Odd Ball 231 June 20, 2016 Share June 20, 2016 The lack of variety in sets, characters and poses. The fact that they play it a little more safe still and try too hard with slapstick humor. The look drives me crazy and for the record, I'm not crazy about Powerpuff or Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends look. That's because the show was created by Lauren Faust, who also worked on those shows. I think the slapstick can be pretty clever at times.

King Sejong 859 June 20, 2016 Share June 20, 2016 There are two downsides, one is the lack of universe building, we go from Ponyville to Canterlot, and back again, I wish we got to see more of Equestria, like Fillidelphia or Las Pegasus, some place outside of the usual setting. Digimon for example, has very elaborate world building, as the digi destined and the tamers, cross into the digiworld, as they embark on a journey to learn about Digimon, and had quite an adventure, I wish Friendship is Magic had done more of this, also they could have explored places all ready seen, like Cloudsdale or the Crystal Empire, which I don't even know the name of its capital city, it's a oversight that annoys me. I am also curious to know if there is other hoofed animals like cervines, I know the comics have deer and elk in Equestria, which I really wanted to see in the show, to see where they live, and how they interact with the ponies. Two, is the lack of a prominent male protagonist, again Digimon did this well, in fact Japanese anime typically has a group of diverse characters, male and female, younger and older, MLP had the opportunity to empower it's audience, no matter who they are, although we have Spike, he's a dragon and the youngest on the main cast, we could have had some good stallions, it's unfortunate than stallions like Braeburn, Shinning Armour, Cheese Sandwich and Double Diamond, had such brief moments on the show, it seems unfair that these stellar characters, didn't have more time to shine, this move could have promoted balance between the genders, that we can like the same interests, and have similar ambitions that overlap.

Rikifive 24,126 June 21, 2016 Share June 21, 2016 (edited) Also, one of the things that I kinda don't like are reused pony styles ~ characters being recolored versions of the others. (Same mane/tail, but different colors) - It's a lazy and bad way to make new characters. Edited June 21, 2016 by Rikifive 2 Playing Genshin Impact? Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,316 June 21, 2016 Share June 21, 2016 There are only two things I can think of: 1. When they make characters into huge cliches or stereotypes. I am not talking about any character in particular though-Oh hi Zephyr Breeze! & 2. How they used time travel as a major plot point. I haaaaaaaaaate that. The first time it was used, it was used very shortly and used for comedic and moral effect. In the season 5 finale, it was just annoying. I hope they don't dabble with that anymore as it is far more trouble than it is worth. There are other more minor things that can bug me at times but those are the only major issues I have.
Discordian 6,015 June 21, 2016 Share June 21, 2016 The fact that it takes forever for it to come out on DVD is one huge thing for me. I stopped watching them online after season 4 so I haven't actually seen season 5 or 6 yet. You'd think season 5 would be available for DVD before season 6 came out but nope. I also hate the fact that a lot of the themes and structure of each episode are still present long after they become obsolete. The "writing to Celestia" thing or the opening not being relevant to the show much anymore. Also the fact that a lot of characters, no matter how much they evolve, still revert to some form of their original selves at the beginning of the next episode. I realize it's for marketing but it's holding back the show.
Guest June 21, 2016 Share June 21, 2016 The fact that everything is a horse pun is obnoxious and feels forced. I agree. While I don't think every single one of them is obnoxious, that one part where Applejack said gesundhoof instead of gesundheit just made me roll my eyes. What else would there be to dislike? In my case there isn't much, but something about the standard pony toys. It's a bummer that there isn't almost any diversity in them besides their colors and that some of them have the other hoof lifted. I mean it would be great if there were some different poses. I also can't find anything good about Fluttershy's eye style changing from this to this.

I wish they'd paint the eyes like they used to. Hasbro is so cheap and scroogey on their toys these days. Cleverclover 1,526 June 21, 2016 Share June 21, 2016 The fact that only Twilight's development ever seems to go anywhere. The rest of the mane five seem to move at a snail's pace in comparison. Twilight became an alicorn princess in half the time Rainbow Dash was able to become a Wonderbolt. I also hate how Applejack, Pinkie, and Fluttershy never received any goals to work toward. They definitely feel like they're in stagnation at this point.

They don't have to be huge goals but giving them a reason to do what they're doing would be more interesting. 2 ✿ "The important thing is not how long you live... Discordian 6,015 June 21, 2016 Share June 21, 2016 @@Cleverclover, To be fair, their lifestyles tend to be pretty samey. Farm work? Animal care? Those types of things don't change much. Pinkie not having goals matches her personality imo. She gets all of her kicks out of what she's doing at that particular moment and doesn't have need for what happens in the far future.
CastletonSnob 3,074 June 21, 2016 Share June 21, 2016 (edited) The lack of worldbuilding. I can't believe how hard the show dropped the ball on the map concept and the "Explore Equestria" theme. On a related note, the portrayal of non-ponies. Either they're dumb, mindless brutes (the yaks), or they're greedy (griffons). More recently, the imbalance between character episodes. There's too much Rarity for my liking. Finally, the villain reformations. They're overdone. The worst offender was Starlight's. I find it insulting that the writers expected us to believe that she brainwashed an entire town and caused Equestria to become a dystopia because she lost one friend. These are the issues that I feel are preventing MLP from going down as one of the great cartoons. Edited June 21, 2016 by VG_Addict
ScopeEva 38 June 21, 2016 Share June 21, 2016 What do I not like? A hard choice but I there is one topic that consistently rubs me the wrong way: Destiny. I am an existentialist. The way I see it, the universe and our existence is devoid of meaning except for that which we create ourselves and I revel in the unparalleled freedom that grants us in our lives. However in Equestria, it would seem ponies have a destiny (or at least that's what the ponies believe) and this disturbs me. Take for example Sunset Shimmer; it's part of her generally accepted back story she wanted to be an alicorn and a princess. Lets say she stepped back, reassessed her life and took a better path. She worked as hard as she could and as morally as she could yet she would never have achieved her goals because it was not her destiny. I find the idea rather repulsive. However I guess it is still a matter of perspective so maybe anything goes. It's certainly not the perspective I use when I write. 2 Fimfiction | Fanfiction | Deviant Art | UKofE Baltoist says hi

Hell, for all we know, Applejack's family is still in the position where just one bad season could potentially mean the death for their business. Surely, they have earned more financial security by now? On the other hand, do they even want more than they have? AJ seems pretty content with how life on the farm goes. A few bad situations aside the thing seemingly runs near flawlessly year round. Stability vs aspirations, I suppose. Personally I'd rather stick with what I have as long as it stays the same than try a venture that may or may not work out.

The whole concept of destiny is flat out stupid, and insulting. The universe doesn't owe anyone any kind of life, we make our own path. Twilight is the worst example of this destiny crap, she's basically won life. Her achievements and status would be nothing without her friends, because you know, friendship is magic, yet she's given even more than what she already has, way more than what she needs, while her friends get zilch. I mean seriously, Twilight gets a flipping castle, while AJ is still working hard on the farm. The show is constantly reminding us how amazingly special Twilight is, and how her destiny will only keep making it greater. I can't help but feel bad for the pony that ends up with a toilet cutie mark.

Yeah, pretty much why I don't spin it that way in my head with mention of destiny being more of a fancy term for their worked for future. (Edit: and cutie marks being something a little more malleable that could maybe even change given a large enough shift in a pony's life.) I wouldn't say Twilight doesn't deserve what she has but she sure as heck shouldn't be the only one of the group to get it and in a way we see a shadow of that with them getting their own thrones in the castle but I won't be completely satisfied until they all get their alicorn ascensions. They deserve it... though I can also see the advantages of letting them have more time to live their lives normally first. I want a Pink Princess of parties damn it and I don't care about the consequences of Pinkie Pie with demigod like powers! I'm also not a fan of when the show has the mane six as the only protectors of Equestira and showing that without them it will become a lifeless wasteland. While at the same time having the minor and background ponies be useless, unless it's a dream. Which is why I dislike Magical Mystery Cure and The Cutie Remark. TheFunk 2,172 June 22, 2016 Share June 22, 2016 The only gripe I can think of is how the ponies control all of the weather and changing seasons.
