gamecubeguy214 2,514 October 17, 2015 Share October 17, 2015 So there are many, many brony works out there. Fanfics, animations, art, just so many masterpieces out there that deserves to be in a famous art museum. However, why do they have to be so sad? The main character always has something hard or stressful in their life and it adds to the "feels". It's just, why are they trying to make us cry or feel sad for the character? We don't want to have these feelings for a character, we want to watch or read something and feel joy, but the main character always has to die in the end or something. It's just.. why? The feels add a positive effect, but should sadness be the whole purpose of the story? I don't think so. 1 Pennutoh has a gun

Everything nice all the time is boring. Sometimes, I love to read a grimdark story.... even with pastel ponies involved. Though I do like more uplifting stories such as: Xenophilia, Her Whole Darn Heart and other romantic stories in general. gamecubeguy214 2,514 October 17, 2015 Author Share October 17, 2015 Everything nice all the time is boring. True, there can be sad works, it's just that the ending is sad and the main character dies in the end. I feel that bronies need to put more happy endings into their works. I feel like there can be a few sad endings but I think people's main focus should be happy endings. Pennutoh has a gun

There are stories of hardship with lots of suffering and death. Stories in which ponies even saved humanity from extinction and the like. Stories where even ponies face against their evil counterparts to put a stop to their insanity and the suffering they inflict on; humans, ponies and non ponies alike. VengefulStrudel 1,495 October 17, 2015 Share October 17, 2015 If everything is peachy keen, it can get boring, yes. Though I think that if everything is hopeless and gloomy, then it can also get just as boring. In the few grimdark fics I've read, I've gotten darkness-induced apathy, not really caring what horrible fate the characters were bestowed upon, primarily because it's dark for the sake of being dark. My favorite kind of fics are the ones that balance good/happy moments with bad/sad/dark ones, it makes the story feel more believable and fun to read. Constant goodness or darkness can get repetitive very quickly. Anywho, on the question...I guess because the show is so happy and chirpy most of the time, fanfics try to balance that out? J. Brony 313 October 17, 2015 Share October 17, 2015 I think it's because the writers/artists project their own emotions and experiences into their works. A lot of people like to write and/or draw to help them relax or take their mind off of real-world issues. Projecting one's anxiety into a medium where you have total control and can determine the outcome of a worrisome situation is very cathartic to some. DJW 142 October 17, 2015 Share October 17, 2015 The show has a very positive outlook, which is in contrast to much of current media. It is often assumed that to be 'real' you have to be gritty, dark and uncomforatble. Just look at the direction many comics took in the late 90's (looking at you Batman). That said, the world is not as happy and carefree as the show often presents, a 'real' equestria would probably not be as whimsical as the one we watch each week. The show has gone to great lengths to portray well developed, fleshed out characters, so it might be reasonable to think that much of what goes on there is not as wonderful as portrayed. While it is not certifiably confirmed that AJ's parents are dead, it is heavily hinted at. Was that a happy experience? Did they go through a short period of mourning that was enlivened by a lesson about letting go, or was it a years-long journey of acceptance? I think it's because the writers/artists project their own emotions and experiences into their works. A lot of people like to write and/or draw to help them relax or take their mind off of real-world issues. Projecting one's anxiety into a medium where you have total control and can determine the outcome of a worrisome situation is very cathartic to some. Exactly. You have an existing world to play with, so you can use the assets as a vehicle for emotional release.

Shanks 10,817 October 18, 2015 Share October 18, 2015 Those are the stories that often get the attention, there are plenty of more light hearted fanworks out there but they don't get as much attention. A lot of writers know it is clickbait while many others express their own emotions through their writing and some of those emotions can be a bit more on the sad side of things. As a fanfic writer myself most of my ideas are comedies actually, though some of them are a tad on the cynical side or have jokes that are way too "mature" to be included in the show like this toilet humor fic I wrote for example called Sweet Guano Acres. This is despite the fact that many of my own thoughts are rather dark and depressing, so I guess in my case I wish to express different emotions. I think sad fics are easy to write yet difficult to write well and not just because there are so many of them, but because the trick is to make it sound convincing without sounding too hackneyed or cliched. The best sad fic I ever read is Why Are You Crying which deals with the CMC's reactions to the tragic death of Diamond Tiara in a carriage accident. As someone who has gone through the grieving process myself a few times the fic is very realistic and relatable in terms of how they all deal with the complex emotions they have. http://www.fimfiction.net/story/92801/why-am-i-crying Rarity Get's Cockroaches
-Nobody- 534 October 18, 2015 Share October 18, 2015 (edited) I don't think they're all sad, heck I don't even think most of them are really sad. It's just the sad ones are what gets the most views/reads/clicks, and get more recognition because of the feels. "The thing they like to see more than a hero, is to see a hero fail."
