You're looking at a broader picture than what we're discussing, though. You're explaining why Discord will not die or go away forever in general, but most of these opinions are about why specifically is being turned to stone the way the show decided to go?

I kind of agree with you, but also it might just be the intentions of the Mane 6 are implemented into their "elements of harmony" attack. I don't think they wanted to really banish or destroy NMM, but they did have the intention to banish Discord back.

Because if Nightmare Moon had been turned to stone then we wouldn't have Luna. Besides, it was more epic to see Discord turned into stone, and Discord wasn't a good pony gone bad he was just bad to begin with.

If that was true then Celestia and Luna would have had to make the conscious decision to seal him in stone back in the dark ages, something that to me doesn't make sense when they could have done something less risky like actually destroying him. That's why, to me, my idea makes more sense.

Remember, these are the elements of HARMONY, turning someone to stone rather than KILLING him wouldn't be a very harmonious thing to do. Besides, Celestia and Luna aren't really the type to kill.

Ahhh. Banishing to Tartarus means they will have lots of torture... I don't think Celestia and Luna want to send someone for eternal torture. O_O

Maybe the elements of Harmony know what kind of spell to use on him and that could be why he was turned to stone. Or maybe the user of magic is able to know which would work to seal a creator like him away.

Eh, I just don't see the ponies' intentions playing a huge role in it. A nice idea, but it feels like the elements do what they do, they attack the negativity, whatever the evil is, and purify it with their own positive influence. Since nightmare Moon was just Luna in emo form, it killed off her outer shell and redeemed her to how she was. With Discord, since he's both non-redeemable as well as harmony's opposite, he's petrified.

That's a nice theory you got there Discord, though you're all over-thinking it. I doubt the animators were even thinking when they decided they would turn him into stone, it's just a cartoon for 8 year olds..

To be frank, half of 'Show Discussion' would not exist without 'over-thinking' Analyzing the show is natural, seeing as how the animators aren't going to do it themselves, like you've mentioned.

Actually, the introduction of the Tree of Harmony makes my theory regarding Discord's petrification all the more valid. The Elements are effectively fruits from the Tree of Harmony, which is, as of now, the single purest representational entity of harmony in the entire MLP universe. That title was on Celestia before now, to many, because a popular head canon was that she had something to do with the creation of the Elements, in order to defeat Discord with her sister, all those years ago. But that's been shown to not be the case at all. Celestia and Luna simply borrowed the elements from an even more ancient entity of harmony, that entity being the tree.

 

With the Tree on the far left of the Harmonic end of the spectrum, and Discord being at the far right of the Chaos end, it makes perfect sense that the 'fruits' of the tree are able to petrify him. They contain the powerful harmonic magic that cancels his powers of chaos out completely, when used by beings that are one with that harmonic magic (through friendship, love, etc).

 

 

All that's left now is, is the Tree the ultimate source of this mysterious, but always present power known as 'harmony', or is there something even deeper? What put the tree there in the first place? Does its' power stretch across Equestria, or does it simply govern the Everfree and the surrounding lands. And if so, does that mean there's more than one tree?

 

Sure looking forward to the tree's incorporation into the rest of the season, as well as Discord and if his presence will allow us to learn anything more about the relationship between harmony and chaos, and the entities that have been shown to embody them. Yeah, i think i heard you talk about that theory sometime, might've even discussed it with you somewheres. And i kinda adopted it to an extent myself.

 

And this new episode makes the whole theory make even more sense. The fact that the tree of harmony is like the spirit of harmony maybe, and the elements or its fruits are a part of its essence, and when used on Discord kind of act as a neutralizer thus turning him to stone since they are his opposite.

Elements of Harmony represent pure, undiluted, concentrated harmony, while Discord represents pure, undiluted, concentrated chaos.

I don't know about anypony, but to me it's pretty obvious.

I see EoH not as a powerful weapon but as a some sort of control mechanism, that can be used on specific sort of creatures, like NM or Doscird.

Let's recall the episode "Dragonshy": the dragon there thretened Equestria with the frakin NUCLEAR WINTER! So, in my eyes, he was a clear and presend danger to the country, that had to be neutralized by any means necessery.

And yet, nopony ever even discussed the posibility of using EoH on him. From it I conclude, EoH wouldn't work on him. Which means, the dragon was already in harmony with it's nature and couldn't be harmonized further.

Another question though: why Her Highness couldn't harmonize her sister right away but had to banish her to the moon?

In antique greek mythology, where the word "chaos" came from, chaos was the initial state of everything, of the universe itself. So, before cosmos (order) appeared, there existed pure chaos without any harmony. Means they were not bond together like two "dialectical oppositions".

The first episode of Season 4 begs the question of how harmony and chaos can exist simultaneously, but I think chaos exist for the reason to distrupt the flow of harmony and Discord probably has a distinct knowledge of the tree.

My thought was that the elements used different spells that resulted in different effects, in the case of Nightmare Moon the rainbow did a twist in the air before forming a tornado around her, while in the case of Discord, it was just a straight line.

I completely agree with you. That tree is clearly very ancient. I do wonder if Discord is as old as the tree, or if Discord's personification (dragonification) of Chaos is something which has been handed down to him, in a way.

Celestia and Luna "rose up" to defeat him when he was already well-established, but (especially with the recent flashback proof) it is clear that Celestia and Luna were already alicorns and therefore already had strong magical prowess. They could (and I believe they are) as old as each other.

 

If Celestia didn't create the Elements and apparently didn't have a hoof in creating them either, but merely borrowed them, it is a possibility that Discord is a result of some other, more ancient power, that he in turn "borrowed" or had bestowed upon him in some way. I know that it's a little far-reaching and I don't have anything to base this on other than my own personal head-canon, but I still love thinking of Celestia and Discord as being completely equal opposites and this enables me to continue doing so.

 

Also, somepony else in this thread said that they thought Discord must know a lot about the Tree of Harmony. True, he planted Seeds of Doubt to try and destroy the tree, but I don't understand how he seemed oblivious to the Element's power before being turned to stone the first time.

As far as immediate head canon for me goes, I'd have to say that some kind of god entity (we'll just call her 'Fausticorn'!) created some initial building blocks for the known MLP universe, and then let these core elements interact with one another and ultimately end up creating the known universe that we see now. These core elements would be harmony, chaos, magic and the earth/planet of which Equestria is located on. Discord became the entity of chaos, whilst the tree for harmony, and magic is sort of a presence found in all things on the planet.

 

Going off from that, one has to wonder why a living creature was chosen as chaos's representative, and a tree for harmonies. I'd guess that its' a matter of best fitting representation to that theme. Chaos is unpredictable and unreliable. Thus, a Draconequus (which is a type of chimera; a creature made up of various kinds of animals) with a witty trickster personality is the best fit for chaos, whilst harmony is far simpler to represent. It's pure, so, something natural and peaceful like a plant or tree works best.

If I had to guess, I would say that, Celestia and Luna were probably the first beings to ever pull the Elements from the Tree and use them as weapons. That would explain why they made it seem like a big deal. Since Discord is a being of chaos and thus, the tree probably wouldn't let him interact with it much if at all one on one, so even if he has known about it since the beginning of time, he probably never knew that was possible since he'd never seen it done before. When he said, 'Oooooh, what've you got there?', he was probably being sarcastic (he sure sounded it), in that, he probably recognized that the Elements were from the Tree, and probably knew that the princesses would turn to the tree for aide, since it's probably the only natural thing powerful enough to nullify him, but, wasn't aware of what the princesses could truly do with them. That's why he was sowing his seeds in the first place, as a precautionary measure to have them zap the tree of its' magic, as well as bind the two princesses, in hopes that, should something go wrong for him (which it oh so did), he could reverse whatever it was later down the line.
