They're recruiting actual ponies to stand on a large checkered playing field. They simply stand still until they're ordered to move to a square or capture another "piece". Like people in some of our own countries still do. But how the capturing is done is entirely up to the ponies. There are 16 pieces on each side, and you get to nominate the ponies to fill each one of them. Anyone's up for grabs, including Celestia and Luna themselves. Who do you pick? No questions asked. Starlight would be the queen, because street smarts plus book smarts = a good tactician, but fluttershy the king who commands the queen, because she might misunderstand things like troop moral (starlight) and fluttershy would help keep he rin check, and fluttershy would want to win with minimal casualties which is very efficient. The knights will be pinkie/dash. The bishops would be rarity/twilight(because one is like a tactical advisor the other is like a noble-pony who values their lifestyles), the castles would be Celestia and AJ because AJ is straightforward due to honesty, and Celestia has a castle? Lol. Twi could also be a castle (rook) Celestia could also be the queen, twi could be the king, starlight could be the king too if the battle turns out to have character development. Derpy Dr Lyra bonbon vinyl octi are obv pawns. Then two fan-favorites from the cult that starlight started would also be pawns because it fits lol. Or two background ponies from ponyville such as roselocks or carrotpatch. Oh I know, Aloe and lotus is a tag-team pawn, then so are the cakes. They're declaring what moves each piece is going to make, and they're not gonna play the same team.And the match is played with ponies only.
