There is nothing in that scenario that says it couldn't happen naturally, just that it wasn't natural in this instant. The fact that the cutie mark changed regardless of the circumstance says that it isn't unprecedented 

 

The only instances of cutie marks changing has been to outside magical influence beyond a ponies control altering a cutie mark.

As such, there's no precedent ever shown of a NATURAL changing cutie mark.

I was answering the question "can they change", and I gave definitive proof that they do indeed have the capacity to change. I would not strike out the possibility that cutie marks couldn't do the same thing naturally until its explicitly stated in the show or shown in the show that its not possible.

Just felt that was such a revelation 

I definitely agree with this. However I wouldn't say it's what they know they want to be necessarily, but what they want to be in their hearts.
