satanic bible, Bhagavad gita, book of Mormon, and several other religious and philosophical texts. My mother and I have lots of books, many of which might be considered controversial. Information isn't evil, it's simply what you do with it and how you interpret it. I however I see my religious texts as no different and no more valid than I do my books on ancient mythology and fairy tales.
I don't think you should read most religious books to children though, especially the bible. It's far to violent and cruel. My mother certainly didn't allow it on my reading list till I was 9yrs old because the crucifixion of Jesus story gave me nightmares.

I consider my religion to be Whovianism.

@@Nightmare Muffin,

Literal answer to the topic: Read it? It's a book, what else could you do with it, prop up a chair with uneven legs?

Actual answer: I read the Bible . . . not frequently but I have it right next to my bed. I've also read excerpt from the Tipitaka and the Toa Te Ching. Hell, I've even read some of my Wiccan former girlfriend's grimoire. Personally, I look for similarities. I read to discover the common truths that the Divine speaks to all people but in different words.

I apply what I read and learn in life, that's what one is supposed to "do" with it.

Like any other book you could read it, reading it dosen't mean you agree with all of its messages but it just means that you read it. The bible like it or not has had a significant influence on western culture and civilization so having a basic knowledge of the bible does help in understanding quite a bit of western history and culture.

I don’t mean to sound like a saint cause I ain’t.

You read it if you want to hear the word of God. Get perspectives, guidance, feelings of hope, perseverance, safety, refuge, encouragement, knowing you’re not alone.

I haven’t read it in a while though. Can’t name many verses either but I remember some that people have shown me are encouraging when I’ve been troubled. You just have to accept and trust it. Sometimes a lot. Sometimes quite a lot. See Job.

Anybody using it to bash others misses the point. They easily can be bashed themselves is the reality. Just not as much.

Again I ain’t such a saint, but I guess that’s not the point. Lol saying that does make me sound as such, help me D:

As I see it the Bible is mythology and from it we can get a picture of the beliefs and ethics of the ancient cultures from which it derived from. It has major historical value in that way. I enjoy listening to ideas of how it came to be and also about the books that the orthodoxy rejected, which paint more interesting pictures of early Christian culture.

Read it of course! Read it, learn from it and find the countless treasures that are there to be found. @DubWolf seems to have encapsulated it pretty well so I’ll just roll with that. I don’t read it from cover-to-cover like a novel. I go from here to there as needed and use it for reference or clarity. I can’t quote chapter and verse and never could. I’m not good at that sort of thing and it certainly isn’t a requirement. Everyone reads it differently and that’s one of countless great things about it.
