I think that we're reading into this waaaaaay to much quite honestly. The 7 deadly sins are just different ways of being evil and any villain is bound to represent at least one. I don't see a sin that discord represents, and as for somber he seems to have afflicted the people with depression or sadness more like

That's a good point about the villains of the show so fare. If you ask me a dragon would be a great villain for greed. It would have to be different from the ones we have seen so fare. [/background]

Why are some people on the first page listing random characters? The topic is about villains, yet I'm seeing Mane Six and other characters listed xP

Nightmare Moon as the sin of envy is spot on, of course.

Discord as pride? I can sort of see that. He's carefree, but as shown with Fluttershy counter-trolling him, he hates it when his plans don't follow through, which sort of demonstrates his ego he's drawn for himself, which in turn points at pride. However, Trixie beats out Discord at this, by all accounts.

I'm a bit unsure about Chrysalis as lust. Chrysalis is more pure and simple hungry for power than anything, which would point to something like greed more than lust. But maybe I'm seeing 'lust' as a sexual definition alone, and not a 'lust' for power or a 'lust' for for anything in general. By that definition it works.

I know nothing about this Somber guy, so I have no comment about him yet. An interesting theory though, and like past comments have said, there's been a minor villain or creature that has represented most if not all of these, thus far. It'll be interesting to see if more major villains in the future mirror new sins.

They're making the Elements of Chaos, of course.

That would actually make a pretty good two parter in a future season. For some reason I can picture that happening. (And yes I realize you posted that in April :P )

WHY? WHY? WHY?

WHY MUST YOU POST SEASON 3 SPOILERS???

Well....cuz....I'm guessing.....Sloth.....is the villain in Season 3....

BUT WHY?

Man at least put a spoiler button above it. Sheesh...

Yeah, lust can be used as a wanting for power and tremendous riches. Although, I think what separates that from Gluttony is that Lust is something that you think you need and that you have to have and nothing can stand in your way while Gluttony is just you foolishly want the riches or goods for all the wrong reasons without any real harm intentions.

Yeah it definitely sounds like you're into FMA haha, but who can blame you it is a really cool Anime.

You pretty much nailed it with lining previous villains up to their sins, however King Sombre would probably be more suited as wrath. Going by looks of course, because he does look pretty physically strong.

I don't think it's intentional, I think the writers wanted to have each villain to have a distinct personality like the main cast.

Agreed.

Also, the whole Seven Deadly Sins thing is a little too serious and anachronistic for My Little Pony. I doubt if it ever occurred to the writers, and if it did they wouldn't use it. MLP is a moralistic show, but it's not religious.

But the seven deadly sins could be viewed as a set of moralistic downfalls. I mean that's how I see it. I don't view it as religious, but a set of things that lead to downfall

I actually don't even like FMA... got the idea in general of the Seven Deadly sins... well, I suppose that isn't true... I guess I got the thought and connection from Digimon's Seven Demon Lords whom also represents sins

okay ponies, give me all your treasure.

Interesting idea but i think its a over speculation....if King Sombra does end up representing a deadly sin i will have to believe it..but at the moment i just think its a coincidence

You can take this topic with a grain of salt. We're not saying we expect you to believe that the creators of these characters were specifically thinking of the deadly sins when they created them. This is just a 'if you were to match the villains to the deadly sins, which villains would be the most like which sin?'

To be a realist here, I have to agree with TailsAlone that the writers probably won't implement such a thing into a TV show like this, as interesting as it is. Villains are created through vices being their cardinal traits, their behaviour directly stemming off from committing actions according to their sins, and thus it wouldn't be insane to think such a thing would apply here. That said, So far, the three villains have captured some of the vices pretty well. Let's take a look.

Nightmare Moon: Envy. Princess Luna transformed into Nightmare Moon because she was envious of her sister's ability and slightly higher status among ponykind. Somehow, I get the feeling that Luna not only wanted her night to be appreciated much more than just looked upon, but also sort of yearning to have the effect that Celestia's day puts upon her subjects. Eventually, of course, she went over the edge and transformed into something pretty wicked, even though it was emotionally charged and wasn't pure evil, she was subjected to it quite easily.

Chrysalis: Lust. Let's face it, she not only wants to feed her minions by sapping the love away from Equestria's denizens, but she also wants Equestria all for herself. The fact that she went out of her way to sing an opera about it, about how she's a fake and doesn't care for Shining Armor at all speaks a lot about her character. There is an intense look in her eyes every time you see them - nothing but an intense desire to rule over all of Equestria. And do not be mistake - lust goes beyond just excessive sexual wants. It can apply for power as well as fame or wealth.

Discord: Pride. This guy is a cruel prankster and joker, and he knows it. He reminds you of the hooligan down your street who pulls mean pranks on you just to make himself feel better, and that's really all that he is. That doesn't stop there, however. As a viewer, you were subjected to his various taunts that were directed to not only Twilight and her friends, but also Princess Celestia and her kingdom. He was so confident in his "jokes", however, that he became very arrogant throughout the season two premiere which led to his eventual defeat. He's also given us the impression that he cares for no one other than himself and his work... which wreaked havoc in Ponyville.

Sombra looks like he'd be a great candidate for the sin of wrath, judging by his tyrannical personality and his general design.

Celestia's simile of his heart being "as black as night" seems to speak great volumes in itself - I definitely got the same impression as you did. We have not seen a ruthless and homicidal villain yet, and his antics will surely have a unique impact on the Mane 6.

Of course, wrath stems from rage - if Sombra is revealed to be angry most of the time, we could be headed somewhere with all this.

Oh, I almost forgot - if you remember, I made a thread back in May (I think) which spoke about how the major villains represent the opposite of each Element of Harmony. For example, Discord was Pinkie Pie's antihesis (to put it into perspective) because his kind of sparking laughter was vile and pretty mean. It wasn't fun at all. Likewise, Chrysalis rose to power through lies and deception not unlike Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars - the complete opposite of Applejack. And Nightmare Moon was driven by a selfish desire to reign supreme over all beings and to command them, not really caring for them at all - the opposite to Twilight Sparkle. If we follow that line of thinking, and given Sombra's character, he could turn out to be the opposite of Fluttershy's Element of Kindness as, once again, his heart is as black as the night.

More great analyzations. That makes a lot of sense, and the chronological order makes sense too. Nightmare Moon representing an opposite end of the spectrum to Twilight was the very first premiere villain of the show, which makes sense since since Twilight was the main focus. Villains are now starting to focus on the other characters.

If that theme were to continue, we'd be looking at a potentially selfish, possibly greedy character to rule out as Rarity's opposite, and a lying, betraying villain that starts off as seemingly good, but then betrays the main cast, acting as Dash's opposite.

Just something I kind of noticed... just what if they kind of decided to do something like make a villain for each of the sins... they already got two of the toughest ones to make (Envy and Lust[specially for a kid's cartoon])

So if they did this, what do you think the future villains: Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Sloth; would be like?

Little note: I almost wouldn't think of adding Discord to this, only because he is the sole representation of chaos

If your theory is correct, judging from all of the spoilers currently given, King Sombre is actually more of Greed. Which means we would still have Sloth, Gluttony, and Wrath to deal with... Wrath would be a good episode...

Nice, a villain that's a mix of both antitheses!

That'd be a pretty flexible - I'm sure the writers have more ideas for villains than just the Mane 6's polar opposites, but this is a great reference point. Kind of like Batman and Joker - that rivalry is so fierce and engaging (as a result, world famous) because Joker is the perfect enemy for Batman, not because of his crazy nature, but because his nature greatly contrasts with Batman's lawful and heroic interpretation of the world. Joker kills mercilessly and sadistically, and Batman is willing to reform villains himself so that he can clean up Gotham and perhaps even the world.

Holy hell, did I just get all three of them right without even looking at the OP? B)

A pretty fantastic thought by the guy who came up with this.

I like this idea.

It would be very interesting to see what they can come up with for the seven deadly sins. Weather they are already doing it, or they make a group of villains represent it, I'm all for it.

I voted 'I like this" what can I say? I'm a being of simple thought.

But this is very true and interesting, although I'm sure you could relate any villain in any series to the seven deadly sins in some way or another.

Greed - Flim Flam Bros, Spike, Diamond Dogs

Wrath - Dragons, Flutterrage

Pride - The Great and Powerful Trrrrrrrrixie!

Gluttony - Parasprite, MMMM Cake

Sloth - Rainbow Dash at times, not much in the show overall

Oh and...

My Little Alchemist

That is all.

The dragon from Dragonshy would also be an example of sloth. Think about, he wouldn't move over to the next mountain or cavern to sleep in even though the smoke he was snoring out would block out the sky. Plus, Discord caused wrath among the Mane 6.

Just to mention, when I added Sombra to the list,I did it when people thought we heard "Somber" instead. That and the only thing we had on his back ground was that the crystal ponies seemed tired.. so I thought, he made them fall asleep... so that's why I chose sloth

Good to note. At this point though, for reasons both myself and Alfonzo have pointed out, Wrath works the best for him, with Greed being a slightly less likely but albeit possible alternative.
