Cutie Marks: Principle and Practice

I'm curious in a sort of sober way over cutie marks. In the episodes I have seen so far (2-3 from S5 and a handful from S1) every pony seems to have some way of fulfilling the attributes which are symbolised by their cutie marks, be it work, past time or in personality. So far, everyone seems able to fill the role they want (i.e. there's little in the way of either responsibilities or competition when it comes to this fulfilment.)

I was wondering, are there any examples of ponies in the series who, for practical reasons, cannot fully express what their cutie mark is emblematic of? Perhaps a job is already taken, perhaps there are family commitments or social responsibilities that mean that there's either no practical time, manner or place for it.

If so, how do they cope with it? Do they make the best of it? Do they have reinterpret their cutie mark, and if so, how far are they willing to stretch it in order to fit their current circumstances? Or do they just get on with their life? What's your opinion?

I know I'm applying very real world situation, perhaps a little cynically, on an animated world, but I'm someone who likes poking and examining things in different lights in the hope of learning something new. What do you think?

You could make the argument that this is kind of what happened with sunset shimmer: Her role and Twilight's role seem to have been the same: If Sunset hadn't already left equestria when twilight appeared, she most likely would have grown jealous of twilight and done the exact same thing she did in EQG.

Ah right, that's a pony I know very little about. I'll have to go away and do some homework!

Look up the season five episode: Appleoosa's Most Wanted if you haven't seen it yet. It addresses what happens when a pony misinterpreted their cutie mark.

I haven't seen that, so I will do!

Thanks very much for the replies :)
