This just occurred to me - in the episode where the sun and the moon are both in the sky - the moon clearly was casting night, blocking the sun from that side, when in our world, the brightness of the sun would simply have covered up the darkness around the moon.

WHAT DOES THIS MEEEEAN.

And I know the answer is probably just "it's a children's show, it doesn't have to make sense" - but I like to have interesting discussions :P

There's a theory which is converse to the accepted theory of proton light transmission, called "Darksuckers". Darksucker Theory isn't as much of a scientific hypothesis as much as it is a useful thought-experiment to get your mind around particle behavior.

In Darksucker theory, there is no such thing as a light source. Everything is ubiquitously dark by default, and "light sources" vacuum away darkness which is normally emitted by everything. When this sucking action is imbalanced, our eyes can perceive information which would normally be inhibited by the darkness being emitted by our eyes, bodies, and the object to be seen. From a physics standpoint, the concept is somewhat ridiculous but it's an exercise on how to think about unconventional concepts "backwards".

Perhaps the moon is a darksucker in MLP, except it's a lightsucker.

Whoa! Thats alot of big words. I never heard of that theory though, sounds very interesting...

so the sun would be a darksucker, and the moon a lightsucker.. interesting..

I.. probably shouldn't have worded it that way.. in before anyone makes an immature comment about that haha..

as a spiritual leader I sort of teach something sort of similar.. and that is 2 things exist - source, the source of all consciousness and existence, and void, the source of nothing.

Nothing is what exists by default, and by expressing will and thought consistently, one converts thought into energy, and energy into matter. Lose focus of that constant will and thought, and void starts to unravel that matter back into energy and back into nothingness. The potential for creation is always there, but it takes focus to keep it there.

So in this case the sun could be seen as source, the source of all life, generating light, and the moon the natural force of void, that which exists when lights power to spread past a certain point grows weaker and it starts to be undone by void.

I believe that the last part might have been the intent with Luna and Celestia - to show that both are needed, and that "light" and "dark," while perceived as opposites, aren't enemies, but family that works together to create the balance. A "without Void, there'd be no place for matter, and without matter, how could something as void be perceived" kinda' thing... This would have been back in the Faust days, but heck, I've got no clue about stuff, so make with it what you want. ^^'

(edited)

now for the next entertaining question - how is the moon lit :P

also the series seems to have maintained that the moon is indeed CLOSER to the mlp world, as when luna raises it in the past it goes in front of the sun.. which sorta alludes the moon has the power to take away the light, but the light does not have the power to take away the dark..

food for though.

There's another sun follows the moon from behind where ever it moves so you never see it other than behind the moon
