"Excellent!" boomed Stormwing. "I cannot wait to meet your friends. And, by all means, keep the title- I certainly hope it will bring fear to the foes that come across it! Now... Lilith, if you would do me a favor and go on ahead and alert the others to our return- I am merely going to share some pieces of my mind that I have shared with you. Leaf Storm, Krilith, if you would say your goodbyes and head back to the Sanctuary- you'll meet again, soon enough."

What followed was five minutes of various hugs, farewells, and- for the first time that Harcourt has heard, at least- laughter from Lilith. As they were doing so, Stormwing gestured up the path, walking next to Harcourt as they picked their way back to the main path. Not too long after, you heard rustling from the left side of road, as well as a vaguely pony-like shape dashing forward among the trees, further down the path.

As it passed, he chuckled slightly... but shortly thereafter, Stormwing's face grew grim. "Now that I know that you are willing and able, I may speak my mind more fully. Grand Ranger Darkhollow wishes to begin a... crusade? No, crusade might be too sanctified a word- but it's close enough. As of right now, he is gathering a large contingent of rangers from throughout the Empire and intends to reopen the portal between our Sanctuary and the Equestrian Sanctuary and provide a stronghold to evacuate ponies from- and, perhaps, to act as a staging point for something greater." Stormwing looked deeply into him, awaiting his reaction.

Lilith dashed through the trees, intending to beat them back to the cottage by a considerable amount. She still had a large smile on her face from her friends. The voices in her head weren't bothering her... today was a good day in almost every regard.

As she entered the cottage, she looked around, noticing Stardust and Aria sitting in the main room. "Ranger Duodecim Stormwing is on his way," she stated, "He has a request for us. He's making his way back with Harcourt, who is carrying half of a forest worht of wood behind him."

Psych smiled a bit, and followed her out to the garden. From what he could sense, it seemed like a beautiful place, and somewhere where fighting and hatred could not reach. He then heard Dash ask him what they were looking for. "Well..." He began, "When I first met up with the group, I believed that we were searching for refuge from Sombra and his evil forces. However, as I traveled on with them, it became evident that we were searching for something else entirely, something that could stop Sombra once again. The Elements of Harmony. We were able to meet with Miss Rarity before, and found that one of my companions, Harcourt, was the new holder of generosity. We were then told to come here, the Griffon Kingdom, to begin our search for the others of the elements. On the way here, we... Lost someone important in an attack by Sombra's forces, and that loss... It makes me want to find the elements even more... To make sure Sombra can no longer take ponies away from the ones who care about them..."

"Cool, that tells us almost nothing," remarked Aria, whose eyes had been ravenously taking in the serene sights offered by the windows. The addition of this variable set her mind to work, though to come up with a proper assessment of the situation, she needed more information. So, with a rather flippant air, she addressed the immediate concern in hopes to gain some understanding of the new situation.

"Given the lengths we went to remain hidden, you might see how some foreign entity would be met with suspicion. Could you perhaps say something a bit more substantial than that rather ominous announcement?"

"The Equestrian Sanctuary, you say?  That would be the one I assume Lilith originated from, yes?  And a staging point..."

Harcourt gave a slow smile, a look of growing determination building across his muzzle.

"You're speaking of amassing a fighting force with which to strike at the dark ruler's heart with... that, good sir, is MY kind of crazy.  Well if that is indeed the case, I bring news that may help that end... but I think we would need to speak with your commander first."

A thought almost visibly seemed to spring onto his face, and he looked to the griffon as he kept walking.

"If I may, good Ranger, I feel inclined to ask you about Lilith.  She is... quite different from any other Ranger I had ever met before.  Might this old stallion inquire of you about her?  My interests are purely curiosity; I would believe that such a fascinating individual would have made an impression among the Rangers, so may I ask to hear what you know of her - within reason, of course."

Maybe there's more to her story than even she knows, he pondered.

"Oh, forgive me. I forgot that not everyone is well versed in our... culture, perhaps, is a more proper term for it." Lilith glanced sideways at her. "Well... Duodecim is a ranking within our system. I guess a military equivalent is like a major, except the rangers directly under his command number more like perhaps a captain at best. They form a council with the leader of the rangers in the country- known as an Unidecim, but known commonly as a Grand Ranger." As she explained, she laid her pack next to the others in a semblance of a neat order. "Stormwing was sent to investigate a strong Equestrian magic- which, in hindsight, probably means the Element that crossed the border- and he came across me where, after learning his intention, we found Harcourt- Stormwing's talking with him right now- and he sent me ahead to alert everyone here to his coming. Apparently, the Grand Ranger Darkhollow himself wants us to meet with him sometime in the near future because of this energy."

He's also big, fast and quite the imposing figure. Let's fight him!

How about, instead of doing that, we don't? He's another ranger, for Celestia's sake!

Shaking her head slightly out of annoyance, she quickly turned back towards the window. "He'll round the bend in a few minutes... they'll probably meet with Psych and Ms. Dash on the way."

I hope he doesn't have any ulterior motives....

Why would he?

He's a high-ranking ranger, and even among your own kind, Duodecims tend to be slippery. Keep your guard up.

Stormwing beamed. "Excellent to hear! Your words ease my ears more than you know. Let us hope that you speak for the rest of your group."

"Yes, there is plenty to her story that she does not yet know... and one that I will await the Grand Ranger's judgement on before sharing to you and you alone." He gave him a meaningful look. "I cannot afford to tell the world, or she becomes a huge target. But perhaps some basic backstory is in order- one of the things that the twins brought with them from Equestria were the profiles of all of the Equestria Rangers, living and dead." He cleared his throat.

"She was born in one of the many small, southern villages that populate your land, where she was taken under the wing of the Ranger Quickleaf and his outpost. However, in the northern reaches of the forest, soon after, the people of Manehattan began a ceremony known every year as the Forest Dance- a ceremony between Rangers and another group- known as the Rak'Shim, but commonly known as Hunters- that serves as both a county fair and a recruitment site for both parties. However, a group of arsonists interrupted the festival and, in their chaos, at least a full square mile of the forest was incinerated. In response, the forest created a beast known as a Bane, which proceeded to destroy the remnants of the ceremony- including the arsons. From there, it rampaged down to the south and destroyed all settlements in it's path, where, with the sacrifice of Quickleaf and the razing of the town, it's anger was sated and it disappeared back into the forest, much like an Ursa Minor would when it has finished its rage. Lilith survived by virtue of being left behind at the outpost at the time, and, by the time it came out, it had already lumbered away-much to her chagrin."

"After that, things become much blurry until recent times- she appealed directly to the Duodecim of the land for her full membership into the organization, and became a mercenary of sorts all throughout Equestria- and for the strangest things, as well. Gems were a big one- she specialized in enchanting her arrows to have plenty of deadly payloads- but she was just as likely to ask for a spell, a favor, even mere hints. I can guess that she was hunting the Bane, but I do not know for sure- I have only records to go off of. Afterwards, the document speaks that she was one of the sixteen Rangers who defended the Sanctuary for two weeks against the full force of the Dark Armies, and one of the twelve that survived to the second week, when the barrier was broken and it became a hunt through the sacred trees surrounding the Sanctuary. The document marks that she was the downfall of at least twelve confirmed kills, as well as a potential part in at least sixty or seventy more- and undoubtedly was responsible for many more through the various traps and tinkerings of the Equestrians. After that, I know no more- well, rather, I know two more facts that I will not share with you at this time.

"...and that would be that." he finished. "Perhaps something I shouldn't have shared without her permission, but I feel that you have some right to know, having traveled with her for some time. I trust that you will not abuse this knowledge..."

@@Pucksterv, Jay cowered back from Trivy. "Help you? But why would you want to try and leave here?" she asked, nervously, with a glance at the closed door. "Even if you could leave this place, you wouldn't get far. The entire castle is protected by spells, dark magic spells. As for telling my story, perhaps it's cuz I have nopony to tell it to. I have no family and no friends. All I have is Jinx, and she protects me from what is outside."

Jay looked jealously at Trivy's flank, at her cutie mark. She couldn't even begin to guess what it symbolised, but to Jay, a cutie mark was something that she had wanted for years, ever since Jinx had left her mind and the cutie mark she had had before had vanished. It hadn't been a true mark, simply an illustration of the fact that there was another pony's mind residing within her own. It had been a green and black yin yang sign, and even tho it hadn't been a true cutie mark, Jay had missed it when it had gone. With a cutie mark, however false, she was normal... without one, she was forever set apart, marked as a pony with no true destiny who had not discovered her special talent.

"You have my word that I shall not abuse this information... but do realize that, should I require to use it to help her, I shall.  I only ask that you put faith in my better judgement; after all, I have survived this long, have I not?"

He nodded, and returned his gaze to the road.  But only a few more steps were made before he spoke again.

"I must say, I am pleased to see the Ranger order has survived - I was under the supposition that poor Lilith might have had to rebuild it from the ground up.  Of course, it doesn't surprise me; I had a dealing or two with them in my past..."

The impish grin that crossed his features was only there for a moment before fading into more of a thoughtful look.

"Anyway, if I may, I am admittedly intrigued by these 'legends' you have alluded to - and I wonder if you would be willing to share this information as well; I'm not only curious as to what has been said about me - of course - but I'm wondering what is being said about each of us, as well as who is believed to be among our ranks.  Care to humour me?  We don't have much further to go."

As if conjuring it by words alone, the edges of the small village could be seen, just barely, through the trees.

It makes me want to find the elements even more... To make sure Sombra can no longer take ponies away from the ones who care about them..."

''Dear boy, my question is, what is it that you seek? Why are you here? I know you have some interest in my daughter, no question there. But what is your goal in life? For instance, see those squirrels. Their goal is to survive, to make it through the next cold season. But you, you have a whole head full of ideas. You live not only to survive. And I know that sounds strange, especially in the time of war. But think hard with that head of yours.'' Dash said as she used her stick to hit him softly onto his head.

''Before it's too late.'' she mumbled.

''HA! She protects you? She's keeping you captive. If you can't see that then you're the most naive pony I've ever met.'' Trivy walked to the door, first trying the handle. Then pushing it with her shoulder. When that didn't work she tried to buck it with her hind legs. ''Besides, you can still help me even if you don't wanna go. I don't care. I just wanna get out of here.''

Rave walked in circles in his own room, thinking. He was gritting his teeth, his eyes twitching a bit. So much was going on in his mind. Firstly it were Princess Twilight Sparkle's words.

"You get angry and attack somepony who is so weak she can barely even speak. Look at how low you have sunken. I knew you family, Rave and I know that you may act like you are one of them but I also know that underneath this act of yours you are a kind pony who is nothing like his family."

"You are wrong, so wrong. I am not kind" he said angrily, unsure about himself. The princess had sown doubt into Rave's mind and he was now unsure about himself.

After thinking about Sparkle's words for a moment, his thoughts returned back to the surviving Blackwater.

"That little Blackwater scum. Causing me all this trouble. I'm a hero here. I am the king's own righthoof pony for Umbra's sake......." he stopped to think some more. "If you were here, I would finish what I started. What I started all these years ago".

Rave started to think back to when he had arrived at the Blackwater mansion.

-------------------

He was there, leading a regiment of his own soldiers. The war was already going in their favor and Rave was not intending to share any of the power with the Blackwater family. There could only be one and Rave intended to have his house brought back to the top. None of his guards asked him any questions. They knew what their job was, they knew what was to come. Rave had hoofpicked them himself, only selecting the most ruthless, the most brutal and the most obedient ones for this task. This was not a task for the weak-minded, for the ones who were not ready to cross the line and never turn back. No, this was a task for someone like him.

He had already burned down all bridges after betraying Equestria in favor of Sombra, after having worked his way up in trust and then thrown it all away as he ensured his master's return. He was ready to cross another line.....

He had received information that the whole Blackwater family would be there. The ones that weren't were already being slaughtered as Rave had sent assassins after the ones that were abroad.

"Luther you old fool, you won't know what hit you".

As they reached the mansion, one of his guards knocked on the door. He looked up at the sky while waiting. It was dark, the clouds were gathering. The once sunny warm skies of Equestria were showing their first sign of change. A change that would forever remain unchanged.

The door opened up...

The Darkmanes stormed inside.

The horror was unleashed....

The Darkmanes were hunting down their designated targets. Luther Blackwater was in his study, fighting off Rave's guards. While they were injuring him with their spears, he was staving off most of the attacks. He had already broken a few of the guards bones, those who had thought him to be vulnerable. They had seen how wrong they were.

He managed to kick one of his guards, wounding him fatally. The guard was sent flying back, never standing up again. Rave's visuals hardened and he gritted his teeth.

"The old fool is not going down without a fight" he thought.

"Kill him" the dark voice in his head told him.

From a small sheath of his, he drew out a dagger with his levitation magic and then took it with his hoof. He started to approach the leader of the Blackwater family, who now had spears jutting from him. Despite his wounds, the old one kept on fighting, with strength that Rave had never before witnessed in his life. He came up behind him, then with a low voice and that of a snake, he whispered. "The Darkmanes send their regards".

His knife came up fast and stabbed him below the chest where he had been exposed. He kept on pushing, until he felt his body become lifeless. He drew out the dagger, wiped off the blood on Luther's own coat and then sheathed his dagger.

He looked around him, listening. He could hear screams. He smiled. His job here was done.

------------------------------------------

Rave was breathing a bit raggedly, having been reliving those moments.

He chuckled a bit, his eyes looking at the ground at nothing in particular. He chuckled again.

"You.... are... wrong.... Princess.... Kindness doesn't exist in my heart..... only darkness...." he started to laugh, then his laughter turned from being a mocking one into one of insanity and his eyes grew small and he laughed into the air.

"Well, I heard your name somewhere before, and the two twins that survived brought back with them plenty of tales of Equestrian people. For all it's worth, you certainly have some bold warriors among your ranks. One that caught me by surprise was of a particular thief that eluded all capture for decades after being schooled by one of the old masters of the arts." He paused. "I merely put two and two together- although, I guess, I mistakenly came up with five..."

With a soft chuckle, he shrugged. "But, hey. If nothing else, we have... you and your friends. That's a step in the right direction. Personally, I've only been to Equestria once before, although Grand Ranger Darkhollow told me he spent a decent chunk in his early life there. You'll know the lay of the land much better than us, as well as your special marks." His eyes return to the road. "I just hope that, if we fail somehow, the empire can find a way to protect its borders from the encroaching darkness..."

"Now, now... no talking like that; we shall NOT fail - can't afford to.  I've seen what happens when Sombra's forces dominate others... and it is NOT a pretty sight."

A quick flash of Baltimare in flames blinked across his mind.

"A particular thief, you say?  Well, perhaps that individual still lives and breathes yet," he grinned, "and you might see him in action, as well.  Keep your claws crossed, my robust Ranger friend."

Harcourt continued out of the woods and into the village.  He noticed with sideward glances that many griffons were seemingly frozen in place, poking their heads out of windows and staring at him, an old stallion dragging a sled piled with more lumber than was needed for an entire house - without the slightest hint of strain.

'Legends', eh?  Well, if there's going to be any hope fostered, then by Luna - we shall have to become legends.

His grin grew, and he stepped a bit livelier.  Reaching the cottage, he silently marveled over the fact that the pile of logs sat just a smidge taller than the roof of the place; there were deep trenches where the sleigh had been pulled along, and as soon as Harcourt stopped, there was an unmistakable >CRUNCH< as the poor sled finally gave way, crushed beneath the weight of a practical impossibility.

"Ooooh... well, I suppose I'll have to replace that."  He couldn't help it - he was beginning to like the idea of spreading legends; if they were going to have any chance of rallying the populace towards the idea of fighting Sombra, they had to have proof that there was a chance... and tales like the one he was certain would now spread would be the best way to do so.

He unstrapped himself, and looked to the Ranger.  "Well, we have arrived.  If you could be so kind as to wait here, I shall return shortly - mayhaps even with friends."  He made his way around to the front and poked his head inside.

"Hello?  I've returned... with a guest."

Unable to help himself, he smirked as he added:  "And a bit of wood."

"Holy horse feathers!!!" Stardust looked out the window at the massive pile of trees. Not simple split firewood...but entire trees.

Stardust looked away from the window towards the door. Back to reality and back to business. She listened to Lilith explain who they were supposed to meet and she heard the concern and annoyance in Aria's response. Stardust was having a difficult time trusting Lilith from the beginning and was wary of her the entire journey. The fight with Harcourt and words exchanged with her Aria made things a bit more tense. Lilith still did what was asked of her, but she wasn't sure if that was of spite or of something more ... unpleasant. Maybe she was truly trying to make up for the way she had been acting on the boat, maybe she was just a struggling pony with things that they did not know. Either way there was still a barrier of mistrust there and Stardust was not too keen on letting somepony inside the cottage with young ones and the others.

"Harcourt, I think it best we meet with this... guest... outside." Stardust gave Aria a look of concern and as she walked to the door. She never liked when ponies tried to come to her for anything, she never liked to feel backed into a corner. Stardust was always the one to offer the help when she felt that sting in her heart. Right now... it was not one of those times. She felt trapped and threatened. There was a time when this had happened before.....

Father has been missing for three days.... I am worried that mother has lost hope. I am worried that we won't be able to wait much longer for him to return. We are going to have to move on... I am scared.

It has been 4 months since the attack on Ponyville, mother and I have been traveling with a small group of ponies, they say that we can find help at the harbor. They say that the Griffon Kingdom has been sending supplies there.

Two years... Mother is dying.....

Mother is dead.... I am alone.

6 months, I found a place where I think it is safe. I am working on something that will make it even safer.

9 months. The mayor wants to see every pony in the city, they are going in sections. I am not technically in a section. I am hoping they will pass me over.

10 months. I met a pony, she was lost, and everypony in the city is starting to look very sick.

11 months. Aria and I are keeping out of sight of the guards. She is amazing. I am so lucky that I found such an amazing friend.

1 year since mother died. I light a candle. Aria plays a song, I cry.

2 months. Aria has been gone for two days, I am starting to worry. If she does not return by nightfall I have to go find her.

3 months. Aria is weak, the guards got to her while she was trying to get some food, I am trying to care for her, she is so weak. It's almost like her color has faded. Her cutie mark....

5 months. Aria is doing a lot better, she has some strength back, but she refuses to pick up her guitar.

6 months, I think.... I love...

8 months. Aria told me that the guards found me, she said that they tried to take me to the mayor, that I was the last pony in the city that needed to see her. She said that she followed them and then all of a sudden I ended up back in our home. The guards had been burnt and she found me asleep on the floor.

9 months. The guards are patrolling more than usual trying to catch me again.

10 months. THEY TOOK ARIA!!!

11 months. I gave up, to save Aria, even though she begged me not to, I had to save Aria.

2 years since Mother died. I lit a candle. Aria and I cried.

3 months. Aria still won't tell me what happened when I was taken by the guards.

5 months. I love you.....I just wish I could say it.

8 months. I found some ponies. They were lost. I think we might be leaving.

Harcourt had this goofy grin across his muzzle, and he stood just a little bit taller than usual. Stardust couldn't help but smile back and almost giggle at the sight of him.

"You do know you have to replace that sleigh right?" She giggled and stood next to him.

Jinx wouldn't allow you to leave this place, if the King does not permit it."

''Do you really think I care what Jinx thinks or 'allows'? Wow you really haven't been paying attention, have you?'' Trivy said rolling her eyes in disbelieve. ''Either you help me out or stop being so... naive and just shut up.'' she said getting angrier when the door wouldn't open. ''DAMN DOOR! just open already!'' She gave one last kick against the lock, making it fly wide open. She gave a proud smile while she popped her head around the corner. ''Now to get through this barrier spell.'' She mumbled, looking at the magical barrier inquisitively.

Harcourt grinned.  "I concur.  But I can address that later - for now, I'll be waiting in the back; our guest might actually be worth speaking to."

He leaned in close, speaking between the two of them.

"The Grand Ranger wishes an audience with us.  Star, if the Rangers have an interest in us, there's a possibility there... I believe we would be remiss if we didn't look into it.  This could be a gallop in the right direction; if we can get the Rangers behind us... we may have the beginnings of an army brewing here.  An army that might succeed with the Elements behind them."

He gave Star a grin, then whispered:

"They seem to know who I am, but they may not know about everypony..."

With a sly wink, he headed back outside to wait with Stormwing.  Upon his arrival, he asked, "So, we're waiting here for the others... care to trade a few jokes?  I heard quite a good one from an old stallion in Baltimare; it's about this purple mare and a traveling salespony..."

"Well, I suppose what I'm searching for is, uh, a place to belong..." His face turned to the ground, and he became saddened a bit. "All my life, I've never really felt like I've belonged, like there was no place in this world for me. That's why I left home, before I was captured by Sombra's forces. After I escaped, I found this group, and I tagged along, hoping they might help me find purpose. And, in a sense, they have." He gave a small smile.

"Leaving already?" she said to Trivy. "I would not advise trying to break this spell. It is tuned to you, and any attempt to break thru will result in pain. I do not wish for you to suffer any hurt."

''I do not wish for you to suffer or hurt.'' Trivy said trying imitate Jinx's voice. ''It's funny that you say that. Because I recall not even an hour ago fainting on the floor because you but cursed spell on me.'' she hissed at her. She then turned back around and continued to test out the barrier. She poked out her hoof, only to be hit by some sort of electric magical charge which made probably hair on her body stand up straight. Trivy blew on her hoof, as if she was putting out a fire. ''Darn it!'' She threw the door closed with anger.

She walked back into the room, walking past Jinx while looking at her with resentful eyes. ''If I can't leave and you won't do anything to me, what's the purpose of me even being here!?" she said as she jumped on the bed.

There was a sudden knock on the door. A dark pink pony stood in the doorway, impatient to wait for somepony so she opened it herself. Her eyes were covered by the shadow of her mane but Trivy knew something evil was definitely staring at her.

''I think I have answer for that.'' The pony said with a wicked grin.

@@Count Paradox,

''I think you're right mister Psych. You do have a purpose. I knew it the first moment I saw you. You have this light, this glow that reminds me of an old friend. She has...excuse me.. had this same light. You know where that light comes from?'' Rainbow took her walking stick and poked Psych in his chest. ''It comes from the kindess inside your heart. It's just too bad you can't see it yourself yet. And that has nothing to do with the fact that you're blind.'' She put her stick back on the ground and continued walking.

''Mister Harcourt has already seen his light, it's a different yet similar light to yours. But I can sense he still has his doubts as well. He still does not believe in himself enough. Insecure stubborn old stallion that he is. He never changes.'' She said with a chuckle.

He smiled a little and blushed, rubbing the spot on his chest where she poked him. "I... I think I understand what you mean... If Harcourt's new job as wielder of generosity has anything to do with it, I might know what you mean. But..." He followed her, his mind on something else she had said. "What do you mean that your friend had the same light that I have? I can only surmise who that friend is, but that would mean you either had truly forgotten who you were until now or lied about your identity for all these years..."

WARNING, LONG POST

@@Count Paradox,

"I may know who I am now but in a few minutes I may not even remember how I ended up here in this garden talking to you. That's how amnesia works unfortunately. As for my friend, I do not like to remember what happened to her. In fact, her tragic death was the thing that triggered my amnesia. It's just too painful to think about everything that happened that day. I lost all of my friends, either to death or insanity. I keep those memories hidden away as much as I can.'' Rainbow walked over to a small wooden bench that was standing in front of a large lake filled with swans and lilies. She sat down quietly. "I suppose there is no harm in telling you the story at this time. I might as well before I forget why I even came out of bed this morning." she chuckled even though she knew there was no actually humor to it.

''Rarity had disappeared after we lost the battle at the crystal front. AJ never made it out alive. Fluttershy, Pinkie, Twilight and I had hidden ourselves in a cave of the crystal mountains. We had given up hope. We were tired of fighting. We even wished for death a few times. Especially with the Winter's wind hanging around. We decided we could still make it out alive if we went to the griffon empire. Gilda had been staying there, taking care of Winter for me. Twilight refused to come with us. She said she had found something about a legend. We didn't believe her, we thought she had gone mad. Such fools we were. The next thing we were saying goodbye to each other. Twilight was going to travel around Equestria to prove her theory. Pinkie, Fluttershy and I wished her good luck before we went our separate ways.''

''We traveled for a few days, it was hard. With the cold wind and snow at our hoofs. We were halfway when we were ambushed by a platoon of Darkmane soldiers. We had been so careful traveling and yet not careful enough. Everything happened so fast. All we could do was run. Fluttershy had trouble keeping up. She had been feeling sick ever since we left the cave. She.. they got to her eventually. We tried to safe her but we didn't have enough strength. We fainted, almost bleeding out. Next thing I know, I wake up to find a lifeless flutter next to me and Pinkie ran off. I buried her near a tree and cried, for days.''

For about 10 minutes, if not longer, Rainbow stared at the swans swimming elegantly in the lake. She needed time to collect all her thoughts. She had never told anything

''I continued my travels, I had to get home, to Winter, to my family. I arrived at Baltimare, they were almost finished with the wall. The word was out, Twilight had been captured and executed. I met Gilda and Little Winter at the docks. Although, at that time, Winter wasn't little anymore. She had grown so much since the last time I saw her. Then I... I went home. Not long after that I started having trouble remembering things. Who I was, where I was. After a while, Gilda couldn't handle it so she left. I don't blame her. To have your own wife not even recognize you, that's really tough.''

''Winter went with her and then she returned with you all. And then, when I woke up from my nap, when I heard your voice calling me, that was the moment I realized Twilight had been right all along.''

And there they stood- a middle-aged stallion and griffon, sitting on the front porch, telling jokes and laughing, almost entirely comfortable in each others presence (at least to anyone watching).

With a few fading guffaws from Harcourt's latest joke, he sighed and turned as Lilith came outside to join them. With a soft smile, she took a seat on the far end of the porch, remaining silent for a few seconds before quietly ruminating. "Honestly, I can't believe what we've been through in the last month... But, despite all that has happened, perhaps we can come up on top in the end."

Stormwing glanced at her, and his face darkened slightly before turning back, remaining quiet.

She continued, raising her voice slightly. "Well... perhaps now we have a chance, depending on how receptive Equestria is to our cause. That'll be what makes or breaks us- fifty-five ponies isn't going to get us to far outside of a few raids. So... while we are sitting here, why don't we discuss ideas for recruitment? Because I know for a fact that the average pony wishes to flee danger rather than fight it- somehow, we'd have to convince them otherwise..."

Anyone paying attention at this point would have noticed Lilith's cloak turning a regal blue, and her voice deepening subtly...

And is anyone going to complain about his little slip-in? Nooooooo. But when I do it, it's always, "Oh, no, she's on the loose again." Hmph.

El-shardin tends to not rip off pony heads at the slightest provocation.

Just relax, you two. He can talk, and I can mull things over a bit more. Besides, I have a plan for you, Rei. You just have to be patient.

As I always must be. Ugh...

Leaning coolly next to the window, Aria scoffed silently at the notion being suggested.

Does history not repeat itself for these ponies? Did not the might of Equestria fall before Shadow? 'Twould seem folly to announce our presence to the world that has not only cast us from it, but continues to seek our extinction. Bah, no matter; let them have their hope. But when the time comes, I hope they realize we can't tarry playing knights and brigands.

Eyeing the now demolished sled in the yard, Aria picked up another train of thought. That Harcourt could have been capable of such a feat seemed absurd...an impossibility, even. Some event must have transpired that would instill in him some supernatural strength. Cogs in motion, her mind whirred with recollection as she attempted to piece together the events since their arrival in Baltimare. Particularly, that which involved their magic.

Stellina. She claimed Rarity had imparted her magic onto us. Even if it was just a feeling, it may well have been an accurate one. But what does that magic entail? Is it simply her quintessence of generosity, or the magic she wielded as an element bearer? If the former is true, it might be that our magic is heightened in our generous acts, such as Harcourt with the sleigh, or perhaps even Trivy saving the lives of the refugees at the cost of her own. If the latter is true, then the hypothesis still holds, as Harcourt is now the Generous One, and Trivy...well, one would have to assume she was destined for an element. The Magic One, undoubtedly. Both acts would be tied to elemental magic instead. So...which is it?

A pause in her thoughts allowed her to catch a passing breeze rolling in through the window, to which she gladly and briefly lost herself before ruminating further.

Failing that, rather than acts, perhaps our most notable attributes have been enhanced. That would account for Stellina's newfound speed, as it does not quite fall into a generous act...and the second theory would assume she too is destined for some element. Would not that be something? To be the friend of an element bearer? Not that I need another blow to my waning self-esteem. Ah, back on track with you, brain. Stellina's speed, yes. Harcourt's strength, and Trivy's magic? There, then, is yet a third fitting theory at work.

Theory one could be tested further, as everyone committing acts of generosity would yield better results. Theory two, less so...only one element bearer is known at the moment, and who is to say the rest of us are likewise destined to bear our own...or what they would be? That theory requires either information or speculation, though not out of the realm of possibility. When you eliminate the impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. The third theory? Well, Psych, Lilith, and I seem yet to exhibit enhancements, so that is perhaps not quite as solid as the first two. Besides, flight isn't her best attribute...it's her radiance.

With a sigh, Aria turned toward the future Element, wondering how she managed to seem eternally optimistic. In the midst of a city being razed to the ground, or when two friends mourned the loss of someone dear, or when a stubborn musician refused to see herself as anything greater than a part of a sum, she always and sincerely found the silver lining, and did it in the most delightfully insightful way possible.

Theory two it is, Laughing One.

Stardust turned and looked back at Aria, she was in a different place staring out that window. She hoped that place was something of peace to her, hoping that it would help her to see how important she truly was. Stardust could see it in her, she just wished she could see it in herself. One day... she thought.

She turned back to the door and she could hear laughter. Her ears perked up and she fluttered her way out the door. She could see that the conversation had drawn to an end and turned to the griffon.

"Hello, I was told that somepony needed to speak with me. To discuss goings on of the journey that we are on. Also that we have been summoned to appear in front of a great empress? I am interested as to why this would happen. I get it... okay, magic.. blah blah blah... but we are here for a reason and that reason is that we move as quickly as we can without delay. And... I am sorry, but a detour to talk with somepony that I have never heard of for something that is still up in the air for us all is a bit strange. I will have you know, the only ponies that I will allow to go with you... is Lilith and myself."

She stood a bit straighter and pushed her shoulders back and puffed out her chest, ruffling her feathers a bit making her look a bit bigger than her small frame gave her credit.

"I stand firm on this, the rest of the ponies here are refugees and Harcourt is here to watch over them. His tremendous strength and gentle heart is what is keeping the rest of these ponies fed and safe. I am fully capable to relay the message to him after the meeting. There will be no need for further communication between you and the rest of the ponies. Lilith is also fully capable to relay messages between the two groups as it seems she is surly part of your group as she is a part of this one."

Stardust was starting to feel a bit uncomfortable, she was not used to trying to stand firm and in control. She feared for the worst but tried to keep a straight face and an optimistic outlook on the situation. She knew that if it were just her and Lilith going then it would give the group a greater chance of escape so she could delay the group if things went bad. She was concerned about Lilith seeming to be more happy to go with this group then to continue on with their journey to possibly save Equestria. Things were going too fast for her to keep things straight in her mind. Aria was usually the one to keep things straight. Stardust always had her head in the sky, Aria kept her hooves to the ground and made sure that things were the way they were supposed to be.

Stardust was scared, she was so scared that the griffon would be mad, she was scared that he would take offence, that he would call to his friends and they would take the house by force. She was terrified what might happen to the ponies, but she had to try and keep them safe. She had to keep them alive, to keep the hope alive, the hope that there would be a better tomorrow. And she knew that if she went with this griffon to speak to this empress then maybe she would do just that, keep that hope alive.

You are my shining star little one, don't you ever forget that, and I will always be there to watch over you, just keep your hope alive.

She heard her fathers voice echo through her thoughts.

Harcourt lifted an eyebrow in response.

Oh-HO... well, then - it seems as if Star might just have the chops needed for this endeavor after all.  Assuming a mantle of leadership so quickly, so pointedly, so convincingly... but there's more confidence there than Trivy had; more inner focus.  I believe she means to assume the role of leader - and I'll be more than happy to oblige, you clever rising Star.

"Absolutely, ma'am - as you command, I shall remain here to guard the others while you and Lilith meet with this Grand Ranger fellow.  I will also inform the others of your decision... are you quite certain this is your will?  I mean-"

Harcourt suddenly took on a chastised expression, and lowered his head.  He took a deep breath, released it softly and looked back at Star, all business on his muzzle.

"My apologies, ma'am - sorry to question your orders; of course I'll be here, and if you don't come back, well... we'll find you, don't worry, ma'am."

He moved in close to her and made as if to embrace her in a parting hug... then began fastening a small belt of travel saddlebags to her midsection.  Star (and maybe some of their group) were the only ones who saw Harcourt's lips moving at the closest corner to the pegasus; it was Star alone who heard Harcourt's soft whisper:

"Listen closely - if things go badly, speak these words to the Grand Ranger and his Council: Low and slow; go with the flow.  ONLY for emergencies, dear."

He then stopped, his face looking puzzled... but slipping a wink at Star as he leaned in close for a moment, as if she were leaving him 'extra orders', then he pulled back, smiled and saluted Star smartly.

"Absolutely, ma'am - you can count on me."

With this, he turned to Lilith.  He was simply going to wish her well and be off, and yet... and yet... he extended a hoof, placing it on her shoulder for a scant moment.

"I trust all is in order?  Please... take care of her, Lilith; she means the world to us.  And take care of yourself as well, my friend - we need you, too."

He knew she'd catch the emphasis; she was a Luna-Damned Ranger, wasn't she?  With that, he turned to face the griffon.

"It was fine meeting you, Stormwing; give the other two I met earlier my regards, won't you?  And I promise - should I go to gather firewood again, I'll only take a quarter of the forest next time."

His eyes, quick as snakes, darted over to look at Aria; he was making certain the quiet one over there was taking note of his tactics - though he surmised she'd picked up on the ploy he was making.

Now let's hope Stormwing doesn't carry out his message to the fullest extent...

Stormwing's beak opened in surprise as he saw Stardust speak up with authority, and Harcourt responding as if she was royalty, then closed it, mulling it over in his head as Harcourt whispered his message to Star. He turned to her and smiled. "You have an excellent point, of course, that's for sure. However, I see that Lilith has not told you about the safety of a Ranger Sanctuary. Is it a taboo in Equestria, hmm?" He smiled at her, who suddenly stiffened and returned the gaze, but not the smile. He shook his head. "Oh, well...  I do have some conditions for what you propose. First, I wish to see your entire group- even from as far out as two hundred yards. I was tasked to get an accurate head count, if nothing else. And, unfortunately, taking it as words isn't going to work... even if it is from Lilith." He looked at her carefully. "... I have my reasons, of course, but as to what it is belongs only to three pairs of ears."

"But why would you...?" Lilith frowned slightly, thinking, before her expression darkened. "Oh... I see." She leaned back into the shadows in the corner and went back to her deliberating. She did not say anything else on the matter.

Assuming he means what I think he means... Sonuva...

What does he mean?

Lilith, honestly, in this regard, it's none of your business, to put it bluntly. I'm sorry... you'll see eventually.

"Second," continued Stormwing, with a slightly concerned glance to Lilith's shadowy figure, "is that the Grand Ranger wishes to see and discuss with everyone in the group who might have had anything to do with the power surges he detected for a personal conversation that he has told me naught about. From what I could see, that would mean you, Lilith, Harcourt, the young stallion taking Ms. Dash for a walk I spotted on the way here... and I was told there was one other?" He shrugged before continuing. "It matters not how or why, but perhaps you should be made aware I am authorized to use force on a refusal to come before him. Of course, there's nothing wrong with splitting into groups like you proposed, as long as, in the end, he has spoken to each of you. In truth, he just wishes for you to hear him out, whether or not you accept his request." Stormwing looked decidedly uncomfortable at this point, but shook it off quickly and looked at her. "Do you accept these terms, milady, or are we back to negotiations?"
