What is the definition of "old school"? How is Playstation old school? I think of Magnavox Odyssey and Atari 2600. If Playstation can be old school then any system that is not current generation is old school. My favorite old school system is Xbox 360.

Yes, when someone says old school and I find out that they mean PlayStation (one) or N64 ... I grow a grey hair instantly on the spot. My first console was a Atari VCS and then Colecovision.

My first old school experience that I can remember was the NES. Ah, good ole memories playing Mario, Duck Hunt, Snoopy Olympics, Captain Skyhawk, Solar Jetman, etc., <3

As far as I am DAMN WELL CONCERNED, Solar Jetman is the hardest game EVER!

Depends on whether you base it off your personal age, or the age of gaming itself.

If it's the later than the 1980's is the stereotypical decade to be considered 'old school'.

I find only gamers get possessive of time periods to do with their hobby whereas film enthusiasts, literary buffs, etc

might be passionate they don't get as weird about it. Example:

'You don't know what old school is, back in my day we used really floppy discs not the shit you grew up with!'

It's a terrible stereotype don't fall prey to it, look at it objectively not subjectively, unless you want to end up being 'that guy'. As a reference point the first 'videogame' was 'tennis for two' developed in 1958 by Willy Higginbotham at the brookhaven National Laboratory.

Old school ... sigh

To be fair, if you had to choose between a PS1 and a NES and that was the only console you could ever play, you would choose the PS1.

I think a lot of nostalgia for old games has more to do with being nostalgic for your childhood than the games actually being good.

First video game I ever played was Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt on the Nintendo Entertainment System.  My video game skillset is decidedly old school, even today lol.  I have great affection for the NES era.  Mega Man II, III, IV, Castlevania and Simon's Quest, Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Bros., SMB2 (JPN - Famicom rather than NES), Super Mario Bros. 3, Blaster Master, Dragon Quest, Zelda II, Kid Icarus, Gyruss, DuckTales and Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers, etcetera.  No school like the old school.
